Royal style: forget all your stresses as we talk royal dresses

Previous thread

Now. A request. Can we please keep this to critiquing the clothes rather than the wearer?

So if you want to talk about what Meghan's wearing then fine, go ahead. I'm not even saying you have to like everything she wears. This applies to all royal women - if you don't like an outfit then do feel free to say so.

But if you want to talk about "Megxit" then please go to one of the many many other MN threads about it and leave us to our clothes chatter!

I don't have an issue with photos of Meghan on this thread if we're just talking about the clothes. I don't think she's entirely opted out but as @itswinetime says, it's a bit of a grey area so let's just see what the coming weeks brings.

Photos like the one at the women's shelter are fair enough as she's posed for them but tbh I'm not keen on papped photos of anyone. Be it Meghan popping out for groceries, Kate on the school run, Camilla down her local boozer etc etc! Ok so I might be interested in photos of that last one...

ElspethFlashman · 17/01/2020 11:07

But the issue is that that visit was not a Royal visit.

It was a private visit in another country and the photos were just on Facebook. And it was not a charity that she is a mentor for. She literally just rang them up and got an invite.

Does not constitute anything Royal, to me. One could also argue its part of a PR strategy that I feel uncomfortable with, and would rather avoid seeing.

BlingLoving · 17/01/2020 11:11

Elspeth - The thing is that she IS a royal. Whether or not they choose to have a backseat and less formal role, that doesn't change the fact that she's married a member of the royal family.

Does attending a polo match at which William and harry are playing count as a formal royal event? No, of course it doesn't. But we are all happy to look at those photos because of who they are. Ditto, Eugenie and Beatrice have no official role but nonetheless attend various events to raise the profile of charities and activities because the fact that they are princesses goes a long way.

I think we're being disingenuous and, frankly, cruel, if we now say that she's not part of the royal family.

BlingLoving · 17/01/2020 11:13

Also, I'm not going to lie, on pap shots I do actually quite like ones where I get to see what they wear on "normal" days. Eg kate at Waitrose or Meghan getting on a boat. I hate myself for clicking on the pictures as I think it's unfair they get papped like that, but I do enjoy seeing what they're wearing.

itswinetime · 17/01/2020 11:17

I agree exceptions to be made if shots of any royal down the local boozer become available.

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/01/2020 11:19

Zara Phillips isn't technically a royal but I don't have issues with photos of her being posted either. The recent ones of her and Mike at the races down under we're fine and we regularly discuss her clothes too.

AudacityOfHope · 17/01/2020 11:22

I think we're in danger of taking the moral high ground to the point where we will have nothing to talk about.

No part time royals, no real-life shots that aren't at least semi-official?

All smacks a bit of 'don't let the door smack you in the arse on the way out, Megs'.

She is still a duchess, whether that's approved by this thread or not.

BlingLoving · 17/01/2020 11:23

@audacityOfHope Yes Yes!

[although many many people want her to be stripped of her Duchess title, dontcha know!?]

mrscampbellblackagain · 17/01/2020 11:30

I think the pap shots are intrusive but shamefully like to see what they are wearing.

This has all just high lighted how utterly ridiculous titles are in this day and age. Get rid of all of them. The titles that is.

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/01/2020 11:31

Imagine what those people might achieve if they turned their efforts to something that could really make a difference to the world @BlingLoving?

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 17/01/2020 11:34

Come to think of it, the Casiraghi women aren't royal either but we've certainly discussed them on this thread. So discussion of Meghan's clothes are still fine by me!

The reactions in the press to the shots of Kate driving make me laugh - "look how stressed she is" etc etc. Well wouldn't you be momentarily stressed if you were driving in the rain when it was dark, kids in the back, busy road, and camera flashes kept going off in front of you??

