Has anyone decided to ditch their skinny jeans for winter?

Just curious.
I’m seeing more threads and discussion about moving away from this winter staple.
Me too, but to be honest I am having issues trying to adapt my coats to skirts/dresses, as I don’t like other trouser styles.
But I still feel,Ive had enough of them, even though they go with everything .

I’m curious how people will dress for winter otherwise especially on days when you really need to cover up from rain/wind.

Not winter yet, but I wore a navy flared midi skirt with a grey jumper today with tights in the rain and wind and it wasn’t that bad, no more so than in jeans really.

Is it that we’re just used to skinny jeans and skirts feel weird in comparison? It’s not like they don’t get wet......

milkstick def have a look at Snag tights. They are sized by height and by the size of your hips/waist/bum/tummy rather than the usual 10/12 etc. I’m a standard size 10, but with a small waist and bigger bum and hips, so unless I buy really ££ tights like Wolford I find they droop at the crotch. (Maybe I am “long” in the gusset to waist department?) Anyway, the Snag tights are really great. I just wish they did 100 denier.

I still wear the same clothes I did when I was 17, I'm 28 now.
That wardrobe includes skinny jeans.

Links to cute outfits and where the hell to buy them would be nice.

Genuinely suck at clothes. Atm it's skinnies and tshirts. Before i had a kid, I wore a lot of dresses and heels as I was a night wanderer Wine then after kid went back to my teenage ways of skinnies. BUT i did buy some new skinnies in M&S if that helps.

I envy all these insta fashionistas Blush

I hate skinny jeans now. I wore a pair last year with a pair of ankle boots which had previous been my go to outfit.

I caught sight of myself in a shop window and I was mortified at (a) how dated I looked and (b) how unflattering they were.

They obviously always looked unflattering but I clearly saw past that becuase they were 'fashionable' I've not worn them since.

That said I have kept one pair to wear tucked into durbarry boots when watching Ds play football. And or rugby.

I think midi dresses with a number over the top is a good look.

Floisme · 24/09/2019 07:32

I think British weather is one reason why they've hung around so long. I've kept one pair that were in decent condition and relatively kind to my thighs and I'll wear them occasionally with a favourite slouchy jumper that doesn't work quite as well with anything else. But that's about it. In wet weather I'll wear tapered, straight or slim leg.

hammeringinmyhead · 24/09/2019 07:36

I tend to wear baggier, slouchy tops and chunky footwear so nothing else looks right with the rest of my wardrobe. I tried a slim leg rolled up with a jumper and I looked about 3 sizes larger than I am. They're staying!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 24/09/2019 10:42

NAP still have loads of skinny jeans for sale so they're not dead yet. I won't be buying any more, but if I want to wear them with a loose top or when it's cold and rainy I will. I think that the really stretchy jegging kind are totally dated now, as are any ripped styles, but a decent thicker pair can still look good if styled right.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 24/09/2019 11:04

I'm trying to move from skinnies to rolled up Chino style trousers but I'm not sure how they are going to work with socks for the winter. I chucked two pairs of barely worn waxed skinnies into the charity bag last week. I have one back up pair for emergencies that will no doubt get a few wears but hopefully not too many.

I got a gorgeous coat at the weekend that I'm hoping will solve my winter woes - Dunnes coat.

Esprit mentioned above is great for dresses and mango can be good too. I'm trying not to buy anything at the moment so can't link to anything in particular for fear of temptation Wink

I'm trying to work out how to weather proof two jumpsuits I wore all summer. I will need something under them (I'm a very cold creature) so I'm thinking my Uniqlo Merino jumpers may work and maybe brogues?

abitoflight · 24/09/2019 12:52

Oh dear. I'm having to have a rethink now if I'm too behind the times...

yearinyearout · 24/09/2019 13:04

I have a nightmare every year when it gets cooler. I can never get nice calf length boots to fit my big calves so skirts and tights aren't an option. I make do with my converse as long as I can but look a bit of a tit when it's getting really cold. If anyone has found some good boots for the lady that is larger of leg, do let me know! I've checked out all the ones in Evans etc but they all seem a bit cheap looking, my preference would be something similar to fly boots.

tiutinkerbell · 24/09/2019 13:18

@RezCowgirl could you expands on the knit or thermal tights with stretchy tube skirts style? This sounds exactly what I want - what do you were on top? I am struggling so much with autumn style as I live in gymclothes & crop tops normally but now I am freezing!

