In Sweden it is to do with money. For the children of Princess Madeleine and Prince Carl Phillip to be HRH it would mean they were entitled to taxpayer support (apanage). Parliament has long been unhappy about the growing costs of the rapidly expanding Royal family so this is the compromise

Lunde · 07/10/2019 13:55

For Madeleine's children it is possible that her kids may lose their positions in line to the throne as well. According to the Law to remain in line to the Swedish throne the children must receive a Swedish Education but the move to Florida has made this difficult.

There is also some discontent in Sweden that Madeleine continues to receive full taxpayer funding despite drastically downsizing her role and moving to Florida suddenly a few years ago. The only thing she really does these days is a few gala fundraisers for her Mother's Childhood Foundation.

Sadly my Swedish isn't up to much! Grin

Ninkaninus · 07/10/2019 14:52

There is a translate button, bottom right. Smile

Essentially both said the same thing - they are happy with this change as it means their children will be afforded more opportunity to pursue their own interests freely as private individuals.

Prince CP and Sofia put more emphasis than Madeleine on the fact that they themselves will continue to support the King and the Crown Princess in Royal duties. Which stands to reason, I suppose, given that Madeleine is not in residence in Sweden.

Lunde · 07/10/2019 15:12

They are both saying that they are positive to the changes as it gives the children more opportunities to develop their own interests and determine their own future lives.

Back to fashion for a moment and this is quite the outfit from Princess Caroline!

I was almost scared to click there Queen! She always does Chanel couture.
To catch a thief was on tele yesterday and Grace was just so stunning.

  • Could I ask any Swedish-speaking posters a translation question - I assume it's short for something, but what does the measurement 'dl' mean when cooking?

I have a few Swedish recipes that call for a 'dl' of certain ingredients, and google translate just leaves that as 'dl' in English.

banivani · 07/10/2019 16:50

Dl = deciliter = 1/10 of a liter ie 100 ml.

Fun fact - polish recipes do dekagrams too!

Lunde · 07/10/2019 17:41

In Swedish recipes you often measure stuff in measuring jugs/cups in a similar way to American recipes. So 1dl =100ml. So you just use a measuring jug when you need 9dl of flour to make a batch of Kanelbullar (Cinnamon roll buns)

Ninkaninus · 07/10/2019 18:22

Seeing dl in a recipe really makes me homesick 🇩🇰🇩🇰

MotherofPearl · 07/10/2019 18:48

That is certainly an eye-catching dress Princess Caroline has on there @QueenOfTheAndals! Though she has aged, of course, she still has such a beautiful face I think, so it almost doesn't matter what she wears. Though I think she'd look better in something sleek and simple.

Stravapalava · 07/10/2019 19:16

Marie Ducreut looks amazing in that link. Really va va voom!

justasking111 · 07/10/2019 19:27

In the old days the offspring of the sovereign were married off all over the globe thus reducing the strain on the British purse. Now that they refuse to do such a thing, they are all in our faces all the time.

TipseyTorvey · 07/10/2019 20:04

Justasking, given the furore about Harry marrying an American can you imagine what would happen if one of them married a German these days? People forget the history and now everyone has to marry English roses, or whatever the male equivalent is. This is how haemophilia got so prevalent in the royals in Russia back in the day (so I was taught).

RoseQuartzGlow · 07/10/2019 21:50

But the RF ARE Germans!!

CPF & CPM are in Paris. I think she looks great in the navy and white dress, though have no idea how she copes in those heels - though the royal women all seem to manage it. Is the colour of the dress French navy? I've never really known what French navy is, but I like the sound of it. Blush

Ninkaninus · 07/10/2019 22:04

If you’re used to wearing high heels it’s not hard to wear them for a few hours a day. As long as you’re not on your feet constantly for hours it’s doable. Although I’m starting to feel it more now (aged 43), and often choose not to wear my really high heels anymore, because I just can’t be bothered. Maybe a few more years and Mary will start toning it down too...

I like the dress.

JaimeBronde · 07/10/2019 22:05

Absolutely Tipsey in order that European Royal & Imperial blood should not be tainted & the chance of making advantageous/beneficial political union there wasn't in 'royal/imperial' eyes a huge pool of suitors.
In my reading about Queen Victoria & all her extended family, the Almanac De Gotha (a directory of all European royalty & higher nobility) was consulted to find the 'right bride or groom'. Basically a little black book.
Victoria & her daughter Vicky would spend hours pouring over it.
However Prince Albert did advise that it would be better to look further afield for spouses so fresh blood (i.e. unrelated Prince/Princess from a morganatic background so not classed as fully royal) would actually strengthen the royal bloodline.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 07/10/2019 22:32

That blue dress is beautiful!

DevonUkelele · 07/10/2019 23:07

That blue dress is stunning - and I would definitely also describe it as French navy.

Meanwhile, I am still struck by how alike all the Swedes are!

Thank you so much, @banivani and @Lunde!

A new era of cardamom-infused baking is about to dawn, chez moi.