OP posts:
BlingLoving · 17/01/2020 11:36

@QueenOfTheAndals Grin

itswinetime · 17/01/2020 11:42

For me I'm happy with all the non working royals at events polo, races even other celeb weddings. I don't like the papped shots like the ones on the cars with the kids (although I accept I'm a hypocrite as I click the links and comment). I don't mind the papped ones we had of the Zindall/Cambridge's day out or those ones from the polo as they seem less intrusive although maybe being on the receiving end you would feel differently.

I don't really think we can police to much what is posted on the thread as long as there are no personal attacks going on (which I think has always been managed pretty well). Then people can post what they want and if your not interested don't comment. The threads move pretty fast so the focus doesn't tend to sit on one person for long. I think any other system and it will be impossible to police and the threads will die out as no one will know who or what can be posted about.

banivani · 17/01/2020 12:07

I also disagree that Meghan (and Harry) have opted out of RF. To me it is quite clear that they are willing to do engagements. More like they're opting out of the UK.

Can sympathise with enjoying everyday clothes too, although for me it's not my focus.

Spudlet · 17/01/2020 13:13

Meghan is still a Royal, as is Harry, and I’m still interested in her clothes. If we were going to limit things to only ‘working’ Royals on official Royal visits, we’d have very little to discuss - although I agree that pap shots are unpleasant (I like seeing the outfits too but it’s not great that they can’t drop their children off without flashbulbs popping at them).

SenecaFalls · 17/01/2020 13:18

I think we're being disingenuous and, frankly, cruel, if we now say that she's not part of the royal family.

I agree. We've been showing pictures of non-working royals since these threads began. But let's now target Meghan for exclusion because she has stepped back. I don't think we can police threads, but my feeling is that if people want to discuss what they perceive to be Meghan's personal faults, there are plenty of other threads (especially of the "she stole our prince" variety) for that.

Becles · 17/01/2020 13:20

@AudacityOfHope I agree.

Please could all the Megsxit posters try really hard to keep their negative attitudes on the other million threads with barely suppressed venom.

This has been a lovely group from the off and the tone of some posters, especially in the last week when trying to push an agenda, has been annoying.

Crown Smile Talk tiaras and light goss, how best to keep a prince in storage happy or more clothing chat please Wine

I agree with this:
I think we're in danger of taking the moral high ground to the point where we will have nothing to talk about.

And this:
The threads move pretty fast so the focus doesn't tend to sit on one person for long. I think any other system and it will be impossible to police and the threads will die out as no one will know who or what can be posted about.

StCharlotte · 17/01/2020 13:36

Anyway.... let's talk Marmite.

I think CPV's trouser suits are the Swedish equivalent of Kate's pussy bow midi dresses. You either love 'em or hate 'em.

(I loathe the trouser suits on CPV but love the dresses on Kate.)

Thisenglishlife · 17/01/2020 14:01

Kate has a great collection of Gianvito Rossi shoes.

Pumps in nude, black, red, burgundy, dark green and silver. Plus heels with black straps and black block heels.

banivani · 17/01/2020 14:17

StCharlotte Nobody can love that trouser suit. Wink I am a CPV apologist because I like her attitude to her rôle and what she wears, but boxy jackets and cropped legs are not great for anyone not walking the runway. They're so dull! Fabric looks nice though.

Curly Forgot to comment on the maternity ball gown! She does look gorgeous but the dress isn't very exciting. Bread and butter really. But when you're pregnant it's just great to find something decent to wear and you don't want anything too demanding most of the time.

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/01/2020 14:26

I like that salmon pink skirt suit of Kate's, it has a bit of a retro vibe.

@banivani agree re CPV and as she's going to be queen regnant it's fair enough that fashion takes a backseat for her.

I like that black midi lace-y dress on Kate in the second collage. What was that event for?

If you meant this one @NoGravyForYou then it was when DOC attended a reception at the British Embassy in Paris (March 2017, I think).

Outfit details: Bespoke Alexander McQueen dress, Gianvito Rossi shoes and Balenciaga earrings.
