And that’s how PR is done well.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 16/12/2019 22:21

I liked Kate’s red dress as well, it really reminded me of these two that Diana wore back on the day.

Kerrrrist those two Diana dresses are horrors! The 80s were a tricky decade Grin

AppleKatie · 16/12/2019 22:44

It’s the way they hang in the skirt section. Looks cheap to the modern eye and it definitely wasn’t!

BigGreenOlives · 16/12/2019 22:48

That pink dress makes the POW look very slight, I wonder whether that was when she was very unwell.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 16/12/2019 22:48

I really enjoyed the programme. I thought Mary Berry was just so warm and interested in everyone and everything. What an amazing lady she is.
I was interested to know more about the charities and thought they both came across well . William in particular seemed genuinely relaxed and really interested. Kate seemed tense and a bit self conscious I thought but genuinely involved. I don’t think she has much to offer conversationally beyond anecdotes about her children though. Her life is really quite limited and her experience of life very confined which must make it difficult to relate to the experiences some of those people had gone through.
They both care and are trying hard. I agree their PR team are doing a great job.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 16/12/2019 22:49

Where do we find the recipes?!

FaithHowellsYellowCoat · 16/12/2019 22:51

Yes they’re coming across really well. I have always admired them for the way they’re bringing up their kids - those pictures at the polo where they’re hanging out in the back of their car playing with each other. I know they don’t have a normal life but that looked so “normal”. So many celebrities/public figures shove their kids in the spotlight or make money from them and I’m sorry but I really judge it.

Gooseysgirl · 16/12/2019 23:02

Just watched the Mary Berry programme on catch up, an absolute master stroke in PR for the Cambridges - Harry and Meghan take note!!!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 16/12/2019 23:17

The pink one looks dated to modern eyes now due to the cut etc I agree but the basic premise of the dress is the same, pattered, high neck, pussycat bow, etc, Kate is just wearing the current version of that style, I think there were far more 80’s horrors Diana wore than the two I pictured which I think were quite tame for the period.

I just watched the program on YouTube and agree that it was very well done. In particular, I was impressed with William. I get the impression that there is a much greater depth in him than sometimes comes across. He really appeared genuinely to connect with the people in the homeless shelter. Catherine did very well too, but I have to admit that sometimes I had trouble understanding her speech. She looked fantastic, of course, and I agree that the red dress looks better in movement then it does in still photos.

The absolute star, though, is Mary Berry. She is truly a national treasure.

itswinetime · 17/12/2019 05:58

Just caught up on the show to! It was indeed a master stroke. It was in a similar vein to the Charles documentaries form earlier in the year but the addition of Mary Berry made it that much less obvious it was a very clever idea.

I agree William seems to come across better when he is interacting with people. Kate's outfits do seem to look better in person/movement but I still don't think the high collared, long sleeved midi dress normally heavily patterned is a good look. But that's more about my taste than anything else.

GlamGiraffe · 17/12/2019 06:12

Gosh wasn't the programme great. I really enjoyed it. Even DS17 was interested. We both thought they were so normal he commented how very like us she really is.
Agreed the blue seersucker(?) Dress which I detested in photos actually looked good in action so to speak. It made me laugh how competitive you could see they really actually are underneath with the roulade rolling, I suppose they're rather sporty so It would make sense. I wonder if the race to do the washing up so competitively? 😉 I can quite imagine Will in a pair of pink marrigolds😂

WineOrGinOrBoth · 17/12/2019 06:32

I know it’s stupid but I actually think less of the Rose Hanbyry rumours - Kate seemed so natural with William. It would take a lot to forgive an affair & there were no flickers that I saw. Either that or she’s a brilliant actress.

itswinetime · 17/12/2019 06:40

That's why it was so cleverly done they showed of charities ✅ they came across like down to earth normal people ✅ Squashed the rumours without saying a word on then ✅. It was a master class in PR. And this isn't me criticising it's the name of the game and well done them for doing it so well. I do find it strange though that a family that can do something like pr so well can also do it so badly but I guess that's what happens when everything is handled separately.

Northernlurker · 17/12/2019 07:17

I thought it was brilliant. Very well put together with Mary taking the lead but the personalities of both of the D&DOC came through and you got a sense of them working with the charities long term. I never gave the affair rumours any credence anyway but agree seeing the dynamics between them you didn't get any hint of issues, just a sense of two people who are absolutely on the same page. I bet the Queen watched it with a gin.

Northernlurker · 17/12/2019 07:30

And the bit where Mary shoved the duchess out of the way to get back to the roulade was hilarious.

queenofarles · 17/12/2019 07:38

I really liked it. William seamed genuinely interested. His talk with The recovered alcoholic young woman was very touching. Liked how he gave credit to Kate for her mental health work.
I agree it’s good PR for them and their work, but it really is more about the charities.

Speaking of fashion , like the Alessandra dress more now I’ve seen it. Really beautiful !

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/12/2019 07:50

I love seeing the Cambridge's being competitive. I think that they have decided to have a public relationship and a private relationship. That way they don't see lots of affection on a day to day basis, however, a bit of competition brings out so much in both of them, they look really like they enjoy being with each other.

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/12/2019 07:52

@itswinetime re the PR it also helps that the media weren't out to tear into them from the moment the programme was announced. And yes, it does squash the rumours but that might've been one of the aims anyway! But I used to work in PR so maybe I'm just cynical...

They both came across very well, especially William, which I wasn't expecting. It's clear he cares very much about carrying on the work his mother did but it was nice to hear him talk about both his parents with equal regard.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/12/2019 07:52

I really enjoyed it. William seems to have a great sense of humour. He always did when he was younger, but it’s nice to see it’s still there.

I bet Catherine isn’t so stuffy when she’s at home in her jeans with the children making pizzas.

Encyclo · 17/12/2019 07:57

@QueenOfTheAndals it also helps that the media weren't out to tear into them from the moment the programme was announced

True. You just know how the DM would've approached this. As it stands they posted one article about the show and its garnered 100ish comments.

hopeishere · 17/12/2019 07:59

I loved it - including the recipes!! William came across very well. Kate sounds like she's not taking a deep enough breath before talking so it's comes out a bit squeaky but that might be nerves. They both seem genuinely interested in what they're doing and talking to people.

A PR triumph!

itswinetime · 17/12/2019 07:59

I'm sure squashing the rumours was part of the point the point of the show that's one of the reasons I thought it was so well done. The achieved everything they wanted and we have a left feeling positive. In my opinion all royal documentaries have a point it's just some are a lot better done than others I think this was a particularly we done one 🤷🏻‍♀️ I agree it helps that the press aren't gunning for them at the moment.

RomaineCalm · 17/12/2019 08:50

I watched it last night and thought it was really well done.

Lovely to see Kate and William looking so relaxed together and the genuine warmth that they have for the charities that they support.

It seems that so often the Royals are pictured on 'walkabout' - shaking hands, a brief chat and then move on - this felt that it was very much more personal and gave the impression that they want to use their position to make a difference.

And the red dress looked a lot better than in the photos!
