First day at work shoe/trouser dilemma (pic)

Starting back at work tomorrow for first time in 5yrs, last time I worked it was all flared and boot cut trousers. I thought this might look dated now so I bought some straight leg trousers but do they look silly with court shoes?

Don’t tuck into boots! Chelsea boots are good but I’d stick to brogues or flats. Can you afford anything new? Those pants in the picture are £25 from next.

Boots tucked in looks fine - ankle boots are very “in” at the moment

The trousers taken up two inches look good too.

HermioneWeasley · 26/01/2020 09:03

Skirt is also fine!

Good luck on your first today tomorrow

pipnchops · 26/01/2020 09:03

I wore the skirt to the interview and only have one blouse that goes with it and I wore them both to the interview! Wondering if I have time to go shopping today but I don't think I do!

I think the trousers rolled up with court shoes looks the best- hope it goes well tomorrow- must be exciting but a bit daunting too

olympicsrock · 26/01/2020 09:04

Yes shorter trousers are better. The boots don’t work. Not smart enough and don’t work with the trousers.
I hope your first day goes well. Just remember that people look most at your face so a big smile and nice hair makes the biggest difference.

Alanna1 · 26/01/2020 09:04

Skirt is fine with court heels
Trousers are fine shortened with court heels.
Good luck for your first day!

pipnchops · 26/01/2020 09:04

Thanks everyone, you're so helpful.

Skirt fine with courts too

collywobblescar · 26/01/2020 09:05

They need to be cut just above the ankle. You'll look lovely, good luck!!

Rystall · 26/01/2020 09:05

Trousers taken up two inches or skirt for your first day back. Can you take up the trousers yourself? . You could always use that iron on web stuff if you’d struggle with sewing ( like I would). Depends on the job but the boots might be too casual.

Very best of luck OP!!

DearHappy · 26/01/2020 09:09

Yes trousers shorter with court shoes!

puds11 · 26/01/2020 09:10

Rolled up trousers or skirt will be fine Smile

CountFosco · 26/01/2020 09:11

The third picture with the courts look better but I'd wear shorter yet, ankle skimmer means just that, you want the hem on or just above the ankle bone.

Do you have flats? Heels are not the height of fashion at the moment. Some sensible brogues or loafers with a flash of ankle will look more modern.

I'm not sure the boots work at all with these trousers. Trousers generally end just above the top of the boot but for those boots you'd need a wide legged crop rather than a straight leg. A chelsea boot would look better but you need to see a flash of skin between the top of the boot and the bottom of the trouser.

pipnchops · 26/01/2020 09:14

Thanks for the good luck wishes, really appreciate it. I didn't mention this is more like a trial day as well so it's really important I make a good impression. So I'm thinking i might need to go shopping today! I'll try on those trousers at next what kind of top would go with that? I am hourglass shape so I'm thinking something floaty and tucked in?

Missed the skirt, it's fine as well. Wear the trousers the first day and the skirt later in the week. Most people won't remember what you wore for an interview anyway, can you remember what they wore?

CountFosco · 26/01/2020 09:17

Silky and drapy tucked in sounds perfect. Just avoid too low a neckline. What's the job?

Iamthewombat · 26/01/2020 09:17

Don’t tuck your trousers into the boots.

I’d suggest going with the skirt for day 1 unless you can get to a shop today and buy the suggested 7/8 cigarette trousers. Your own trousers, rolled up, don’t look right.

Also second the brogues/loafers suggestion in preference to the heels you have. Unfortunately nothing dates as quickly as shoe and trouser shapes. In five years’ time we might be scorning skinny trousers, brogues and pointy heels, but not now!

Good luck on your first day.

Jomarchsburntskirt · 26/01/2020 09:20

The 8.58:04 pic looks great. None of the others. Good luck 💐

Teateaandmoretea · 26/01/2020 09:23

I can never be arsed with wearing smart trousers it's a minefield then you get it right, gain a Kilo at the end of your cycle and it doesn't fit. I just wear dresses for work, they are a complete outfit and go with any old pair of shoes you chuck on. Plus I find them more comfortable and more forgiving re 'fat days' I'd go shopping today and buy a cheapish wrap dress or something like that. You can buy such nice tights these days for the winter Smile

Medievalist · 26/01/2020 09:23

I wore the skirt to the interview and only have one blouse that goes with it and I wore them both to the interview!

I interviewed 4 people last week and couldn't begin to tell you what any of them were wearing. So I wouldn't let that put you off!

Agree shorter trousers with courts look better than fine!

Good luck Thanks

pipnchops · 26/01/2020 09:25

Thanks, don't want to say what the job is in case it's outing as its quite niche, its in an industry where I imagine everyone would dress very fashionably though and I'm just rubbish at that. It'll be on a 0 hours contract so if they don't like me they just won't use me again so I'm really keen not to mess this up.

Well you will look fine and you can adapt your look if you need to in time.
