^ completely agree @BertrandRussell. We all know the jewels are there. They aren't being flogged off for charity or to help people. So we may as well get to see them!

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 12:35

Yes, everyone KNOWS they are rich bertrand, but, that's different to the 'optics', (to borrow a app's word), of seeing them out and about dripping in diamonds. As with most fashion, it's an expression of the society we inhabit at any given time, not purely personal. Especially when you're in the public eye. Even if they had a huge closet of furs, (they probably do), I doubt they'd wear them much nowadays.

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 12:36

And don't misunderstand me; I don't think the SHOULD hide the bling. I'm just explaining why I think they might be hiding it a bit.

itswinetime · 20/11/2019 12:48

But they will splash thousands on a new a gown that is pretty much identical to one they already own-not just Kate the Queen and Camilla also have a very set style but Kate is possibly the worst offender for that. But wearing jewellery they have owned for years is bad.

I think your right it's all about the optics. They think walking around dripping in diamonds looks bad but personally I would think better of them rewearing some more dresses and freshening it up with some bling than a whole new outfit and no sparkles!

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 12:52

Exactly @itswinetime! That slightly more austere look, probably cost many times more than anything that is currently in my wardrobe. It's just an illusion. (Now I have the song Just An Illusion in my head Halloween Hmm).

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 12:59

And YY, it would be a lot cheaper for them to reward an old dress and whip out the old bling than to buy a new outfit. But people can be very thick headed and do not see this, but would see if the royals were dressed head to toe in diamonds, even though we all know they already have them, so are technically free.

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 12:59

*rewear

IfWishesWereFishes · 20/11/2019 13:14

They could probably sell of 90% of the jewellery and art they have that go unused and give the proceeds as a one-time gift to the nation that would open schools and hospitals, maintain public spaces, or improve infrastructure.

They'd be heroes. Instead...they buy identikit clothes to wear once and put into storage month after month after month. What a waste of the power they could have, if only they chose to use it.

JaimeBronde · 20/11/2019 14:12

I too would prefer it if they rewore more of their old clothes & 'blinged' those outfits up by wearing the fabulous family jewellery.
Perhaps we should start a campaign
'Less Frocks, More Rocks'
What do we want 'MORE ROCKS'

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 20/11/2019 14:27

'Less Frocks, More Rocks'

Yes! As someone who is primarily here for the jewellery I support this wholeheartedly 👑

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/11/2019 14:37

Well there's the title for the next thread!

I do understand that. It’s just for me that it’s worse optics - more patronising, if you like- to pretend that we don’t know they’ve got insane amounts of money. I’d like to see them rewearing more stuff from an environmental point of view, but I don’t think that stuff should be H&M and Accessorise. Because it’s only to try to present an image of austerity which we all know is false. Show us pretty things. That’s what you’re there for!

Horsemad · 20/11/2019 15:36

Wow, 72 years married - some people don't even live that long! 😲

I noticed this when I Googled earlier.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 20/11/2019 15:38

I agree Bertrand.

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 15:59

@bertrandrussell

You find it patronising and technically, they probably are being patronising. However, considering what some people believe about MM, based purely on what they are told by what passes for a newspaper in this country and their own prejudices, it really isn't that much of a leap to imagine how some of the general public would respond to seeing the DoC parading around in valuable jewels, while others from her generation struggle to feed their children. It would be perceived worse than a new frock by some, as it is so obvious, visually. I also think people would perceive a more lavish looking gown as worse and more wasteful / spendy, even if it cost the same.

The RF are wrong to patronise, but I see why they do it.

JaimeBronde · 20/11/2019 16:02

Thank you Queen.

Talking of rocks, Philip is certainly HMQ's rock.
I suppose after 72 years of marriage & 80 years of knowing one another, they're probably telepathic & don't need to spend every single minute together.
I wonder if it's that same feeling that you have with your children. E.g DD may be at school, at a friends down the road, on holiday with friends hundreds of miles away or simply upstairs in her room but it always feels that she's sat right next to me wherever she may be in the world.
It's like I can feel her in my heart.

JaimeBronde · 20/11/2019 16:04

I'm a soppy old thing at times 😂

AdaColeman · 20/11/2019 16:23

I think there is a policy within The Firm at the moment, to present an "austerity" look. Or if not exactly austerity, certainly to try to create the impression that they are "just like us".

This is why Kate and others are suddenly wearing earrings from John Lewis and similar High Street outlets. It's so that the huddled masses will rush out to buy those earrings, and thus have an invested emotional link with the young royals.

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/11/2019 16:54

Maxima sighting! Outfit is nothing out of the ordinary but she always looks like she's having a great time, as do the people she meets. When she came to London last year even the Duke of Kent was grinning from ear to ear!

Who would be churlish enough not to enjoy seeing more of Diana`s jewellery, the media and others get all soppy when they see something of hers. I was pleased to see MM wearing the aquamarine ring on her wedding day. Family jewellery is something so special a memory of another.

StCharlotte · 20/11/2019 17:56

Oh Max Max max, I love you but please get a decent haircut!

Really can't get on board with the use of the word "optics" in this context. Or any context that doesn't involve vodka. [Disclaimer: grumpy old woman]

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 17:58

Halloween Grin @StCharlotte. Yes, true re vodka. Or gin. Have some gin. I could bloody use one today Gin.

I think that, on balance, the RF must think at the moment the people who want to see the bling are fewer or feel less strongly than those who would find it distasteful. I can appreciate why, although I too want a good rubber neck at the bling.

StCharlotte · 20/11/2019 17:59

PS I do understand that it is a thing though.

BeatriceTheBeast · 20/11/2019 17:59

Oh yes, maxima's hair is like mine when I let it grow. This is why I have short hair!

JaimeBronde · 20/11/2019 18:02

Maxima is just so lovely!
