Now that the Commonwealth event is nearly over, we have another treat ahead of us. Maxima in Indonesia!

In light of what happened on the previous thread, I'm going to take a leaf out of Elizabeth SMT Holmes' book and say critique the clothes and the styling but not the physical appearances of various royal women.

Happy birthday, Edward! I think he is often overlooked. I know there was the It's a Knockout disaster years ago, but I made mistakes in the early days of my career that I would hate to have people keep dredging up 30 years later.
A friend has met him a couple of times through D of E Award events and says he is always very engaged with the young people he meets.

itswinetime · 10/03/2020 08:34

February this year I'm not sure on the details about who paid staff catering ect but this charity had an event scheduled for this year. Their patron reached out to they and offered the use of one of the palaces (not Buckingham if that makes a difference) and the room was free of charge. They were restricted on dates. I'm not sure if it makes a difference this was the first time the charity held and event at the palace or that they are unlikely to again for a number of years 🤷🏻‍♀️ But there was no room hire and I'm fairly sure the palace sorted all the invites but I couldn't swear if that was free or just for cost.

LizziesTwin · 10/03/2020 08:41

They were lucky!

Invitations are sent out by the charity but the palace provide the cards for the security passes. There are set caterers & porters & furniture hire companies you have to use from an approved list. Police costs are high too.

itswinetime · 10/03/2020 08:48

It seems so I'm not sure they realise that's not the standard. Like I said previous events have been hosted elsewhere and the patron has just visited.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/03/2020 08:57

Edward was a featured speaker at an event in my city several years ago and there was also a meet and greet after. He was very engaging and interesting as a speaker, and people who met him afterward had only nice things to say about him.

BlingLoving · 10/03/2020 09:25

Surely as Kate was the host of this event there wouldn't have been a room hire cost? I mean, a royal patron attending is one thing but kate has host surely implies that at the very least, as host she has to accept some of the costs? Ditto the responsibilities? I was thinking last night that this is one of those events where although we only see her there for 3 hours, it probably involved a SHEDLOAD of work for her team and a moderate amount of meeting/checking/ engaging for her ahead of time because as host surely she has to be involved int he decision making re dates, attendees, decor, agenda, speakers, entertainment, food etc etc etc?

LizziesTwin · 10/03/2020 09:36

Before the Royal family’s funding changed we weren’t charged, now we are. It’s a sign of how important the DofC sees Place2Be that she’s hosting the event. I hope some of the invited guests are impressed & make big donations.

itswinetime · 10/03/2020 09:41

Bling I think you might right I'm fairly sure the event I know about was hosted by the patron as opposed to being attended. They pretty much choose the date and location I'm fairly sure the palace as hosts sent the invites. The charity pretty much got to say yes or no, then picked the guest list arranged some entertainment and I'm not sure who sorted catering but I will ask my friend next time I see her.

I'm wondering if when a royal hosts a charity it's done like this but when the charity of a patron requests to use the venue it's done like Lizzie's twin is used to?

PiedImperial · 10/03/2020 09:43

Bling the charity I work for has a royal patron, and when they host a reception/dinner for us at one of the palaces, we have to pay a "venue charge" ie room hire, plus catering etc.

It may well be at cost, but it's still not cheap!

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 10/03/2020 09:46

Oops forgot to wish Edward a happy birthday- in case there are any royal lurkers Wink

7Worfs · 10/03/2020 09:49

Edward was quite the looker in his youth, judging by the photo posted Shock

PiedImperial · 10/03/2020 09:54

Itswinetime I think you're making a distinction there that doesn't really exist.

Although Kate hosted the reception last night, it is highly unlikely that she thought to herself, I know, let's have a party for place2be to celebrate their anniversary.

What will have happened is that the charity management will have regular meetings with Kate/ Kate's private secretary.

The charity will have proposed having an anniversary event that Kate could host. Kate's office will come up with a date, which the charity has to take or leave. The charity puts together the guest list, and the palace sends out the invites. The charity pays for the event.

This is the way it has always worked for us with our royal patron, whenever they "host" something like that.

Spudlet · 10/03/2020 10:04

@PiedImperial Same with ours. I’m sure the patron’s staff do put some work in, but I think it’s fair to say that the charity does the lion’s share of it!

TheWordmeister · 10/03/2020 13:03

I met Prince Edward at a function. He was a wet lettuce.

And yes, he was wearing the double breasted suit.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 10/03/2020 14:11

How have i got to my great age without realising i share a birthday with Prince Edward Hmm

I always think Sophie looks good company and a bit of a laugh. Like you could have a glass of wine and a good natter with her.

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/03/2020 14:25

Max has brought out a cape again for her second day in Indonesia but I'm a little disappointed that she's gone for such a dishwater shade.

Zara Tindall at Cheltenham.

Spudlet · 10/03/2020 14:32

Well, I like the cut of it, and the pattern on the fabric (although the overall colour is a bit meh). Not sold on that hat though.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 10/03/2020 14:36

I like Max's frock but wtf is on her head? Grin

frugalkitty · 10/03/2020 14:45

I quite like Max's dress.....check out the aquamarine ring she's got on! That I do like!

paradyning · 10/03/2020 15:16

Woah CPV has gone full on Charlie's Angels without the flicky hair!

CarrotVan · 10/03/2020 15:22

That is a most unusual hat

NoGravyForYou · 10/03/2020 16:38

I really really don't like Max's hat. I never thought I could feel so strongly about a hat, I do.

I like the wispy-ness of her dress though.

mistermagpie · 10/03/2020 17:29

I'm just catching up!

Sophie, Kate and Meghan all looked amazing yesterday. I've just bought a dress for a wedding in the same colour as Meghan's so I'm feeling like I'm in fashion for once. I thought her dress was lovely and bold but again, badly fitted which always lets her down. Great hat and makeup though and god, the woman really knows how to bring a confident smile when under so much scrutiny. She's really got guts I think.

Kate looked great in the way that Kate always does - safe choice, great hat and hair but nothing mega exciting. I liked the colour though.

Sophie looked beautiful, it was nice to see her in something different. Edward still looks naff though!

I don't like that blue dress of Kate's. It's a nice colour but a bit 'tacky bridesmaid' for me. Good hair though.

thisenglishlife · 10/03/2020 17:42

Happy birthday Edward!

Sophie and Edward visited the Tiptree factory today.

as host surely she has to be involved in the decision making re dates, attendees, decor, agenda, speakers, entertainment, food etc
I doubt the royals do much of this, surely their teams handle most/all of it? The royal prep would be something along the lines of reading their team's notes/research, learning names/faces, speech prep.
