I honestly wouldn’t class a size 14 or 16 as plus sized. I am size 20 and 6ft tall if I was a 16 I would be well pleased and would feel positively svelte.

TheSummoningDark · 22/11/2019 17:55

Daddylonglegs I agree with you and it's a difficult one really. As a size 16 and 5'7 I am in the lucky position where I can choose between a lot of the high street shops and the plus size shops. On the other hand dress size is a bit of an arbitrary measurement. There are shops I avoid because I know the size 18 won't fit (and that's their biggest size). I haven't bought a pair of long boots since our local Evans closed.

I hate ordering online because I like to feel the fabric but that's something I can mostly avoid. The bigger the dress size, the more likely you are to need to go online, equally if you are tall. And FWIW, I don't see any difference between you and me in terms of size except your statuesque height.

What I will say is I've followed this thread since the beginning, as well as the "what are you wearing today" thread. I love both, but have got far more help from this one in terms of what will work for me and what won't, and where I can push the boundaries, which is why I chose to post here. Everybody likes to wear things that make them feel good but you can get away with a lot more when you are a size 6.

I touched on this before slightly, I had a bit of a low point during the summer. I'd given up if I'm honest and felt horrible. I was buying stuff without even trying it on with a that'll do attitude and wouldn't let DH take a picture of me on holiday because I couldn't face looking at it. If somebody'd told me then I'd be posting pictures on here I would've laughed.

Long and slightly embarrassing gush over, I will get back in my box.Smile

BTW, the White Stuff pinafore is on 20% off

Peachypips78 · 22/11/2019 20:53

Daddy- I am 5'2 so a size 14-16 on me is prob no different to a size 20 on you I would think? I wish I was svelte!!!

Summoning you bitch Grin

TheSummoningDark · 22/11/2019 21:35

Sorry.

Myshitisreal · 22/11/2019 23:58

@daddylonglegs1965 as a size 16,I'm not sure how I should interpret your comment, I certainly don't feel svelte and struggle with clothes/fit/confidence/whattowear.

Tonight's outfit, pic is terrible. Old black h and m long sleeves baaic dress, cupcake cult t shirt, old waistcoat and shirt.Black pleather trousers from h and m not visible. I think it looks better in real life. Least I hope so 😕

Myshitisreal I like it. I want a waistcoat now.

Sorry for my ramble earlier. It was poorly worded and could probably have been summarised by

  1. Plus size is surprisingly difficult to define simply.
  2. I really appreciate everybody's contributions to this thread. You all have different styles and you all look great.

I shall go back to the box of shame now.

Myshitisreal · 23/11/2019 00:56

Waistcoats are great. Get out of that box! 😂 🥰

Daddylonglegs1965 · 23/11/2019 04:34

Sorry I didn’t mean to offend anyone I just meant some of you look so good and the clothes look better on you than some of the models retailers have chosen to model some of the clothes and you don’t even look plus size to me. So what I am saying is my comment was meant as a positive.
The summoning dark - I have decided for me aged over 50 and although I love the idea of them with an enormous tum I can’t even pull a WS pinafore or anywhere ekse pinafore off sadly even with 20% off lol.
But I will continue to enjoy this thread and the confidence tips and inspirational photos whilst trying to continue with WS so I feel better and healthier in my self and I have a bit more choice of clothing available to me.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 23/11/2019 04:35

SW not WS

AliasGrape · 23/11/2019 10:02

I knew what you meant daddylonglegs I certainly think of size 14/16 as ‘regular size’ and on me, and my particular build, 14 looks positively svelte. But even though it isn’t text book definition of ‘plus size’ I certainly FEEL plus size at size 16 or even (in the dim and distant past) when I was a 14 because it’s still pretty much the biggest of all my friends (I don’t think there’s one among them who had ever been above a 12, apart from one friend who was a 20 when I met her but got really diet and exercise obsessed and is now an 8/10 but really not well with it). Also because even though most high street shops sell up to 18/20 the more fashionable ones often don’t, or their version of a 16 is more like a 12. I was a 14 in my teens and early 20s and never joined my peers in topshop, miss selfridge etc because even their bigger sizes just weren’t for the likes of me. So I’ve always felt very plus size whether I was or not.

