Not such an amazing dress. Or is it? Should I get the skirt?

Thanks to @posterRemusLupinsBiggestGroupie amazing dress thread, and a birthday meal out where my standby Hush Tara dress made me feel dull rather than special, I have decided I need a new "going out" outfit. So the odd trip for a meal/cocktails/the pub with friends which require more than jeans and a jumper (my normal wear) but nothing totally smart.

Stuff has arrived and I have been trying on - but I go style-blind when looking in the mirror- especially if outside of my comfort zone jeans and a jumper

So please will you cast your much better eyes over the attached. Ignoring the fluffy hair and duff photo abilities..

@Bubbinsmakesthree - yep. Agree. I often feel that with my curls (and grey) around my face then I have to be really careful with my clothes. Too much pattern/flouncy shite and yep...too much going on. I tend to play it safe with non-patterns mostly.

Top tucked into skirt looks great (but not with thick tights). Love your gorgeous hair too.

ChopOrNot · 09/01/2020 16:22

Skirt is an oasis one. But I got it from Next (easy delivery etc) Link here: www2.next.co.uk/style/st494724#230597

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie got me thinking of the idea to be honest.

DD (13yo, slim, leggy) just tried the dress on and it looked better on her. But still not great. I cannot even begin to tell you what DS (11 yo v small for his age) look like when he put it on. Grin GrinGrinGrin.

I think there is a reason this one was in the sale.....

None of those outfits are amazing.
That dress is left in the sale for a reason - loads in our All Saints. I love All Saints but they sometimes go a bit Per Una.
Send it all back.

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 17:29

Of course it all depends on my style whether my opinion counts. I could be sitting here in a Juicy tracksuit.

MayFayner · 09/01/2020 17:39

Another one saying that tucked-in is great on you 👍

Ohyesiam · 09/01/2020 17:39

But the thing is, even when I don’t like the clothes, you look good in them. You look edgy and self contained.
I like the skirt and the trousers best.

CountFosco · 09/01/2020 18:14

Skirt and shirt tucked in is the best but pleather trousers are good as well. I like the loose top half of the dress but agrees it's too pouffy and think it should be a maxi not a mini.

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 18:26

These threads really show how diverse opinions are!

I really dislike the tucked in look - feels so frumpy! However I suspect my version of edgy is different to others who again won't match anyone else.

Is there a RL friend whose style you like that you could ask?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 09/01/2020 18:27

@Noeuf they're not that diverse because you're the only one who doesn't like it Grin

frankincenseandmur · 09/01/2020 18:28

I prefer tucked in the trousers

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 18:33

@GiveHerHellFromUs
That is very true. I'm diverse and you lot are normal Grin

sclough · 09/01/2020 18:35

Personally I think the skirt is too short. Trousers tucked in with chunky long gold necklace. No to the dress.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 09/01/2020 18:38

@Noeuf I wouldn't go as far as to say normal
Grin

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 18:53

@GiveHerHellFromUs

We shall add an -ish

EarringsandLipstick · 09/01/2020 19:04

Another one liking the tucked in look, both skirt & trousers but don't think bare legs / neutral tights work. I know what you mean re being 'too black' but I just don't think bare legs & leather are flattering (to anyone except maybe Kate Moss)

ChopOrNot · 09/01/2020 19:21

Kind of agree with @Noeuf in a way - if I could be bothered I could find something better - but not sure I can be bothered. I want to look nice, with an outfit that will do pub/cocktails/nice-ish restaurant without much thought. I hate shopping and hate having to decide what to buy/suits me.

So, my plan thus far - am sending back the dress (no surprise there) but am keeping the All Saints shirt. The shirt may not be amazing but it is lovely - I feel good in it, it makes me look like I have put an effort into my outfit (not just with a few sparkly bits on the material, but the sheer and drapy feel are great too). In the addition, slippers and all, I tried the shirt on with blue jeans...and that works too. Though may have to change shoes Grin

Not doing pleather trousers - just don't feel comfortable in them at all. Had already decided this when DH came in and kind of winced when he saw them and admitted he hates pleather or leather trousers on anyone Grin.

I am going to wait for the smaller leather skirt to arrive tomorrow and try it on with a few other tops. If I can get more than one outfit from it I may keep the skirt too. not just to sniff it.

Not such an amazing dress. Or is it? Should I get the skirt?

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 19:59

Thank god you're losing the pleather trousers.

ChopOrNot · 09/01/2020 20:16

@Noeuf Grin. Black sausage skins sprung to mind. DD and DS laughed when they saw me in them. I have quite muscular legs (runner) and this can sometimes be problematic with skinny trousers - just I have so much calf muscles hanging around!

DD likes the shirt and wants to borrow it when she has some boobs to fill it out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2020 20:26

Glad to be of service. Grin

I LOVE the leather mini skirt with the black tights and shirt (but I like all black. In the summer, I reckon you could get away with the skirt with bare legs but right now, I think it needs the black tights.

The AllSaints dress isn't quite working, but it's the fault of the dress, not you. I just think it looks a bit cheap, and it's still £££.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2020 20:27

Oh and I detest leather trousers - never seen them looking nice on anybody.

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 21:03

Pleather trousers are to edgy what signs saying 'you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps' are to wacky

Ifixbrokenthings · 09/01/2020 21:29

The skirt combo is lovely although I didn't mind thr pleather trousers option either. Your hair is just fantastic!

EarringsandLipstick · 10/01/2020 07:22

Your last photo is gorgeous. That outfit so cool & you look amazing 💃🏻
