We entered secondary school wearing either those stacked Kicker platforms with thigh high socks, or the Shelly platform trainers, cartoon ties instead of school ones, fitted mini skirts, pvc smart jackets, or pvc puffers and a ton of gold jewellery 🤣 As we got older we morphed into the looks that alot of "roadman" got their look from today. We wore the Avirex jackets (they had to be leather and from a reputable shop lol), Moschino jeans, Adidas tracksuits, Nike TNs, Air Max or Timbs. The good old days!

You had to carry a River Island bag around first and foremost and drench yourself in impulse.

Otherwise
Kickers/Pod shoes
A flick in your hair set rock solid with hairspray
Kappa tracksuit
Anything from Morgan/Jane Morgan/Miss Selfridge/Topshop

Ra Ra skirt I really wanted and never had

moonsmarshmellow · 04/01/2020 17:55

I was in secondary school early-mid 2000’s
Dolly shoes and ballet pumps were more popular than trainers as casual shoes, either teamed with skinny jeans or black leggings and a denim skirt.

Cardigans were a lot more popular as well.
Everyone’s school bag were those rubbish fabric patterned ‘shopper’ bags that cost a fiver from Topshop or H&M

Ugg boots (and all their variations!)
Jane Norman bags used as PE bags!

Quite bold ‘statement’ jewellery from Topshop/Ms Selfridge and similar places was popular. I remember everyone having the same big chunky fake pearl necklace.
I also remember a black and white striped jumper from Topshop that virtually everybody had.
99% of girls had side partings and those very feathered angular ‘side fringes’ and very layered hair.

myidentitymycrisis · 04/01/2020 17:55

@DrCoconut
you are the first person i have heard say 'grebo' since the 80's, i love it!

myidentitymycrisis · 04/01/2020 18:02

Mooserp · 04/01/2020 18:04

At secondary school there was a brief trend of wearing fluo ankle socks over tights, with court shoes.

Baggy t shirts with a belt worn low on the hips.

Canvas schoolbags which we would write/draw all over

myidentitymycrisis · 04/01/2020 18:05

'badminton' and 'squash' trainers, think the brand was hi tech

Deecaff · 04/01/2020 19:28

Still have hi tech squash trainers , didn't realise they were ever trendy.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2020 20:07

It was cool in my school to use the Kickers bag as a bag, or use an army surplus bag with the names of your favourite bands written all over it.

If you had more than one Kickers tag on your shoes, you were obviously cool enough to own more than one pair.

The cool girls at school had loads of clothes. Funny to find out when you were older that their parents actually weren't minted.

Curly hair was in, and long curly perms were in, but if you had naturally curly hair that was a big plus. Some had short hair with root perms. Some girls would use curling tongs or heated rollers every morning.

Boys had spiked hair with gel in in it. One or two had a rat tail. A streak was a trend too.

I wasn't cool at all but would occasionally have something that someone would ask me where I got it from, and then they turned up with an identical thing.
These things were usually sourced on trips to the nearest cities in the North West. Liverpool was my favourite.

SpeckledyHen · 04/01/2020 20:18

Loons
Anything from Biba

BestIsWest · 04/01/2020 20:20

Desert boots, basket weave heeled wedges, preferably in tan. Bomber jackets, blanket coats. Perms. Tiered skirts with lace round the bottom in flowered cotton prints. Brown. Corduroy.

BestIsWest · 04/01/2020 20:21

Oh, and Dunlop green flash tennis shoes.

BestIsWest · 04/01/2020 20:23

BackForGood 1974!

wanderings · 04/01/2020 20:29

Reebok Classics; especially without socks.

Palladium shoes were also popular.

Deecaff · 04/01/2020 20:30

Yes perms were a big thing. I never had one but discovered hair mousse in 6th form and could then transform my wavyish hair into permed looking hair.

Best day ever would be someone asking me if I'd had a perm.
