Royal style: forget all your stresses as we talk royal dresses

Previous thread

Now. A request. Can we please keep this to critiquing the clothes rather than the wearer?

So if you want to talk about what Meghan's wearing then fine, go ahead. I'm not even saying you have to like everything she wears. This applies to all royal women - if you don't like an outfit then do feel free to say so.

But if you want to talk about "Megxit" then please go to one of the many many other MN threads about it and leave us to our clothes chatter!

I did a generic small bob. Certainly wasn’t about to do a Maybot, dear oh dear!

BlingLoving · 21/01/2020 17:31

@spudlet - that's my fear! I am 90% positive it would happen with the queen. But am worried I wouldn't be able to help myself and down I'd bob with William. Ick. Will lock my knees if the opportunity ever comes up.

Maybe that's why Meghan wanted out? the curtseying was too cringeworthy for a self-made American!? Grin

itswinetime · 21/01/2020 17:32

Agree I think I would for the queen. I'd like to think I wouldn't for the others but I'm a bit of a sheep and I would probably do a small bob if everyone else was.

I'm hoping personally that once the queen is gone, curtsying and bowing will be a think of the past.

Spudlet · 21/01/2020 17:50

It’s true, the knees sort of take over! ConfusedShock

AudacityOfHope · 21/01/2020 17:59

If I curtsyed I suspect my husband would divorce me Grin

"The royals do work, but I don't think it's something you can really compare to a 'normal' job.*

You absolutely can't compare it to a normal job they are "working" 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year on one sense (because they can never be totally off duty and just do what they want, when they want) and working less than 9-5.30, 5 days a week, 48 weeks of the year. Any calculation of public duties is going to be well short because we have no way of working out how much preping, despatch reading, private meetings etc goes on. Does travel count? Do public private events (HMQs birthday etc.) count? What about hair and makeup time?

itswinetime · 21/01/2020 19:02

Does anyone know of the European royals publish similar stats to the British royal family?

justasking111 · 21/01/2020 19:12

Reading Jephsons book it was amusing that the Royals tended not to drink but the courtiers took every opportunity to get soused. Their long lunch breaks were detailed in the book. It is no wonder their heads have been spinning for the last month, they must have been shocked. I remember them grumbling about getting messages early from MM

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 21/01/2020 19:53

I can curtsy beautifully. It was a necessary skill for ballroom dancing - which I did seriously for a decade. I’m not sure whether I would do so, but if I did then I’d look much more elegant than Theresa May.

TSSDNCOP · 21/01/2020 19:59

Didn’t you all learn to curtesy at ballet? Life skill right there Grin

frugalkitty · 21/01/2020 20:21

I never did ballet.....I did belly dance though so I could shimmy instead Grin

Just seen an advert for the Thomas Markle interview on Channel Five.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 21/01/2020 21:20

Talking of curtsying, ballet etc makes reminds me of my mother & her thing about us girls (me & my sisters) having good deportment.
DM would have us glide up & down the living room with a Freemans catalogue balanced on our heads. If it didn't fall off then she was happy with our posture & poise.
That's one of my party tricks being able to walk around with a book on my head.
I can also hold a perfect yoga headstand & yoga tree position.
Though I'm beginning to wonder if DM had actually inserted minuscule weights & magnets into us in order to get perfect balance 😂

TSSDNCOP · 21/01/2020 21:51

Tracy you were brought up right.

StCharlotte · 21/01/2020 22:21

I learnt to curtsey by doing ballet as well. But a ballet curtsey would be seriously OTT in front of a royal, even the Queen.

SpokeTooSoon · 21/01/2020 22:24

😂 I did ballet too and we learned a very elaborate curtsy called a reverence.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=o1eV2Mgc_BI

I’m imagining doing that in front of HM! 😂

Wetdogloveshubert · 21/01/2020 22:42

Catherine has launched her big project: www.5bigquestions.org.uk she visited a project in Birmingham in this snazzy blouse and a chunky gold bracelet which is a surprising departure.

The survey is well set up, and brief, so it will be interesting to see what happens with the results.

Interesting timing too - the press were pre-briefed as it's already on tomorrow's papers, but released late enough to hit the States for afternoon/teatime news?

paradyning · 21/01/2020 22:52

Would love to do the reverence in front of HM. Complete piss take.
She'd get an outstretched hand from me. And I'd probably get sacked.

MotherofPearl · 21/01/2020 23:03

I've fallen a bit behind on here so apologies if this has been posted already, but what are everyone's thoughts about this outfit of Camilla's? I like the coat on her but think the black boots are all wrong and ruin the whole look. Warm chestnut brown books would have looked far nicer.

frugalkitty · 21/01/2020 23:06

I'm not sure I like that blouse on Kate, just saw the pics on IG. I think I like the zig zag, but then the pussy bow spoils it, it's too floppy to work with the spikey-ness of the pattern. The zig zag should be retro or edgy, but the style of blouse is neither....hmm, it's a no from me after all.

thisenglishlife · 21/01/2020 23:08

A Missoni top?
The EY initiative has been launched after five years of development and this is part of a mini tour.

Agree about Cam's boots. Brown suede would have been better.
I think Kate has a walk-in wardrobe just for pussy bows now.

MotherofPearl · 21/01/2020 23:17

Not at all keen on Kate's blouse. Far too much going on.
