Summer dresses

I would like to find an all-purpose summer dress – is anyone able to help?

I've been agonising all week over summer dressing and feel fat and/or hot in every combination. Then this morning I put on a dress and realised that A Dress is the solution.

I'm looking for something in a good fabric with a good cut, so I'm expecting to spend some money. However, it should not be so expensive (£150+, Eg Me + Em) that I am afraid to wear it every day, or made of some insane material like silk. It also probably shouldn't be lined.

The Dress should ideally have sleeves of some kind, but not long sleeves (too hot) or tiny cap sleeves. It should absolutely not be empire-line or have a drop waist. A-Line would be fine. Button-down with a lower neckline would be good.

I would like and/or be obliged to have picnics, fulfil childcare duties, walk the dog and see people in this dress, so it should not be too long (maxi) or too short (above the knee). I plan to wear it mostly with Birkenstocks, plimsolls and (when feeling ritzy) chunky brown suede mid-heel sandals. My calves are a bit chunky but needs must.

I am a size 12 and short, about half a stone overweight. I dislike my upper arms and stomach. Other stylish summer suggestions beyond dresses welcome.

Boden Anastasia - last season I presume by the price - £35.00 to £40.00 on eBay. Range is sizes.

swearwolf 5’3 - definitely worth a try!

Thistle72 · 31/05/2020 17:21

Just came on to say I bought a dress from Baukjen last month, it’s called Anastasia. It’s beautiful and gorgeous fabric although quite long.
I love that seaside tones kimono dress, I live in the UK and haven’t ordered from the US. Anybody any experience?

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 31/05/2020 18:02

@thistle72 I ordered from them to Switzerland - they have a UK website and deliver from Poland

My Dress is Seasalt, from a couple of summers ago. It's cotton, short sleeves, pockets, just above knee length (I'm 5'9"), scooped neck but not too low, and a bit like a t-shirt fit with a string tie for the back to pull in the waist. I'll see if they have anything similar this year.

Hush Kensington for sure. It’s so comfy easy to wear and very flattering I’ve got two and would buy more but the new colours won’t suit me!

Itsjustmee · 31/05/2020 18:33

Jo Browns do some really lovely summer dresses
In all types of styles and they aren’t particularly expensive £30 -£60 generally

I’ve got several from last year that I’m wearing this summer and a few from the year before and they wear and wash well
Most of mine are below the knee length as well

Like a PP, I’d recommend Boden’s Amelie. Very versatile.

Peanutbutterkitkats · 31/05/2020 19:35

I just ordered the boden frances dress this morning. Seems to fit your brief. I've also got the hush Kensington a pp mentioned and it is lovely and flattering.

Livingthecovidaloca · 31/05/2020 20:26

Another vote for Hush Kensington, though not massively keen on the new colours... I’m hoping that they bring it out in a nice bright green.

Supersimkin2 · 31/05/2020 20:44

Hush Kensington is a fine dress.

Also a cracker is the Zara sale crispy poplin flowery dress. It's extremely cool in the heat, doesn't need ironing and looks like it was designed this century. Currently £20.00. I have two.

I have 2 Kensingtons and they are so easy to chuck on. I would also buy another, but don't like the current prints, which is annoying. I got one that was a bit too bright for real life, but actually will be fine for lockdown wear. I'll have to dig it out.

I've just bought this, it's a heavy jersey but still quite cool, I'm 5'7" and it sits on the knee. www.mandmdirect.com/01/details/QQ1032/Weird-Fish-Womens-Biscayne-Cotton-Jersey-AOP-Dress-Dark-Denim
