What does an ageing punk wear to a wedding?

Looking for some advice please. Having managed to avoid them for years, I’m going to a couple of weddings this year, in early summer and late autumn. I have no idea what to wear.

I’m early 50’s, five ft 4”, size 12/14, large bust, apple tummy, slim legs. I only wear black, only wear flat shoes, mostly DMs (I even have silver or maroon going out ones). I don’t go ‘out out’ very often but when I do I wear things like male tuxedo jackets with ankle grazer trousers or pencil skirts with fishnets. My jewellery is mostly black leather with skulls and rivets on. I only wear red lipstick and have short hair, shaved at the sides, long on top. I can only wear v or scoop necks as I have a short neck.

I have a velvet dark flowery tux jacket that I think I could get away with for the autumn wedding (bride has said I can wear all black but I think the other guests might disapprove). Otherwise, I’m looking for an outfit that still has a punk edge that is suitable for weddings that won’t scare the bejeezus out of me when I look in the mirror. Or scare the dog!

My budget is probably up to £150 and I prefer clothing that is simple, I don’t like frills, patterns or fussy details.

Fingers crossed someone can help me as I have no idea where to start.

P.S. Having just read my description back, I assure you I don’t look as bad as I sound (at least, I don’t think so Grin)

Actually, if you search tux dress on ASOS there are a lot of things that might appeal to your blazer preferences?

I was going to recommend looking at Vivienne Westwood too. I have a number of her dresses and they are remarkable. Have a look on the OUTNET. They sometimes have Westwood.

TheFaerieQueene · 20/02/2020 17:49

This might help.

Hi all

Thanks for your replies. I’ll have a look at them all and report back

I think there's a VW at Bicester Village if you're anywhere nearby. She was my thought too I would look at sales or second hand to stay in budget

Deathraystare · 21/02/2020 10:43

I have decided to make that my reward for when I slim down - a VW dress (or 2!)

eenymeenyminyme · 21/02/2020 10:53

I'd go for something rockabilly, with DMs.

Still you, but looks like you've made an effort.

Let us know what you pick!

Oldraver · 21/02/2020 11:03

I have the peacock dress and it looks fabulous on

sanitygirl · 21/02/2020 14:39

I'd go for black cigarette trousers, silk camisole and a tux style jacket - you can get away with black for the trousers and jacket if you wear a coloured camisole. I have this one from The Kooples which is lovely

It also comes in red

For Heavens sake girl, get a grip. First off, if the bride is happy for you to wear black then obviously it’s you she wants to see on her big day, regardless of what you wear.
Now as far as I can see it, you have one of two choices, neither will cost as much as you are willing to spend. The first is to throw caution to the wind, wear a wig (not black) and dress up on something colourful. Be someone else for the day (it’s only acting). Secondly, get yourself down to Brighton and visit the Lanes, try somewhere like Portabello market, visit a vintage kilo sale or even a charity shop and pick up a Teddy boy suit. So what if you still hanker after such a suit in black, it would look fantastic with a bright pink shirt underneath, or electric blue. Wear with a plain black bootlace tie and b

Cont... and black crepe soled shoes perhaps with laces and/or socks that match your shirt. You would be stylish, smart and I’m sure unique. Above all you’d be comfortable in stuff that you could wear again. If you lived nee me, I’d take you in hand for sure. Whatever you decide upon, enjoy the day.

RuggyPeg · 03/03/2020 07:49

Why on earth are you suggesting she wears a wig? 🙄 That's such a random suggestion. Her hair sounds fab.

TrishTeres · 03/03/2020 08:39

Take the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and discover pastel tones. Noone has to stick so much to one style. I was convinced for many years my face looked less attractive when I wear my hair down. So many people urged me otherwise and I "see it" now
Only wish I'd seen it sooner.

Irismarle · 03/03/2020 15:09

That is lovely and not in-your-face but striking.

Snog · 08/03/2020 19:48

Get some black jeans and a black tshirt add bleach rip them up add nappy pins, top with customised leather jacket and wear your DMs and ripped fish nets style your hair and make up on Debby Harry. Chunky chain jewellery. Job done. Enjoy.

Have a look at some of the Hell Bunny stuff or Joe Brown (Simply Be do the plus range). Both are affordable and work well on a variety of shapes, sizes and ages. For shoes.... has to be Irregular Choice.

Cinderellasma · 08/03/2020 20:16

I say go in one of your suits, add a fancy top hat with maybe a statement splash of pink if you really wanted to jazz it up and go for it. The tweed version of you came to my wedding. She looked class, but most importantly she was there.

Reginabambina · 08/03/2020 20:29

A bit different from what you describe but sometimes it worth while considering things that you normally wouldn’t. Any of the following paired with DMs would be good imo

Leather jacket over the top would also be a good call if chilly.

RoseLillian · 08/03/2020 20:33

I think FingersXssd83 nailed it with the wiggle dress. That would look amazing with your body shape and style.

Nanalisa60 · 08/03/2020 20:34

Look on the Hell bunny web site!! Some lovely dresses on there

AnneJeanne · 08/03/2020 20:46

A long kimono over slim black trousers and a silky vest?
