What is a hip stylish 40 year old woman wearing on a night out these days?

Help me, I haven’t been ‘out-out’ for so very long I am completely out of the loop.

I’m going to birthday party in a trendy London east-end bar and I haven’t the first clue what to wear.

Style tips anyone?

On a recent night out, I wore a pair of tight coated skinny jeans with peep toe heels and I felt fabulous, like Olivia Newton John 😁

NotPennysBoat · 28/09/2019 11:18

What are 'coated' skinny jeans please? #outoftouch

Teddybear45 · 28/09/2019 11:20

Jeans, an off-shoulder top, and wedge trainers always looks hip and cool in the east end.

Pinkarsedfly · 28/09/2019 11:58

Hehe ruggypeg I wore peep toes too and had exactly the same thought Grin

I suspect DH did too Wink

Coated jeans are skinny jeans with a kind of shiny coating so they have a bit of a sheen and look a little bit leathery.

RuggyPeg · 28/09/2019 12:00

NotPenny - A bit like fake leather / pleather / waxy pants. So you're still in the comfort zone of jeans but they're slightly more going-outy!

wonkylegs · 28/09/2019 14:05

I'm 40 - I don't think I'm particularly stylish but I do work in architecture and get told I am.
The last party out I went to I wore bright pink skinny jeans, black corset top with a really nice fitted black jacket with rolled up sleeves
Silver ballet pumps (I can't really wear heels anymore due to arthritis) & statement silver necklace.
I got a lot of compliments.
I've worn the same outfit but with black jeans to a very stylish architects 40th party at a bar and I wasn't out of place.
I'm short, skinny with an ample bust and hate choosing clothes.

tierraJ · 28/09/2019 14:14

I'm 43, I either wear (now its autumn sigh)

Skinny black jeans & a cami top / pretty top of some kind & high heeled ankle boots

Dress & high heeled knee boots/ ankle boots

Over the top I wear a biker jacket

thethoughtfox · 28/09/2019 14:15

Jumpsuits. They are an unexpected miracle. I am a comedy apple shape and only tried one on because my friend ( size 16) wore one to her 40th and looked slim and fantastic. They slim your tummy and look chic and less 'older lady' than some dresses.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 28/09/2019 14:20

@thethoughtfox where are these slimming jumpsuits you've seen for the larger sized lady please? Smile

Ninkaninus · 28/09/2019 14:22

Jumpsuit and heels, or dress and trainers. Or if you want to be very hip and stylish, jumpsuit and trainers.

Or boyfriend jeans, trainers and blazer. With hat.

I like dressing up to go out-out, so I’d wear my yellow silk blouse, black coated jeans and Burgundy block heeled ankle boots. Plus a burgundy cashmere cape for extra warmth.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2019 14:35

I must admit I don't think wedge trainers ever look cool.

I like midi dresses and trainers with a leather jacket / jumpsuit ditto.

Just bought a pleather mini skirt which I hope might work with opaques and black trainers.

I rarely wear heels these days, but have a few pairs of nice heeled ankle boots which work well with midi dresses, jumpsuits and rolled up jeans, or normal length skinnies.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2019 14:36

Am neither hip, stylish nor 40 though.

JaceLancs · 28/09/2019 14:39

Black skinnies
Sheer top - I have quite a few but my favourites are a steel grey one and a black one with cream embroidery - if worn with a nude bra make me feel glam without being too revealing
I prefer flat pointed toe shoes and have many variations on the Valentino rockstud style

Ninkaninus · 28/09/2019 14:40

Yeah wedge trainers are quite uncool these days I’d say. Unless pp meant platform trainers.

I continued wearing my ASH ones for quite a few years even though they really were quite passé but I’ve sold them on now as they just felt too dated, and I didn’t love them enough to wear them regardless.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 28/09/2019 18:42

I'm 46 and went out in London last Saturday. I wore a skater dress, heels, and had my comfy shoes in my bag for walking between venues.
On my next night out when there is a blue moon I will wear a leather mini(ISH) skirt, with a nice blouse, tights and ankle boots.
I know I'm probably looking a bit mutton, but honestly in my head I'm still 28Grin

Ninkaninus · 28/09/2019 18:48

You won’t look mutton at all. Women don’t owe it to anyone to give up dressing the way they love and feel comfortable in just because they’re no longer in the first flush of sexualised youth.

AchangeIsSound · 28/09/2019 19:19

People really wear trainers or dungarees on a night out?! I'm seriously out of touch. Seriously. Shock

Letthemysterybe · 28/09/2019 19:54

Judging by my night out last week, you can’t go wrong with a midi dress, leather jacket and trainers. Or jeans and chunky boots.

XingMing · 28/09/2019 19:57

I wear a cocktail frock with a jumper over, and kneehigh flattish boots for most things dressy. With a hat if it's dress-to-impress.

XingMing · 28/09/2019 19:57

And elbow length kid gloves.

ShadowOnTheSun · 28/09/2019 20:24

Not having a dig at anyone and obviously people are free to wear whatever they please/are comfortable in. But I don't get this 'it seems to be a ditsy midi dress+ trainers+biker jacket or a jumpsuit with heels/trainers' thing. And then everybody looks exactly the same. Isn't that a bit..boring? Why not just wear whatever you want, 'on trend' or not? I know these midi dresses+trainers are 'trendy' now and most of the girls wear them day or evening, every second one. And that's precisely the reason I won't (and I hate these House on a prairie midi dresses AND dresses+trainers, but that's just my opinion). Just be YOU.

Musicforsnorks · 28/09/2019 20:36

Me too, I loved midi dresses but now they’re having a fashion moment that’s kind of a death knell in the sense that once the fad passes everyone will loathe them and call them dated.

But it happens with everything so not worth stressing.

Most people up north here are still out in skinnies and a top. Trainers or boots. And they’re all too hard to wear a jacket or coat at night 😁

Grafittiqueen · 28/09/2019 20:40

Last night out I was on everyone was wearing midi dresses with trainers and a leather jacket.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 28/09/2019 20:58

Well this is the thing isn’t it. I like to look vaguely ‘on trend’ but when it just becomes a uniform it gets a bit boring.

And I don’t really have the time, budget or inclination to slavishly follow what is ‘in’

But then i don’t like to feel like I totally missed the memo either.

I'm 45 and my 'happy' outfit is a pair of wide legged silk trousers from The Row, a Jospeh cashmere v neck and a pair of Maje sandals. YSL tux jacket on the top if it's cold.

I ain't wearing no jumpsuit, I'm menopausal and I need a pee, those Row babies have an elasticated waist.
