Is there such a thing as a fashionable cardigan?

I'm back to work after mat leave next week. My office fluctuates wildly in temperature so need a cardigan or similar. Do fashionable ones exist?

I have an Aran knit cardigan. It's got compliments which is nice but my office is so cold I just want to keep warm.

I think it's a tricky one and I love a cardy Grin I think avoid waterfall cardigans, as they tend to be an older look and new mum wardrobe very per una. Just a normal black cardigan fitted should be ok, I tend to buy a few sizes up, so not so tight, since babies. Maybe it's just me but I find cardigans ridiculously small fitting so you can barely do them up.

The over sized cardigans are quite fashionable but I'm not sure they 'work' for work, depends on how casual you can get away with.

My examples are quiet budget, but you can find at a range of prices

Yes! I wear long, fitted cardigans with a simple dress underneath, and heels. By long I mean knee-length.
It's possible to be warm and elegant at the same time.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 27/01/2020 15:56

I've given up on trying to find a 'trendy' cardigan, and now I just go for ones which I love, and which are well made.

My current favourite is a really soft, grey cashmere one, with a delicate nordic design around the wrists and hem.

Or, you could just wear something like this, and just act confident? Grin

(I mean, I actually kindof love it... but I don't think it's quite what you're looking for!!)

I’m wearing a camel boyfriend cardigan from Pure via the charity shop.
I probably wouldn’t have spent lots of money on it, but since I’ve bought it I’ve worn it everyday.

iswhois · 27/01/2020 16:05

I have one which falls to the floor which I love

I think only oversized ones look OK. Tight fitting ones always look a bit frumpy imo

SurpriseSparDay · 27/01/2020 16:09

A cardigan is only fashionable when being sold by Acne Studios. Unfortunately even this will not make the thing look stylish once bought and worn by a living, breathing human female.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/01/2020 16:11

Cardigans are very fashionable at the moment, at least the short chunky v neck kind. Long cardigans aren't exactly fashionable but I think they can look good, as long as they don't stop at mid thigh.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 27/01/2020 16:17

According to DH there never ever would be a cardigan made that could or should be worn🤣
Obviously I love them and wear them all the time! Shorter chunky ones seem to be trendier-as evidenced by 15 year old DD stealing mine!

MaxAmount · 27/01/2020 16:50

I have a cropped cardigan that fastens at the neck. Otherwise a straight edged cardigan works best for my ample chest - I can't do the Grandpa look or the belted thing.

Runningonempty84 · 27/01/2020 17:03

No.

mindproject · 27/01/2020 17:06

Yes, cardigans buttoned up to the top are very fashionable right now. All the K-pop stars are wearing them.

I've always worn cardigans, I have at least 30.

Lamentations · 27/01/2020 17:08

Who cares? I bloody love a cardi. More versatile than a jumper, more flattering for the large of bust and/or shoulders, a strategically done up button creates an illusion of a nipped in waist. What's not to love?

99problemsandthecatis1 · 27/01/2020 17:11

Yeah, I was kind of figuring it was a no, but I just want to be warm. I've just thrown out several offensive cardigans from my past return to work, including a waterfall one. They were bobbly generally hideous.

I'll take a look at some of the links

Fat face and John Lewis have nice cardigans at the moment.

LunaTheCat · 27/01/2020 18:10

I am a cardi woman - if you are short and busted jumpers can make you look like a walking boob - cardigans are the answer!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 27/01/2020 18:12

Cropped-ish and boxy with v-neck and puffy sleeves is fashionable just now. Have a look at & Other Stories.

CherryPavlova · 27/01/2020 18:16

A simple, classic cardigan in cashmere or even merino will never date and always looks smarter than goose pimples.
Fashionable cardigans tend to look cheap and frumpy - hideous waterfalls, chains across the front or strange batwing sleeves. Just a classic in a nice pastel or neutral with little pearl buttons. Very pretty.

Stumpedasatree · 27/01/2020 18:22

I think cardis are great and mine do not look frumpy. I have neat fitting ones, usually cashmere or merino, and chunkier oversized ones which are open, with no buttons. To me, the frumpy cheap looking ones are those found in most high street retailers these days that are made of acrylic. Waterfall cardigans are also in the frumpy category!

Craftycorvid · 27/01/2020 18:28

I’m a bad example (for many reasons best not gone into) but I pay zero attention to fashion. Personally I think you can never go wrong with classic cashmere in an unfussy ‘boyfriend’ style, aran, a cheeky animal print or fairisle. I think whatever it is, make sure it works with the outfit. What can look frumpy is the very obvious ‘emergency cardigan’ that lives on the back of your office chair and goes with literally nothing in your wardrobe.

(Though the items you mention have surely never been considered stylish?)

Lunaballoon · 27/01/2020 18:44

I’m a fan of cardigans at work too but definitely not waterfalls. They scream out middleaged frump! Uniqlo have a good selection.

FrontRowSeat · 27/01/2020 18:46

Get the &otherstories one with silver dinosaur buttons..... so cool.
