I remember people wearing Addias Trainers and they were trendy and popular.

Burn marks on your neck from trying to perfect the Farrah Fawcett Majors flick with your curling tongs.

CallarMorvern · 04/01/2020 20:48

Ra-ra skirts, short denim skirts with frilly blouses, Benetton sweatshirts.

Was full on Madonna for a while, Constance Carol dodgy purple lipstick, white stilletos, White fishnets, big earrings 🙄
Also had fabulous cream suede boots with dangly feathers and beads from Freeman Hardy Willis.
Curly perms.
Pink Kicker boots.

TeaAddict235 · 04/01/2020 20:54

@ladybee28 'Cutting a hole in the crotch of a pair of tights and putting your head through it and your arms in the legs'

WTF??? When and where was that? Gotta know! That sounds legendary! Bra? No bra? Spagetti top? Paired with tight jeans and....?

Shelley's bags
DM shoes
Stupid cats collar
Topshop jeans with a button on the rear pockets
Kookai shopping bags
Jellies sandals (if you could sneak them in)

dreamerlemur · 04/01/2020 21:13

@CallarMorvern
Freeman Hardy Willis and Constance Carol - what a blast from the past !!
Oh yes the boots with feathers and beads 🤔of their time !

FancyAMincePie · 04/01/2020 21:21

Also crimped hair

Chochito · 04/01/2020 21:27

Dying one's hair "period red"

Wearing an army surplus jacket with ban the bomb signs drawn on with marker

Or wearing a petrol blue bomber jacket with fluorescent yellow lining

Having a record bag as one's school bag

Carrying one's P.E. kit in a Jane Norman carrier bag

Wearing an outsized fake designer sweatshirt from a market on top of one's school uniform (e.g. Tommy HiFLiger)

Wearing bright white Reebok classics instead of school shoes and feigning a mysterious "bad foot" or "bad ankle" (ah...the days before teachers could email parents to check)

Wearing invisible, or no, socks

Wearing necklaces with ban the bomb symbols, or one's star sign, or random green beads, on black threads

Mood rings

Timeforatincture · 04/01/2020 21:28

In the early 80's Anello and Davide character shoes were the mutt's nuts at our school. I thought I had nothing else to wish for in life when I picked up a pair in my size in a charity shop.

Chochito · 04/01/2020 21:29

Platform shoes, with rubber platforms, as school shoes (from Dolcis)

Bleaching the strand of hair closest to your face on each side

Sun-In

Brightly coloured hair mascara

Gammeldragz · 04/01/2020 21:46

Those kappa trackies with poppers all up the sides.
Trousers with skirts built in for school uniform!

lotusbell · 04/01/2020 22:37

Head bags!

Ritascornershop · 04/01/2020 22:47

Little cotton Mary Janes from China for shoes
Carpenter jeans (we called them that, not sure what they’re called now)
black body suits with mohair cardigans over top

This was cool for my arty crowd, it was much more structured and preppy for the sporty kids.

AgeLikeWine · 04/01/2020 22:52

These beauties. They were expensive, so not everyone could afford a pair, and they became a real status symbol. I certainly couldn’t afford them!

They still look quite cool!

JaceLancs · 04/01/2020 23:09

Platform shoes
Stripy socks
Simon shirts
Tartan a la bay city rollers style

Then corduroy
Plum colours
Hacking jackets
Ties for girls
Granny shoes

Am sure you can guess my age!

Tinyandpetite · 05/01/2020 00:10

Kickers shoes, adidas poppers, long black skirts with trainers, kickers sweatshirts

Flurgle · 05/01/2020 00:20

Polyvelts
With over the knee socks, thick ones. You had to put a bit of elastic round the top to keep them up. Worn with a straight skirt with a split up the back.
Harrington jackets
A hairstyle where the fringe was cut over your ears but the back was longer and like a bob.
I was not cool at all. Only had the socks.

Cattenberg · 05/01/2020 00:21

Doc Martens
Navy sweatshirts with sports logos
Jeans
Speckled skinny rib jumpers
River Island carrier bags
Pendant on a thin black cord

It was actually quite boring. On non-uniform days, our school was a sea of blue, with hints of black and grey.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/01/2020 00:31

Late 70s. Gypsy skirts with a broderie anglaise underskirt. The gypsy skirt had to be artfully tucked up to show the underskirt. Worn with an off the shoulder top.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 05/01/2020 02:57

Most of the stuff has already been mentioned by previous posters but I’ve got a few to add.

-Skin tight jeans with baby faces printed on them,
-Pastel coloured skinny jeans,
-Crushed velvet - dresses and tops mainly, usually red or purple in colour.
-Cricket jumpers
-Record bags
-wearing multiple scrunches in your hair (scraped back high pony tail with big puffy fringe or face framing strands left out.)
-brown lipstick
-scrunchie socks, usually worn on top of trousers - bonus points for name brand like Nike and extra bonus points if they were super long so you got more scrunch showing.

  • gold chains with weird looking clown doll on them that had movable arms and legs
  • gold name chains
  • holographic stuff.

I was never trendy in school. I wanted to be for the first couple of years but my mum wouldn’t buy me any of the ‘cool’ things. Then I got into metal music and turned all alternate/goth/nu-metal. I was the only one in school for a while so stuck out like a sore thumb. Our secondary school was non uniform (introduced uniform my last year) so what you wore was very important for your social status. I wore massive baggy jeans, band T-shirt’s or vest tops, lots of black mesh/lace and velvet stuff. I desperately wanted a floor length black leather jacket (but never got one).

pollywobble · 05/01/2020 03:42

Mid 70s
Northern Soul type Oxford bags, long skirts with 4 button waist bands and fitted shirts with platform shoes
Hippyish flared jeans with different material set into the flares and cheese cloth tops with platforms. Butterfly hair slides made out of bent bamboo layers.

letsgomaths · 05/01/2020 08:13

@Chochito Oh yes, there were certainly a few "dazzling white Reeboks instead of school shoes" when I was at school.

Yes also to the no socks, especially with Dunlop Greenflash, Kickers, Reebok Classic, or Air Max. I'm sure in the 90's people were often really sockless, before invisible socks were popular. In my first year at uni, the "uniform" for going around the hall of residence was trainers on bare feet, especially at breakfast (bare feet were forbidden in the dining room): not many people wore slippers because we had to cross a grassy courtyard. Nowadays they'd all be in sliders and socks.

Does anyone remember Converse sliders, as worn by Meghan Markle as a teenager? They were really popular in the late 90s, but as rare as hens' teeth now, at least in the same style.

Velvet flares, loons, Levis. Flared and long enough to touch the ground
Tie dyed grandad shirts, cheesecloth blouses with trailing sleeves, embroidered tunics with bell sleeves.
Afghan coats, tapestry coats with hoods, fur or fake fur coats.
Long flowing cheesecloth dresses and skirts, frilled: Indian cotton dresses smocks and skirts, all patterned. Love the smell of Indian cotton.
Fringed shawls or old table cloths, old tie dyed nightdresses, peignoirs and long petticoats from jumble sales, anything eastern or exotic, like Moroccan djellabas, shalwar kamizes, Afghan dresses, cloaks, stoles, ball gowns..
Patchwork, beads, Indian silver, headbands, silk scarves, loads of big rings and dozens of bracelets and leather wrist bands
Leather sandals, sometimes embroidered, desert boots, painted gym shoes, coloured leather boots.
I've enjoyed this trip down memory lane! Smile
