What does an ageing punk wear to a wedding?

Looking for some advice please. Having managed to avoid them for years, I’m going to a couple of weddings this year, in early summer and late autumn. I have no idea what to wear.

I’m early 50’s, five ft 4”, size 12/14, large bust, apple tummy, slim legs. I only wear black, only wear flat shoes, mostly DMs (I even have silver or maroon going out ones). I don’t go ‘out out’ very often but when I do I wear things like male tuxedo jackets with ankle grazer trousers or pencil skirts with fishnets. My jewellery is mostly black leather with skulls and rivets on. I only wear red lipstick and have short hair, shaved at the sides, long on top. I can only wear v or scoop necks as I have a short neck.

I have a velvet dark flowery tux jacket that I think I could get away with for the autumn wedding (bride has said I can wear all black but I think the other guests might disapprove). Otherwise, I’m looking for an outfit that still has a punk edge that is suitable for weddings that won’t scare the bejeezus out of me when I look in the mirror. Or scare the dog!

My budget is probably up to £150 and I prefer clothing that is simple, I don’t like frills, patterns or fussy details.

Fingers crossed someone can help me as I have no idea where to start.

P.S. Having just read my description back, I assure you I don’t look as bad as I sound (at least, I don’t think so Grin)

Could this work?

OP, one of the best dressed women I've ever seen at a wedding was wearing very chunky, biker-style boots with a dress and jacket. It was about 20 years ago and I still remember her. She looked effortlessly cool.

I also think that a good jacket and clutch can work wonders, both to spruce up and tie together an outfit. At another wedding, I noticed a woman dressed very simply who looked great: just a pencil skirt and vest top with chunky heels, jacket and clutch. Her hair looked fab too and really helped with the whole look.

Neither of them was wearing anything complicated or traditional. So, I'd say, keep it simple and 'you'.

A rockabilly style dress - something with skulls, cherries or flames on maybe?

I like this polka dot rose one.

And this purple one.

If you search on Amazon for Rockabilly or Hepburn dresses you'll have loads of choice. They aren't expensive, so you can get a petticoat in your budget to give it the edge.

There’s always reasonably priced good quality VW stuff on eBay! About 3 years ago I got a gorgeous slightly sparkly shorter version of PP dress for about £70, immaculate. Gave a look at the website and stalk any styles you want, or just have a look - there was a lovely red tartan dramatic ruching affair when I was looking, which I pictured immediately on reading your pist

SpinachQueen · 09/03/2020 17:48

So what have you chosen, OP?

MadamBatty · 09/03/2020 17:59

I bought a VW Sunday dress secondhand for a wedding. Was not that pricy as it needed cleaning and a teeny repair. It’s amazing, just simple cotton but so ridiculously comfy and flattering. It’s the same model as in the photo but white with huge black spots (so more black than white). Well worth keeping yours eyes on eBay

Wear your awesome-sounding velvet tux jacket with a white silk shirt unbuttoned and untucked and either sharp black tux trousers or a miniskirt and your DMs. A pencil skirt won’t have the same feel and will hide too much of your legs.
This isn’t real silk but this sort of thing: m.zara.com/uk/en/blouse-with-contrast-bow-p02539450.html?v1=42106409&v2=1445747#origin=related

If you go for trousers, wear with flat pointy shoes rather than DMs.

Whatever the hell she damn well wants!
You are a punk, just punk it up.
Bride says fine, she's the only one to consider really.
Wear what you want
