Grey hair boredom

So I have given up the dye and I love:

No roots
Some lovely white

I am bored though and it's still got some dark grey/brown wedges through it

I've done highlights and they always end up yellow or warm blonde

Silver shampoo or conditioner is a con or at best keeps it from going yellow

What can I do to stop giving him and chucking a box dye on it?

Some lovely words here. Off to find my hand cream Smile

I'm with you Op.
I stopped colouring 4 years ago (at 48).. cut a lot off, and painstakingly suffered the LINE as my brown grew out. Mine is now all natural and below my shoulders.
On the odd day I like it.. white at the front and streaked throughout, but most days I look just dull brown and grey and washed out. And it makes my skin look yellow ( hoping it's not my wine intake!)
I did talk to my hairdresser about whether I should just colour it again but to my surprise she said she wouldn't if it was her.. the white front will show through quickly and it will get more and more difficult to cover it.

Still tempted tho! For now I'm browsing hair cuts on Pinterest and thinking maybe it's time for a good chop, but am a bit worried I'll end up with short grey old lady hair!!

SouthWestmom · 17/02/2020 23:15

I can't post a screenshot as I've used up my allowance I think but Sharon Osborne can't have natural hair - she was red until recently. Surely that's bleach then tint for now?

For me that's an example of unachievable - mine isn't like that after four years. It's great she's doing it but I'd like to see patchy grey hair and dark streaks in slebs!

However this thread has really made me think about changing me not my hair

I have a few friends who went grey. It was a long boring process for them and one gave up halfway through.

These are my personal observations at close quarters on half a dozen subjects:
A good(ish) haircut before the process is complete makes you stick to your resolution
The darker lower parts/ edges look quite sexy and a bit rock-n-roll. Not sure if they can be re-created at the hairdresser but it looks cool on those who start with dark hair.
For some mysterious reason, natural grey hair looks thicker and bouncier. Maybe not using all those chemical does it some good.
Their skin tone does not look washed out even without makeup and their eyes, regardless of colour, are really emphasised and stand out, it’s very interesting. Maybe it is a natural balance with the colouring.
Grey suits my friends incredibly well, they all have different features and skin tones, eye colours, length of hair, they are very different from each other and it works for all of them.

In conclusion, seeing that you have already invested time in this, stick with it and wait for the final result. You can always dye it back if you get bored.

SouthWestmom · 17/02/2020 23:18

Medusa missed your post, thank you for the empathy. I think going back to dye would be a big commitment, you'd have to be prepared to get it done every four weeks or so maybe?

Like a pp I have several piercings in an ear and am going to try to pretty them up. I'm also going to look up the Viral hair color mentioned.

It's just such a let down now I'm here! I bought I'd look like Helen Mirren (but a bit younger) and I feel more like Ena Sharples

My friendship group is between late 30s to nearly 50. I'm midway.

Of us, one doesn't yet need to dye their hair, one is blonde and if they do it doesn't show. One of them (me) is growing it out. One (my sister, would do anything rather than stop dying it) and 2 have grown theirs out and look fab.

Cocolapew · 17/02/2020 23:55

Thanks for the hair love, :swishes dream hair::♥️
Sharon Osbourne spent 8 hours getting it coloured, her hairdresser says she is 100% white and couldn't keep up with covering it since she does a talk show everyday, so they've coloured it to let her natural colour take over.

I don’t understand why grey isn’t looked on as just another hair colour like blonde or brown. Why it’s sort of “other”. It’s one of those random things I wonder in my insomniac moments. Not to mention the whole men as silver fox, women as dowdy and frumpy BS.

itsUnderMyPillow · 18/02/2020 06:31

The one thing that I've found as I have aged is that I seem to look better when sun kissed ( not full on tan, just a touch ) I think it's because my hair is white in places, mainly framing my face, and so my face needs a bit more colour to make me not look dead ! Rocking a good lipstick helps too !

SouthWestmom · 18/02/2020 07:23

I left that group (the one linked) as I found it quite depressing !!

Interesting on Sharon Osborne, thank you.

Because grey is a sign of age? Rather than a natural colour? And appears slowly and randomly rather than waking up with a full head of lively swishy steel grey or soft white?

EngagedAgain · 18/02/2020 07:24

@gingersausage, yes, because there are women (usually young) who dye their hair various shades of grey, I've yet to see one yet that didn't look nice. Also, funnily enough before that trend started I one day thought to myself 'wouldn't it be funny if people actually dyed their hair grey'. 🤔

woodhill · 18/02/2020 08:33

Yes at least it sets a trend if SO has decided to go natural and perhaps it will become more the norm?

Cocolapew · 18/02/2020 09:13

Silver Circle and Silver Revolution are better FB pages.
Grombre UK is also good, most people on that seem younger.

TheReef · 18/02/2020 14:24

Here's mine, the difference between the grey and blonde looks quite drastic in the photo but it doesn't look as severe in rl. I'm going to wait until until the grey is shoulder length and then chop off the bleached ends (they break anyway)

I've started to use 'milkshake purple shampoo and conditioner' not cheap but it does make my ends match my roots

The top of my head!
What on earth do I do about the short curly new greys?! 😳

2years apart. No more 2weekly dying anymore. I did go blonde between these pics but didn’t suit my cool skin tone.

Ooh lovely hair making an entrance!

I use Bumble and bumble curl oil gel for my wild shirt hair even when I've straightened it. Just a little bit on dry hair seems to hold it

@TheReef

Your hair looks stunning!

EngagedAgain · 19/02/2020 10:43

@GoldenGumballs, I think you made the right choice. Your natural hair suits your skin tone whereas yes agree, I think blonde wouldn't. I can see by first pic how keeping up with the roots would be a continuous chore. From what I can see the new look looks great.

DameDoom · 19/02/2020 13:16

Here is mine 14 months since my last half head of highlights. Have about 2 inches of colour left and will get one of those chopped tomorrow.
I use the Bleach London purple shampoo once a week to keep it bright and am pretty pleased with it. My hair has been left to dry naturally but when I do blow dry it properly, the white gleams.
Am Olaplexing every Sunday and have just discovered scalp exfoliator which I cannot do without.
I don’t want to have the same ubiquitous blonde highlights as all my friends even though they look great so will continue on the last leg of my grey mission.

Sorry - the photos look quite blonde but my hair is definitely white/grey in normal light.
I have had a lot of fun with blush and lips lately. Am turning into a regular Aunt Sally.