Anyway, today is a white stuff tunic via eBay, first wear of it trying to decide how I feel about the fit it feels loose in weird places and tight in others and neither one thing nor the other really but it’s a pretty colour! Throwing my Sainsburys cardigan over it because it’s bloody cold here.

bridgetreilly · 23/11/2019 10:30

Ooh, I love this thread!

Today I am wearing a Gudrun Sjoden stretchy top in bright pink with white polka dots, layered under a GAP top in navy with thin white stripes, layered under a new denim pinafore from Sainsburys which I am very excited about. I've been looking for one for ages and couldn't find one I liked. But also I'm excited because I took a chance on buying a size 20 without trying it on and it fits! I've lost quite a lot of weight in the last few months and haven't really bought any new clothes yet. So yay for new clothes and a new size!!

bridgetreilly · 23/11/2019 10:40

Picture proof!

Oh love it bridgetreilly! I was this close to sending my pinafore to the charity shop, but you've inspired me to keep it.

Here I am in, Topshop Jonis, 16L, Uniqlo Merino jumper, XL, Merry & Bright t-shirt as before, M&S leather hiking boots and an ancient pair of leg warmers! Cold again today.

You look so cosy Nancy.bridgetreilly, love your clothes. Wearing yesterday’s clothes, walked dogs and need todo some cleaning.

SteelRiver · 23/11/2019 11:41

I have a hair appt today. I feel awful and want to stay in bed but I csnt let my stylist down. I have on black bootcut trousers (most flattering shape on me) and a stripy jumper from Next. It has pink, beige, mustard and navy stripes, with gold glitter thread running through. So pretty!

argueifnecessary · 23/11/2019 11:50

Today I'm wearing a linen (summer) dress from George (16), an organic cotton long-sleeved t-shirt from c&a (L) and tights from an online shop. Forgotten the name. Oh, and rocket dogs although they don't go that well. Also, as I weigh 84kg I'm definitely plus size.

At the risk of making an arse of myself again, I think it's clear that we all see something different in the mirror than we do in other posters' pictures. I'm not going to say any more, it'll come out wrong again and I'll wish I had stayed in my box.

TheSummoningDark · 23/11/2019 13:53

Georgie Dress and Lace Trim jumper, both Fat Face.
Thermal Leggings, 0.63 tog rated.
Thermal Socks.
Walking Boots.

NancyEspana · 23/11/2019 14:24

summoning, get out of your box immediately! You are fine.

I do think it's tricky and I remember when I joined the last thread and wondered if I should really be posting here or not. But, I genuinely am plus size, even though I'm not super tall and can get away with some things in size 14 and very occasionally a 12, but that's usually when somewhere has got the sizing totally wrong. Really, I'm a 16. I also sometimes wear 18s and 20s. Sizing is so variable depending on the shop and article of clothing.

I also get what daddylonglegs was saying too though. If I was 6 foot tall I probably would be svelte at my dress size! But alas, I am not. I am 5'8", so I am decidedly in the plus size category at a size 16 and I definitely get more inspiration for me on here than on the other WAYWT thread, though I love that one too.

@argueifnecessary, I love that outfit! It looks great and I love how you've styled a summer dress to make it wintry!

TheSummoningDark · 23/11/2019 14:50

Thanks Nancy, that's along the lines of what I was trying to say. I blame sleep deprivation, when I don't know what I'm talking about, what chance has anybody else got!

I'm trying to sort out more clothes and send them to the charity shop this weekend but I'm a clothes hoarder.

Peachypips78 · 23/11/2019 16:58

I thought you phrased it perfectly Summoning!

My 5'2" size 16 is very different to a 6' size 16.

I am wearing boring jeans and a Joules (via Heart Foundation) very thick jersey top with a sequinned star on it. If you brush it one way it's silver, the other way it's gold! I'm so happy!

I've run out of photos so I'll post it tomorrow.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 23/11/2019 18:58

bridgetreilly love your pinafore is it navy or black and what material is it please? I got a lovely cord midi skirt from Sainsburys the cord is quite stretchy so it’s lovely and comfortable to wear.

bridgetreilly · 23/11/2019 20:21

It's a dark blue denim. No stretch.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 23/11/2019 20:57

Looks lovely on you.

bridgetreilly · 23/11/2019 22:38

Thank you! I'm very pleased with it.
