Summer dresses

I would like to find an all-purpose summer dress – is anyone able to help?

I've been agonising all week over summer dressing and feel fat and/or hot in every combination. Then this morning I put on a dress and realised that A Dress is the solution.

I'm looking for something in a good fabric with a good cut, so I'm expecting to spend some money. However, it should not be so expensive (£150+, Eg Me + Em) that I am afraid to wear it every day, or made of some insane material like silk. It also probably shouldn't be lined.

The Dress should ideally have sleeves of some kind, but not long sleeves (too hot) or tiny cap sleeves. It should absolutely not be empire-line or have a drop waist. A-Line would be fine. Button-down with a lower neckline would be good.

I would like and/or be obliged to have picnics, fulfil childcare duties, walk the dog and see people in this dress, so it should not be too long (maxi) or too short (above the knee). I plan to wear it mostly with Birkenstocks, plimsolls and (when feeling ritzy) chunky brown suede mid-heel sandals. My calves are a bit chunky but needs must.

I am a size 12 and short, about half a stone overweight. I dislike my upper arms and stomach. Other stylish summer suggestions beyond dresses welcome.

OP Seasalt is your friend. What do think about the shape of this one www.google.co.uk/search?q=seasalt+mermaid+dress&client=safari&hl=en-gb&prmd=simvn&sxsrf=ALeKk0125sModqJ6Sx9KaR3HmA3t5j0pEQ:1590996037370&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiRxJWNiuDpAhXuRRUIHewmCyAQ_AUoAnoECA0QAg
It’s called the mermaid and you’ll find plenty on eBay. I find Seasalt to be very flattering and great for hot weather.

This one OP, i've never bought anything from fat face, you sound about the same size as me, it's really light and cool and so comfortable, I plan on living in it for the next few months.

Has anyone mentioned White Stuff yet? I have this one, and it is so versatile, but lots more on the website.

Just a tiny update - my Hush Kensington dress arrived today (I bought one on eBay as the current colours wouldn't work on me) and I love it! I was worried it would be too long as I am only short, and I'm carrying some extra weight at the moment, but I just love it. It's so flattering!

Bertucci · 03/06/2020 18:20

I have praised this Hush dress before on here.

I have it in both colours. It is immensely flattering and comfortable. It has sleeves, pockets and it's about shin length. Perfect.

I have this from White Stuff and I love it. You're a bit shorter than me OP.

That Truly dress looks lovely! I prefer the front to the back - the back is cut a bit low for me - the shaping on the front is perfect though.

ManishaK · 05/06/2020 12:48

It is so lovely! I thought that too to be honest, but once I wore it I actually loved it x

blueskys72 · 05/06/2020 13:14

Joe Browns have some nice designs - I'm not sure of the quality of JB though.

ManishaK · 05/06/2020 13:20

oo thanks! i'll have a look x

blueskys72 · 05/06/2020 16:55

Agree with Boden Amelie dress, cut is so flattering, it really does suit all shapes and sizes. Good choice of colours and patterns too.

Can be dressed up with sandals and a blazer or down with trainers and denim/faux leather jacket too.
