What specs are 'in' (but not too in!)

Just that really! The arm on my specs snapped clean off yesterday and I'm now in a panic to get a new pair. Went in this morning and picked a couple of pairs I liked which were fairly similar to my old ones, which were a bigger style in a thin plastic frame, purple tortoishell. Went back later with my mum (who usually has better taste than me) for a second opinion and she didn't like them at all, and is steering me at some thin gold metal ones, fairly round. Now I'm a 37yo mum of two. I'm not cool by any stretch, but do like to have up to date specs. But I'm concerned whether thin gold metal fairly round ones are too trendy for me. Dh however thinks they're old fashioned. So who is right? Where is the mum fashion line at?

I need new glasses too. Interested in the responses to this.

Miseryisabutterfly · 21/12/2019 17:07

Ace & Tate. Although I find some a bit comical.

Livedandlearned · 21/12/2019 17:07

I've seen a lot of people wearing these https://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/glasses/ted-baker-lyla/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAovfvBRCRARIsADEmbRI6TDkm69j8zhsw9fmWOfjsI--Oj6Q3xPC31q9XhbbBhCUtVdzvmcaAtXmEALwwcB&prca=PRCA50054220&istItemId=iwwatlxtl&gclsrc=aw.ds&istBid=tztx&istFeedId=4882f48e-ed8c-434b-be7c-b1214a7cb7e8&istCompanyId=b6730c48-ca0f-4341-9ce2-c90b6a53ec93&aspect=front

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 17:13

Buy what you like and you feel comfortable in and don't worry about what any one else thinks.

Fairylea · 21/12/2019 17:25

I would say metal ones are out. Dd aged 17 wouldn’t be seen dead in anything less than full geek type plastic nhs style ones but I think there’s a middle ground!

I am 39 and got these a week ago -

I really love them and I like to think of myself as reasonably with it. But who knows. Someone may come along and say they’re hideous! Grin

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 17:44

To be fair @fairy if your Dd liked them I probably wouldn't wear them on the basis they're for 17 year olds. Anything vaguely cat eye just does not work for me unfortunately. I find glasses so difficult...

I have these

Mumof1andacat · 21/12/2019 18:21

Ones that suit your face shape

Richlyfruited · 21/12/2019 18:57

Ooh love those Fairylea

Sorry to be boring but as a full time glasses wearer it's so important to pick ones that are comfy!! I realised after years of trying I can't wear the ones with nose pads no matter how much I love the frames.

askmeagainin5 · 21/12/2019 19:01

I have to disagree and say that metal is in! All of the women I know who dress ‘cool’ are wearing round, metal pairs. That being said, I would 100% opt for what looks good on your face. I never notice whether people have trendy glasses on or not, but I probably would if they didn’t suit you.

adhdme2019 · 21/12/2019 19:06

Metal is in.

Plastic maybe on its way out trend wise but surely most people wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing the metal ones so probably not.

Fairylea · 21/12/2019 19:53

You see this is where I struggle using my 17 year old dd as a fashion barometer Grin Maybe what’s in for 17 year olds isn’t suitable for nearly 40 year old me... hmm. I’m curious that a couple of people have said metal is in in this regard as I know none of dds crowd would wear metal. But who knows, different age groups and all that! Grin

XingMing · 21/12/2019 20:03

Mine are mostly resin, but have metal elements and have won tons of compliments. I have found that I need to match the metal bits to earrings and jewellery. I can't find a picture but the frames are Paul & Joe and they are not the most expensive. HTH.

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 20:20

@fairylee now I struggle with this because I totally want to go screw that, wear what you like, age is just a number! But then clearly I don't actually do that or I wouldn't be asking this question 🙈 I think maybe I am not worried about age, I'm perhaps worried I'll look like a cool hip millennial and real ones will know I'm not?! Because I see loads of real cool hip millenials on the school run, playgroup and at the office that would call me out on this, obv... 🙈

I need some new ones asap. I have a high prescription and always get thinnest lenses, but wonder what style is in but also small enough to avoid too much thickness. I can't do metal due to lens thickness. I'm thinking black or nude (I'm blondish).

BloomedAgain · 21/12/2019 20:36

@Indecisivelurcher what kind of thing do you like? Do you like to contrast/match faceshape.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2019 20:40

18yo Dd has clear, big Perspex/plastic ones.

I see a lot of her similar age friends with the metal, big round ones.

I have an awfully high prescription so just have to get what I’m told will fit my lenses even when thinned. I had the choice of 2 frames in the whole shop last time! Got to be plastic and fairly small frames.

I think your current ones suit you.

fiorentina · 21/12/2019 20:47

I think whilst plastic frames are fashionable it’s moving towards metal frames again. If they suit you and are comfortable go for it..

stripeypillowcase · 21/12/2019 20:47

imo they look great. the shape suits the shape of your face very well.
saddle less frames are everywhere nowadays and tbh I prefer them, they leave less of a mark on the nose.
