Summer dresses

I would like to find an all-purpose summer dress – is anyone able to help?

I've been agonising all week over summer dressing and feel fat and/or hot in every combination. Then this morning I put on a dress and realised that A Dress is the solution.

I'm looking for something in a good fabric with a good cut, so I'm expecting to spend some money. However, it should not be so expensive (£150+, Eg Me + Em) that I am afraid to wear it every day, or made of some insane material like silk. It also probably shouldn't be lined.

The Dress should ideally have sleeves of some kind, but not long sleeves (too hot) or tiny cap sleeves. It should absolutely not be empire-line or have a drop waist. A-Line would be fine. Button-down with a lower neckline would be good.

I would like and/or be obliged to have picnics, fulfil childcare duties, walk the dog and see people in this dress, so it should not be too long (maxi) or too short (above the knee). I plan to wear it mostly with Birkenstocks, plimsolls and (when feeling ritzy) chunky brown suede mid-heel sandals. My calves are a bit chunky but needs must.

I am a size 12 and short, about half a stone overweight. I dislike my upper arms and stomach. Other stylish summer suggestions beyond dresses welcome.

Doesn't exist. Every year folk come on here, searching for the dress you describe but no-one ever finds it.

YahBasic · 31/05/2020 12:35

I feel like cotton or linen shirt dresses would fit the brief really well. I find them flowy but still fitted so you can see your shape.

Next are always my go to for summer dresses - can’t link from the app, but try linen blend kaftan dress.

Really? That is too sad. I think this comes pretty close...

Lots of choice here

Tiered smock dress with puff sleeves?

YahBasic · 31/05/2020 12:44

All very similar to the one you posted and varying prices between about 35-70.

Realised the first one has cut off the company - it’s Monki.

I was looking for this too. Was looking at and other stories. Eventually -last week- bought on a TU spotted denim one for £15 as stop gap and have worn it every time I have been out of the house since - it's lovely.

BlueCowWonders · 31/05/2020 14:18

I have this - linen with pockets. V cool to wear. Am also short so i turned the hem up about 3cm to make it knee length.

I have it in navy

ooonicorn · 31/05/2020 14:26

Have you looked at some of the dancing leopard dresses? They're my "go to" and some can be dressed up or down with shoes or trainers

dudsville · 31/05/2020 14:31

I have a number of cotton button down shirt dresses with short (and long) sleeves, collars or not, all with great pockets and a belt to define my waist since carm be worn loose if I'm feeling bloated.

Have a look at Kemi Telford

Pangur2 · 31/05/2020 14:37

Have a look at Collectif. They have a sale until this evening I think.
They also sell boleros, so if you find a dress you like with no sleeves, you can still cover your arms. Most of the dresses are 50s style but some are 40s, 60s and 70s style too.

Boohoo.com

blueskys72 · 31/05/2020 14:46

I think Seasalt might have some to meet your spec, if you like that sort of style.

The sizes are small so size up.

LordEmsworth · 31/05/2020 14:47

No buttons, but I think this meets all your other specifications... I'm wearing one now and thinking about buying more in other colours. The waistline hides my belly, and it has "proper" short sleeves... I am curvier than the model, and shorter (5 foot 4) and it's about 1.5 inches below my knees...

Boden Amelie dress

I have a disigual demin dress that fits your requirements perfectly! It's this season's so you should get a bargain. Unfortunately I can post a link but I'm sure you'll find it on their website.

Letthemysterybe · 31/05/2020 15:49

My requirements are the same as yours op and I have spent many many hours searching. In fact I was tempted to
Post on here to see if anyone had seen a cheaper version of the whistles dress that you posted. And now that I see it is 25% off I’m seriously tempted to get it, even though that is still much more than I really

Swearwolf · 31/05/2020 15:56

I really like the look of this dress that keeps advertising itself to me: https://www.hush-uk.com/kensington-dress-fan-print-pink/DRS520-659-16.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwq832BRA5EiwACvCWsfqA8g-YsAdl4bA9WBonkTsFp7vjeBC3gsUkI29Y5zQWv6GCfIB-0RoCTj4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sorry that wasn't a great link! However, I'm also short, and the model in the link is apparently 7 inches taller than me... so I worry it would drown me.

flatoutpanic · 31/05/2020 16:02

My friend and I both have the same Kensington dress from Hush (in a different print from the one above) - we’re about 6 inches different in height, but somehow it works on both of us! Would highly recommend.

Love this one too from Mint Velvet

Swearwolf · 31/05/2020 16:54

Ooh flatout that's encouraging! How tall is the shorter of you and your friend? I regret not buying it last summer as I really liked the red pattern they had.
