Has anyone decided to ditch their skinny jeans for winter?

Just curious.
I’m seeing more threads and discussion about moving away from this winter staple.
Me too, but to be honest I am having issues trying to adapt my coats to skirts/dresses, as I don’t like other trouser styles.
But I still feel,Ive had enough of them, even though they go with everything .

I’m curious how people will dress for winter otherwise especially on days when you really need to cover up from rain/wind.

Not winter yet, but I wore a navy flared midi skirt with a grey jumper today with tights in the rain and wind and it wasn’t that bad, no more so than in jeans really.

Is it that we’re just used to skinny jeans and skirts feel weird in comparison? It’s not like they don’t get wet......

Yesterday I wore (for lack of an appropriate coat/Mac) a burgundy below knee pleated skirt with tights, doc boots and a mid length dark olive Barbour rain Mac.

So the skirt poked out but it swished nicely, nobody stared in horror and I felt curiously good about it, even pulled out my old Margaret howell silk navy scarf. Again, felt like a skinny version of Vera but growing to like it.
Wore hood up as it rained.

Later I tried a few of my old skinny jeans on and before I’d even got them up my legs I felt trapped. They really do squeeze unpleasantly in comparison and I hadn’t noticed this before.

By the way, I haven’t gone off skinnies nor do I think people look dated in them. To be honest I love the look whether it is on the way out or not.
I’m just not comfy in them and feel self conscious and have had enough after years of trying.

I struggle with this. Am a 16/18 which means that a lot of things look good in theory but not in practice. One of these days I may decide to lose weight but not right now.

Skinnies have been a uniform for me for years, but I do find them easier to style in the summer as with sandals the ankle bit is flattering. I carry the majority of my weight on my tummy and hips, but have ok legs etc.

This winter I'm feeling a little dated in them, I can't find the right boots perhaps.

I love wearing relaxed skinny styles, but again, am struggling to know how to work that for winter.

I have a fair few dresses and skirts, but the boot situ foils me again. My biker boots look a bit dated with them, can't find knee highs I like, ankle boots need to be just right or are too dainty. I don't do heels really either.

🤷

I like flares. They are amazing.
If I can't find any, I'm going to make some this year.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 25/09/2019 18:12

I am average height and skinny and have wasted so much money on jeans that end up just feeling uncomfortable. I am much happier in skirts and dresses so I keep my one pair of skinny jeans for cleaning and dog walking. Where are you finding thermal or cable knit tights? I need a colour I can wear with a mid denim dress and chocolate brown suede long boots.

Tanaqui · 25/09/2019 19:42

Fat Face, white stuff, boden, gap, m and s- have had thick tights from all in various colours, ribbed, cable knit, wool mix, etc. Also sometimes in TK Maxx.

@RezCowgirl that you SO much for this. I deffo will seek out some double lined tube skirts/dresses as I think that will really suit my figure. The Whistles ones are sold but if anyone sees any others let me know - especially for petites. I am thinking a burgandy may be really nice for the colder months?

I am small (5'2) size 6/8 so often autumn/winter gear can swamp me a little even tho I love the comfy cosy look. Rather than looking stylish I just end up looking mess & untidy. Where do you usually go for your crew jumpers?

If anyone is looking for some gorgeous winter staples at affordable prices I got lovely stuff in Tesco of all places last night! Fab brown Chelsea boots, a fitted jumper dress, a cream ribbed fitted cardy and gorgous skinny cigarrete style brown patterned trousers & a selected of corded/knit tights - all for under £100. Great to update the wardrobe a little without breaking the bank.

Minta85 · 26/09/2019 13:09

@tiutinkerbell New Look have some lovely fitted ribbed crew neck jumpers at the moment in several colours.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 26/09/2019 14:11

I bought about 5 of the New Look rib jumpers last year and wore them to death, they are still fine. Proof that you don't need to spend a fortune on clothes! They are on offer at the moment too.

Juog · 26/09/2019 17:28

I can't where skirts or dresses because of my terrible leg veins, and I absolutely hate the feel of tights.

RezCowgirl · 26/09/2019 18:17

@tiutinkerbell Charity shops - more often than not in the menswear section so they fit a little bit oversized but I've been meaning to try Uniqlo as they seem highly rated.

Musicforsnorks · 26/09/2019 20:31

Well, already having huge issues - unless it’s just me and I am going mad -

Skirts.....
Been to two major cities this week. Can’t find anything.
Most skirts were thin, gauzy, impossibly long or lurid colours. I just wanted something basic, a-line, a decent winter weight.

Needed two jumpers to go with skirts. Couldn’t find any. Mostly, acrylic, even up to £150, horribly thin cashmere, or oversized fit. Nothing that will go with my skirts (I’ve only got 2).

The idea of pulling this off for the really cold months feels impossible at the moment. Not many coats with wool in them and some of them were over £300 for the pleasure.

Wore my navy cord midi skirt today.
Every bit of fluff in the universe decided to stick to it 😆

Uniqlo merino or cashmere for jumpers??

Is the skirt new? I had similar issues with a black one but it settled down after a heavy dose of fabric softener in the wash.

Minta85 · 26/09/2019 21:06

Marks and Spencer a A line skirt, good fabric weight for winter.

I like jogger jeans. Super comfy, cut like joggers, made of soft denim. With converse or short leather ugg boots. @Zoflorabore could be good for you?

Cheesybiscuits01 · 26/09/2019 21:37

Can I ask what slouchy boots are people wearing with straight leg or mom jeans?

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 26/09/2019 22:43

Try Woolovers for jumpers- you do have to look past the biddy styling and size down but there are gems to be had.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 26/09/2019 22:44

Sezanne has some lovely knitwear too

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 26/09/2019 22:44

Sezane

PickAChew · 26/09/2019 22:53

I'm keeping on with them for my killer knee high boots, when it's cold but I've ordered a load of slim and straight fit jeans. Not because I like them but because I'm beginning to struggle with getting skinny jeans on and off and they sometimes hurt my knees :( (50 in a few weeks and my joints are knackered)

PickAChew · 26/09/2019 22:54

And definitely no wide legs - never got over the elbow injury when I faceplanted in some.

PickAChew · 26/09/2019 23:00

I hate jeggings because they never have pockets, or if they do, the fabric is too stretchy to look right if you use the pockets.

And despise skirts and dresses.

TigerJoy · 26/09/2019 23:04

What about wide legged jumpsuits? Are they completely over?
