Not such an amazing dress. Or is it? Should I get the skirt?

Thanks to @posterRemusLupinsBiggestGroupie amazing dress thread, and a birthday meal out where my standby Hush Tara dress made me feel dull rather than special, I have decided I need a new "going out" outfit. So the odd trip for a meal/cocktails/the pub with friends which require more than jeans and a jumper (my normal wear) but nothing totally smart.

Stuff has arrived and I have been trying on - but I go style-blind when looking in the mirror- especially if outside of my comfort zone jeans and a jumper

So please will you cast your much better eyes over the attached. Ignoring the fluffy hair and duff photo abilities..

Ooh Im loving the skirt and with shirt tucked in.As others have said...the dress seems to be hiding your lovely figure.x

managedmis · 10/01/2020 17:36

You look fab in the jeans and belt

ChopOrNot · 10/01/2020 19:52

Just a quick update. Size 8 skirt arrived - it fitted OK but as it was tighter it sat higher and was therefore too short for my liking. Prefer the slightly looser 10 - less risk of looking like I should be hanging around a street corner Grin and more room for food when eating out

I have decided to keep it - it looks pretty good with jumpers/t-shirts and trainers so quite liking the addition to my wardrobe.

I also got a XS of the All Saints shirt. In someways the slightly less volume looked better - but it was a minimal difference looks wise. However it was a bit snug across the shoulders and weirdly the cuffs so all felt a bit restrictive (despite the voluminous style). So sticking with the S.

Thank you for all your help. And the hair love Grin

Glad you've found some stuff you love. Please could you link to the AllSaints shirt?

Ninkanink · 10/01/2020 23:14

@ChopOrNot Bear in mind that your leather skirt will likely stretch at least one size, so you might be better off with the size 8.

Agree the shirt/jeans outfit looks great on you - very chilled, not too try-hard, but looks well put together.

Ikeameatballs · 10/01/2020 23:49

I love the shirt and jeans outfit, looks great.

ChopOrNot · 11/01/2020 11:04

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie www.allsaints.com/women/tops-and-shirts/allsaints-harriet-sparkle-shir/?colour=5&category=507 Here you are. Too much at full price but dealable with in the sale. I ordered the smaller one from Next even though it is full price there (just because it is quicker to arrive/easier to return - All Saints delivery is sslllooowwwww). If the XS had been the right size I would have sent it back to Next and ordered the sale one from the AS website.

@Ninkanink - I am aware it will stretch - but the 8 was just too snug, mainly around the waist band area (which although is not a waistband as such, is enough of a band not to have the stretch in it iyswim). The snugness also made me feel a bit "Tummy-y" which the 10 didn't. SO I did debate it but feel happier having gone skimming rather than squeezing Grin. also am 48, peri-menopausal and only likely to get wider

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 11/01/2020 11:08

Heh I know all about the widening waist! Fair enough, I just wanted to mention it in case you didn’t know.

I love a good leather skirt...I’m not even looking at the sales because I shouldn’t be spending. Sigh.

Love your purchases, enjoy!

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 11/01/2020 14:14

Hehe, I am also 48, and also bought myself a leather mini skirt, but in a size that means it “hangs” rather than sits. My teens have not screamed “midlife crisis outfit” at me yet, so that’s a result Hmm

I wore mine to party with a fitted polo/turtle neck that ended at the waist/top of the skirt.

Have you worn yours out yet? What is your best top to go with it?

I fear a fitted polo neck/turtleneck is a bit 90s Grin but not found anything better yet

Binglebong · 11/01/2020 14:24

Best pic is definitely with the jeans! You look fab.

The skirt is a far better length on you than the dress not at all jealous of your legs . Overall you've got some really nice options there.

ChopOrNot · 11/01/2020 14:58

@TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead Not worn it out yet (slouching around at home today so it is a Hush Harem pants and slippers kind of day.

I have a too many selection of v neck cashmere jumpers that looks quite good and my new top from grey Winser grey - here :www.winserlondon.com/sale/view-all/brigitte-scoop-neck-jumper looks really nice. I may also have ordered another cashmere jumper from them too. --opps www.winserlondon.com/cashmere-v-neck-jumper in the aqua. Not arrived yet. A really vibrant turquoise colour really suits my colouring. I have a feeling it maybe too pale, but thought it worth ordering to have a look.

As an owner of Hush harem pants, can you tell me if they'd fit a 5ft short arse or will they be stupidly long on me?

Hoppinggreen · 11/01/2020 15:34

I’m just over 5ft and Hush Harems are a bit long on me.plus I look awful in them, even though most people seem to like them
Hush Aimee joggers suit me much better

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/01/2020 18:09

I wear my fake leather mini with a turtleneck a lot - plus black tights and either ankle boots or trainers. I really like it.

The Hush harems and joggers are huge. I'm a 12/14 and need a small in them.

TooMinty · 11/01/2020 22:30

Thanks Hopping and Remus, sounds like they are not for me Sad

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/01/2020 23:16

Sorry - I meant huge width ways! I'm 5'2 and the Aimees and cropped harems are fine on me.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 12/01/2020 01:17

Yes, the hush harems are for tall people . I wear them and am 6ft Grin

Their joggers are way too small for me though, so they’d be good for smaller ladies

Jonb6 · 12/01/2020 01:26

May be you wear jeans a lot because you look good in them? Fab with the top too. Have you thought about black jeans for a different look?

TooMinty · 12/01/2020 09:01

Ah ok so joggers or cropped ok length wise. But they come up big on the waist measurement. Got it! Thanks.

Hoppinggreen · 12/01/2020 09:17

The Aimee joggers have a drawstring though so it doesn’t matter
I’m a 16 and I get a L in Hush but depending on the fit etc I could probably get away with a M

Apileofballyhoo · 12/01/2020 13:11

Hi OP, the shirt is gorgeous on you, I love it with the jeans (what jeans are they, please?) and I liked it with the skirt and tights, and the trousers - think it might be nice with black jeans too.

I've been on your threads before and love when you do another one! DD is getting to the age when she'll tell you what's good or not. Lucky you. DS is same age as yours and will say if something looks nice but is very very conservative about what Mammy wears, and likes it best if I wear oversized clothes because he still likes to come inside a big cardigan for a big hug.

Anyway really just came on to say you're gorgeous.

ChopOrNot · 12/01/2020 13:41

@TooMinty I have the S in the Harem pants. I am 5'3" so not much taller than you and they are fine. The way they are cuffed means they really could fit any height - maybe worth ordering and trying on. Order 2 pairs to get free delivery/returns and see how you do?

And @Apileofballyhoo thank you! I always worry people think I am a complete no-hope-fashion-loser with zero ability to decide on anything. Which I am. I kind of have zero interest in fashion until I need to go out, then the social anxiety kicks in a bit and I want to just be comfortably-blending-in with what I wear. If that make sense. But cannot work out what looks good without other's opinions due to my zero-fashion-radar.

Oh, and new leather skirt is having an outing this afternoon. Just to the cinema. But thought why save it for the pub. Pic (again a bit pants and the mirror-selfie) attached.

Not such an amazing dress. Or is it? Should I get the skirt?

ChopOrNot · 12/01/2020 13:47

Jeez....look at those calf muscles. Bloody calf muscles the bane of my life!

And forgot to say @Apileofballyhoo, jeans are ancient Next "Relaxed Skinny". If they still do them you need to go about 2 sizes down (these are a size 6) as the vanity sizes mixed with the 15-minutes-after-wearing stretch will make for a very baggy look otherwise.
