What does an ageing punk wear to a wedding?

Looking for some advice please. Having managed to avoid them for years, I’m going to a couple of weddings this year, in early summer and late autumn. I have no idea what to wear.

I’m early 50’s, five ft 4”, size 12/14, large bust, apple tummy, slim legs. I only wear black, only wear flat shoes, mostly DMs (I even have silver or maroon going out ones). I don’t go ‘out out’ very often but when I do I wear things like male tuxedo jackets with ankle grazer trousers or pencil skirts with fishnets. My jewellery is mostly black leather with skulls and rivets on. I only wear red lipstick and have short hair, shaved at the sides, long on top. I can only wear v or scoop necks as I have a short neck.

I have a velvet dark flowery tux jacket that I think I could get away with for the autumn wedding (bride has said I can wear all black but I think the other guests might disapprove). Otherwise, I’m looking for an outfit that still has a punk edge that is suitable for weddings that won’t scare the bejeezus out of me when I look in the mirror. Or scare the dog!

My budget is probably up to £150 and I prefer clothing that is simple, I don’t like frills, patterns or fussy details.

Fingers crossed someone can help me as I have no idea where to start.

P.S. Having just read my description back, I assure you I don’t look as bad as I sound (at least, I don’t think so Grin)

Completely out of budget but I bet you’d ROCK this!

abstractprojection · 20/02/2020 15:04

I love the VW dress and think that you would rock it, and it would go with the blazer you described.

I would stick to black but up the elegance

Keanuismine · 20/02/2020 15:08

Whatever the fuck she wants to wear.

iklboo · 20/02/2020 15:10

Too fussy?

What does an ageing punk wear to a wedding?

I was going to say a Vivienne Westwood dress with the aforementioned blazer or leopard print cardi and leopard flats.

user1333796 · 20/02/2020 15:16

Or maybe an All Saints dress, but a lot of them are black.

EraOfTheGrey · 20/02/2020 15:17

CoatTails has it spot on.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing a pencil skirt with a nice top - maybe something with a bit of shimmer, colour or velvet/texture to 'soften' the black/dark colours. You could keep the edgier elements to your accessories for a sophisticated take on the punk look - so being true to yourself but at the same time not risking looking like you are trying to attract all the attention (not that I think you would be, but more traditional/conservative guests might I suppose). Summer weddings tend to be a bit more informal, so you could get away with even a nice jumpsuit or similar. DMs always look fab with a floatier dress as well, if you can find one you like. Thank goodness, we don't have to wear only floral dresses and hats to weddings anymore!

Floisme · 20/02/2020 15:22

It's a cliche but my first thought was Vivienne Westwood too, not just for the punk or because she's awesome but also because she understands women's bodies and works with them, not against.
Her sales are good, especially right at the end, so there's a fighting chance of bagging something in time for autumn. Early summer is trickier although there's always the Outnet.

GoldenPlatitudes · 20/02/2020 15:33

Nothing wrong with wearing black to a wedding, you can always take a bright coloured clutch etc of you wanted to brighten the look.

I quite like this, maybe more retro than punk though

Apparently Liz Hurley is an ageing punk so check her look out Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/02/2020 17:03

Definitely a Westwood if your budget will stretch to it. Easy to wear in the pub with boots too, so not just a one hit wonder.

That red thing is bloody horrible. Please don't wear that.

Peacock print black dress from Banned?

FrostyBamboo · 20/02/2020 17:16

Chuck this over your usual trousers?

FrostyBamboo · 20/02/2020 17:18

To go with those silver DMs of yours?

FrostyBamboo · 20/02/2020 17:19

Just found my second suggestion in white

Margotshypotheticaldog · 20/02/2020 17:22

Those vw dresses are gorgeous, what are her sizes like? Is it possible to see a picture of them on a real person??

abstractprojection · 20/02/2020 17:24

Peacock print black dress from Banned?

I find a lot of retro clothes a bit fancy dress, but this is quite lovely

FrostyBamboo · 20/02/2020 17:27

Ooooh... or red to match your lipstick...

AnnDaloozier · 20/02/2020 17:28

Wear whatever you normally wear but snazzier fabrics/ colours

FingersXssd83 · 20/02/2020 17:28

Was going to say that the two ideas above would love punky/rockabilly feminine but with an edge.

Please share what you choose, would love to know!

AnnDaloozier · 20/02/2020 17:30

Wear shiny cigarette trousers. Or Matt with. Silk t shirt Then red jacket. Fishnet “socks”.

Or a diamanté t shirt.
Don’t change your style. Just ramp it up.

FrostyBamboo · 20/02/2020 17:36

Tux dress - not white, and woukd work with DMs and/or ankle grazer trousers.

FrostyBamboo · 20/02/2020 17:40

And now for something different... shirty dress thing
