I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

But IRL no one really looks more than 5 years younger than their age, no matter what they say on here

One of my friends - in her 40s - looks ridiculously young. It' can be problem for her at work

Aridane · 24/11/2019 19:03

At work, on one of those team building things we had to put ourselves in age order without speaking

Words fail me

ZenNudist · 24/11/2019 19:06

Its genetic. All the women in my family have looked young.

I have smoked and drank a lot in my youth.

I stay out of the sun as Im very fair but burnt as a child and in my 20s.

I dont drink caffeine and gulp downlitres of herbal tea. Thats a plus.

I have a stressful job and I'm a bit shouty.

I sleep badly.

My diet is not great as I am always eating high fat and sugar. Reckon I must be unhealthy on the inside.

After seeing all that maybe people are just being nice when they seem surprised at my age. I reckon 40+ you can look young for a while and then suddenly look awful.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/11/2019 19:07

Yes, because on Tinder people put on photos that entirely correlate to how they look.

yellowallpaper · 24/11/2019 19:09

Genetics I think. Hating sunbathing helps, otherwise sun block! Keeping a steady weight as putting on weight is ageing as it stretches the skin and causes wrinkles. Healthy diet and exercise. Good skincare regime, but nothing extreme. Tons of moisturiser. Sunglasses to avoid squinting in the sun. Sun block on hands if you like gardening. Young outlook, and stop moaning.

yellowallpaper · 24/11/2019 19:10

100% no smoking!

ZenNudist · 24/11/2019 19:12

I was mistaken for 30 last week. Im 41. Person could be stupid. Also its been a real struggle at work. I reference my 20 years of experience a lot and people perk up and give me more respect then.

CornedBeef451 · 24/11/2019 19:13

Being a bit fat.

mindproject · 24/11/2019 19:14

I'm 47. I got asked for ID recently, so I know I look a bit younger, realistically I think I look 35.

I have terrible hair, but really good skin, no wrinkles. I also look fairly happy most of the time, because I generally am. I think I would look older if I lost weight, I'm size 12.

I eat lots of vegetables, I'm vegan, I don't drink or smoke. On the down side I don't drink much water or get much sleep.

mindproject · 24/11/2019 19:15

Also, I've always had a baby face with slightly chubby cheeks and big eyes. I think that helps.

rosesandcashmere · 24/11/2019 19:16

Genetics and botox.

WhizzingFizzbee · 24/11/2019 19:18

I’m 30 but someone at work the other day thought I’d just left school!

I think it’s mainly genetics but I have a good skincare regime, wear SPF and lucky for me am not keen on alcohol so I hardly drink. Diet and water intake not so great.

Whiteroverbaby · 24/11/2019 19:18

BOTOX

8Iris8 · 24/11/2019 19:18

It’s genetics for sure. People think I’m in my mid-late twenties, so 15 years younger than I am. I spent my youth and young adulthood smoking, drinking and spending a lot of time in hot countries with no sunscreen. I am super healthy now, drink lots of water and lead a pretty austere lifestyle these days, but based on my past behaviour I should look my age and then some! I am 1/4 non white and I think being a bit mixed race helps too with looking younger for some reason.

Delatron · 24/11/2019 19:20

I do think fair Celtic types (like me) with freckles tend to age worse unfortunately...! But that goes back to genetics too.

Delatron · 24/11/2019 19:22

But up until late 30s I was told I looked 10 years younger. It tends to catch up with you around 42/43 so if you are only 30 you’re a long way off.

RockinHippy · 24/11/2019 19:22

Genetics, using a good moisturiser since I was 19 & having kids very late. That bit alone usually knocks 10 years off what people presume us to be

bohemia14 · 24/11/2019 19:23

I'm in my 50s. Up until recently I looked much younger than my age but it's starting to catch up with me and when I look at my friends of the same age they do look in their 50s. I think the menopause does have a big toll on the body and you look older, and that's normal and ok.

My skin is good as I've always had oily skin. I'm also a bit overweight, not much, and I think that helps too when it comes to the face. I've had Botox, not too much, just for frown lines, twice a year since I was 40. There is no face in the world that I'd want to have that would make me give up wine. You can look great but you're still ageing and you might as well enjoy it!

Lots of water, exercise and sleep helps. But some of it is luck.....

I am 55 and people are surprised.
I have worn factor 50 sunscreen everyday - summer and winter since my early 20’s - I think that makes a big difference.

PandasandRabbit · 24/11/2019 19:31

People always think I'm a lot younger than I am - I went swimming a few years back mid 40s and one woman so couldn't believe my age she did a survey of everyone in the pool and the average guess was 24. I would guess its largely genetics, never wear make-up, have a fringe. I don't drink or smoke. Normal diet. Fairly thin. Can't dye hair as allergic but stayed natural colour much longer than average and only the odd grey hair which I cut out. I used to hate it when younger. Used to get chatted up by men looking for under aged girls who would then say I thought you would be about 12 - yuck. DH hates getting called my Dad. Now quite happy to look younger but not sure how long it will last as hair is going and can't dye it.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/11/2019 19:31

I look 45, I'm very happy to look 45, I really dont understand the desire to look younger, why can't you look like a brilliant and amazing 80 year old, or a competent, mother of young children 30 year old, or a dewy, life is before me, 19 year-old.

I am 45, I LOOK 45, and I'm thrilled as fuck with that. Venerating certain ages is madness. We all roll down the years if we're lucky. Be pleased with your age, because it's the only time you're ever going to be that age. Enjoy it, if you're in good health all ages have their pleasures and benefits.

Whats your secret if you regularly get told you look younger than your age
BennyTheBall · 24/11/2019 19:32

SPF all year round.

Dermalogica skin care.

Stay slim.

Dye hair - no greys. I have a couple of friends (late 40s) that have embraced the grey. They look OLD.

Skilled botox.

FreddyFazbear · 24/11/2019 19:37

Have children when you're really old! I had my youngest at 45 and, while I'm pretty confident I don't look 10 years younger (I'm 52 now) everyone just assumes I'm younger when they look at DS. I haven't been mistaken for his granny yet!

drspouse · 24/11/2019 19:41

Genetics, and having my children REALLY late so nobody can believe I'm in my 50s with a DC in Y1.
