Royal style: Max and Wax and whacky hats

Now that the Commonwealth event is nearly over, we have another treat ahead of us. Maxima in Indonesia!

In light of what happened on the previous thread, I'm going to take a leaf out of Elizabeth SMT Holmes' book and say critique the clothes and the styling but not the physical appearances of various royal women.

@ElspethFlashman I have to admit I was surprised as I thought it was more of a cocktail frock reception rather than full length gown. But we don't have many gown events to gawk at these days so I'll take what we're given!

Please can Kate lend her hairdresser to Sophie and Max?

RomaineCalm · 09/03/2020 22:29

I thought it was more of a cocktail frock reception rather than full length gown.

I thought that too and then wondered whether it was so that she looked properly 'princessy' with so many children there.

FiveTwoFaster · 09/03/2020 22:32

There seem to be black ties lurking, so she’s not totally cocked up her own dress code of Princess. I tend to go more cocktail length on black tie though, not being so royal.

TheTiaraManager · 09/03/2020 22:35

Loved Meghan's hat this afternoon, it made me want to go to events that require a hat!

Kate looks stunning tonight, that colours is beautiful on her

justasking111 · 09/03/2020 22:51

I just realised that Kate hosted the reception solo.

itswinetime · 09/03/2020 22:52

I think that she probably is the most dressy person there but then she is also the star so I think it works I also agree for kids If they are going to see a princess they would rather sparkle and gown than a more appropriate cocktail dress so I don't think she completely misfired on the dress code.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/03/2020 23:04

Just to clarify: I am in no way criticising Kate for her choice of gown!

I think Meghan looked absolutely stunning in that green dress. In fact, I have loved everything she has worn in the last few days
Beautiful woman.
Agree that Sophie looks great too. Her looks are underrated.

TheWordmeister · 09/03/2020 23:26

Meghan has really pulled it out of the bag these last few days. She seems to be one of those women who is naturally chic and knows what looks good. She has also managed to remain fashionable despite the silly constraints of the RF.

I will miss her style.

Cohle · 09/03/2020 23:56

Yes I think it was sweet of Kate to go full princess for the kids. I imagine if it was an adults event she would have gone cocktail attire instead.

AdaColeman · 10/03/2020 01:33

I loved the emerald green of Meg’s outfit, though I thought the dress was a poor fit for her, too long and baggy on her small frame. Her hat was fab, and I liked that Harry had a matching green jacket lining. They have made a deliberate statement with their colour coordinated clothes this trip, which has worked well to present them as a united couple. I hope they don’t take it too far though, with matching Nordic jumpers! Wink

I liked Kate in warm rust, and loved her hat & hair do, Camilla was lovely in rich deep blue (and no black boots!) and no ones does pearls quite as well as Camilla! I’m a lone voice in not being too keen on Sophie’s outfit.

Anne is off on a brief trip to Canada in May, so perhaps she will treat us to some vintage fashion.

FazakAli · 10/03/2020 03:52

MM needed a slip underneath her cape dress yesterday. I think an M&S or Panx shapewear slip would have prevented the fabric from bunching up. Also, is the Cape removable? The dress would look good if the Cape was removed and altered to fit more closely.

FazakAli · 10/03/2020 03:53

Spanx not panx

LizziesTwin · 10/03/2020 04:26

I think that the palace/Cambridge’s office would have been very flexible about the dress code for the event. No point inviting people involved with a charity if they can’t attend if they haven’t got black tie. By going full on glamour she is stopping an attendee who is in black tie from being self conscious as the smartest person there. I wonder who paid for the event, the palace charges charities for its use and any refreshments would have to be funded.

StartupRepair · 10/03/2020 04:45

I loved Sophie's brooch. Wonder if it is a gift from HMQ?

itswinetime · 10/03/2020 06:22

That's not always true I know charities that have been invited to use the palaces free of charge I'm not sure about refreshments but definitely the room hire was free.

I was brought up that the host should always go all out, in case a guest arrived who was dressier than the host & guest would feel uncomfortable.

What a wonderful world in which to be brought up!

Today is Edward's birthday according to the RF IG. Let's hope Sophie has gifted him 3 single-breasted suits!

He was actually fairly good-looking in his youth.

Lots of positives about Edward on line from yesterday, about how he was chatting to both the Sussexes and Cambridges and 'bridging the gap'. Almost makes up for the double whammy of the double breasted, pinstripe suit. Come on Sophie, we thought you'd cracked this a few threads back. It's funny how Prince Charles is really dapper but none of the other royal men seem to be that fussed. But then I guess it's easy for chaps, they just put on a suit and it's kind of job done.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 10/03/2020 08:07

It was Jay - my parents loved a party. I’m a bit of a wallflower & never have them.

I thought Edward was a star yesterday. He did his best to put Meghan at her ease in a difficult situation.

FiveTwoFaster · 10/03/2020 08:13

Even Piers Morgan referred to Prince Edward as “Kofi Annan”. Sterling work.

LizziesTwin · 10/03/2020 08:20

@itswinetime how recently are you talking about? I’ve been involved with a charity which has to pay everytime since 2009. There’s a reduction in the charge as it’s a charity with a royal patron but the fee is substantial.

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/03/2020 08:21

Edward looked happy to see Harry and Meghan. I'm sure William could have managed the same if he had wanted too. I know it was a church service but it wasn't a sombre occasion. Edward always looks engaged in events. I too wish he'd buy himself some new suits. It's not just the jackets, his trousers seem dated too.
