Has anyone decided to ditch their skinny jeans for winter?

Just curious.
I’m seeing more threads and discussion about moving away from this winter staple.
Me too, but to be honest I am having issues trying to adapt my coats to skirts/dresses, as I don’t like other trouser styles.
But I still feel,Ive had enough of them, even though they go with everything .

I’m curious how people will dress for winter otherwise especially on days when you really need to cover up from rain/wind.

Not winter yet, but I wore a navy flared midi skirt with a grey jumper today with tights in the rain and wind and it wasn’t that bad, no more so than in jeans really.

Is it that we’re just used to skinny jeans and skirts feel weird in comparison? It’s not like they don’t get wet......

I want leggings that act like a skirt so I can call them skeggings 😁

I'm fed up with my skinny jeans too!
@which1 would you happen to have a link to the warm umpire dress thread?

MariusJosipovic · 23/09/2019 19:34

Hah my one year old has some leggings with a skirt attached, they shall henceforth be known as her skeggings Grin

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 19:44

😆😆😆 skeggies!

I hate my skinny jean's, always feel that my crotch cant breathe!

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 19:52

I love how people often say they’d be comfy if you only bought the correct size.
I have a pair from joules, great jeans but the crotch is like barbed wire.
They fit correctly, and a size up would be too big - I tried.

Jeggings are good, especially by jcrew, but still feel like i am restricted.

My problem with skirts in winter is coats. Midi skirts with a bum covering coat just make Me look like a bag lady, and the same coat with a short skirt makes me look like I’ve forgotten to put a Skirt on. So the skirt and coat length need to be perfectly
Suited, which takes more effort than ‘chuck them on’ jeans.

Bellsandwhistle · 23/09/2019 19:58

I bought 2 pairs of bootcut Levi’s in the states this summer. One to wear with trainers the other with tan block heel sandals. Feel like a bit of a 70s vibe when I wear them though prob more 90s really but they almost feel flared after years of skinnies! On the way out of the shop I thought have I gone mad buying bootcut and went back for a pair of skinnies too. I’m really enjoying wearing the bootcut and feel more modern than the skinnies which now feel a bit dated to me. I totally get you guys!

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 19:58

I’m thinking of getting a hat like Vera, a waxed thing and just saying sod it, I’m wearing my skirts with a wool blazer or raincoat.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 20:00

I’m not armed about skinnies looking dated, but for those who are, they are seriously ubiquitous. Like everywhere. Which in one sense is good, I loathe elitism, but I never understood those ‘expensive’ threads that specified skinny jeans with everything if you wish to stand out and look well off. Confused

Arsed, not armed. But hey.

Ok I’ve had a glass of wine and VERA is my style idol. I’m not joking.

They wouldn't be skinny jeans if I wore them.

which1 · 23/09/2019 20:03

Summer

Sorry, I didn't post or watch it so no link but the title was something along the lines of 'Thick dresses to wear with tights or boots'. I think it was Sunday morning.

Two different posters mentioned Esprit which I've not bought from before.

Now tempted to get this:

Oh light bulb moment! I love my straight jeans but find them difficult to wear in the winter but someone has just mentioned slouchy boots - that's the answer! Either that or some truly awesome sock boots I've just ordered from asos Smile

Doobigetta · 23/09/2019 20:04

No. I ditch them in the summer and get them out again in winter. Don’t care if they’re “over”, they’re warm, they work with boots, they work with big jumpers and they don’t trail in muddy puddles. These are all good reasons to keep wearing them, as far as I’m concerned.

Zoflorabore · 23/09/2019 20:09

I swear I have sensory issues as I’m at my comfiest in PJ bottoms but they must be cuffed and not flapping about!

If I could wear them outside then I would. Skinnies look atrocious on me, as do all jeans and I feel so uncomfortable.

What is left? I don’t do skirts/dresses except for special occasions.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 20:11

I wonder why skirts/dresses became synonymous with ‘special occasions ’.

Who makes these rules?

Zoflorabore · 23/09/2019 20:14

I don’t know, I’m a SAHM and I think I would feel majorly overdressed rocking up to the school in a dress. Maybe that’s just my own insecurity! I also hate my legs Smile

I just wish I had found my thing. Whatever that may be.

LaDameAuxLicornes · 23/09/2019 20:15

If I'm wearing jeans they will be skinny - I just think any other shape of jeans feel and look crap on me now. Not sure I can ever go back to flappy denim.

BUT, I'm trying to give up jeans as far as possible and replace with skirts and dresses. I am all about the cord skirts with at the moment. Have some lovely ones from Hobbs and eyeing a mustard one from Boden at the moment. I will be doing wool skirts for more formal days.

Re coats, unless you are Alexa Chung I think you need some sort of waist if wearing a longer skirt and shorter coat. I have a lovely hooded, belted trench from Aigle that is totally rainproof and very flattering.

And yes to seeing lots of Scandinavians in calf length woollen coats, though I disagree that they don't wear skinny jeans, especially the younger crowd - I was in a Scandinavian country for work recently and skinnies were ubiquitous!

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 20:24

Ah, i thought the scandi’s preferred vintage Levi, etc, wide legs. I’m only going off the web.

I do think skirts/dresses don’t have to look ‘overkill’.
It’s surely a matter of perception/trends?
If a pair of pants can look casual there must be a skirt version.

Last week I felt great in a midi cord a-line with a close fit merino jumper. I had tights and my docs on. I felt friggin liberated, sleek, and most definitely casual. That said, I could have looked like a tosser but I felt good!

I pretty much ditched them a couple of years ago - I kept one black pair for emergency work situations, but rarely wore them.

I wear:

Wide cropped trousers - patterned tights or long socks underneath if it’s cold
Whistles barrel leg jeans
Short-ish a-lime skirts with opaque tights - I find these work best if it’s raining, with my big parka
Midi-skirts or dresses - only with shorter jackets, leather biker, but I think I might try with my longish faux fur coat

I just got some cropped 501 Levi’s, in black, which I plan to wear with DM boots (which I am still breaking in!).

Other footwear is generally brogues, flat Chelsea boots, or leather trainers (Stan Smith, Continental 80, or Veja).

Milkstick · 23/09/2019 22:15

I waver between jeans and dresses, but I've been hearing good things about Snag tights so might be getting away from jeans for a while. I have always, even since I was a dot of a teen, hated waistbands digging in and I have to undo them in the car so I can drive without being distracted. I have other sensory stuff going on though. I also get bellyache from tights and always have done... Hope the next gen can change this for me but will see. My main issue with all leg coverings is that my waist sits high and they never seem to have enough depth from the crotch up, though I have found a couple of pairs that work fairly well. Sure I saw a post about leg warmers on here recently... 😁

Zenithbear · 23/09/2019 22:24

I have to wear skirts/dresses for work as we aren't allowed jeans and I haven't any trousers. I just wear them with thermal tights.
I still have a couple of pairs of skinny jeans at weekends though. They suit me better than any other shape jeans.

Danglingmod · 23/09/2019 22:32

Who's wearing jumpers already? Surely it's not jumper weather yet; it's still about 20! It was a flippy skirt and vest kind of weather this weekend.

But for when it does get colder, cord skirts, stretchy wool skirts, pinafores, cord roll-ups, straight leg jeans will be my winter weather gear.