Where do you get your tube skirts? And shoes wise - boots?

Thank youuuu!

Musicforsnorks · 24/09/2019 13:26

I’ve never like mom jeans much, they make my waist look nice but everything else looks off. I’d have no idea how to style them through winter either. the last pair I wore (a few yrs ago) were horrifically stiff and uncomfy.
Wide legs would flap about and get in my way.
And when it comes down to it, skinnies suit me more than other styles.

But they make me self conscious and uncomfortable. Physically. They aggravate my ibs Blush and just feel generally restrictive.

What we need, those of us who are up to ditching the jeans this winter, is a phot thread where we share outfit ideas and solutions to coat-length-woes!!

@yearinyearout I’m the other way, calves too narrow, so have to avoid joules and I love their boots. They have a new pair in which I’m fond of right now with suede or smooth leather choices. The review states they are amply roomy of calf 🙂

Oh no, read this thread and now I'm bidding on a few dresses on ebay!

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 24/09/2019 14:10

Year Fly Mes finish cleverly on the leg so do accommodate a larger calf- worth a shot. Not trendy but of the same vein- Moshulu is styling some boots with a heavy tribute to Fly .....

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 24/09/2019 14:11

See what I mean...

NightsOfCabiria · 24/09/2019 14:51

I don't think skin tight skinnies flatter anyone but I do like very slim, slim and straight/cropped jeans trousers as they look neater.

If you have the right figure then cropped wide leg jeans can look nice with bare legs but as others have said, what do you do to prevent freezing in winter? Socks? You'd look like a Russ Abbot character!

The problem with boot cut, wide and flared jeans/trousers is that they're dangerous. I've lost count of the times I've been tripped up and nearly gone flying whilst wearing them in the past.

I do like casual knitted dresses with flat boots and opaque tights (or trainers) though.

hammeringinmyhead · 24/09/2019 22:27

I recommend Duo Boots if you have larger or narrower calves. I only really buy their ankle boots now, because I get a bit warm in knee-highs, but they do 30-50cm calf circumference.

RezCowgirl · 24/09/2019 23:04

@tiutinkerbell I wear very basic tops, usually black, long sleeve with a slash or crew neck as these suit my neckline. Then bring some interest with a colourful scarf. Double lined tube skirts are brilliant at holding it all in like the skinny jean does. I bought mine from Whistles a few years ago in fact they still have them though I have a shorter version. Here www.whistles.com/women/sale/skirts/jersey-tube-skirt-27502.html
They're easy to style with trainers t-shirt (tucked in at the front) and a leather jacket for a casual look.
Tweed shorts and tights with a crew neck jumper is another staple for me in the autumn. I usually wear with Doc martens but it would work with Chelsea boots, ankle boots with a small heel.

I’ve been scunnered with jeans in general for ages and am moving towards dresses and tights most of the time. I have a pair of super soft jeans for dayshift at work and really loose joggies for nightshift (in uniform at work).

I need comfort 100% of the time Grin

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 24/09/2019 23:28

Love the tweed shorts and tights look. Anyone know where to get any?

MariusJosipovic · 25/09/2019 12:01

I NEED those shorts in my life!

Musicforsnorks · 25/09/2019 12:08

The shorts are nice, but the girl’s pose has that 2008-esque twisted pigeon toed, contorted schoolgirl faux awkwardness that makes my own toes curl.

I have gone off skinnies too (apart from when walking dog, as skinnies tuck into wellies so nicely)

I have always worn dresses and skirts a lot

The coat is important, IMO the following works, looks wise, with skirts or dresses in winter:

  • classic wool belted coat. Reiss or Hobbs always do lovely ones, £££ but they last years
  • fitted leather jacket, with big scarf
  • knee length or midi length fitted, waterproof, hooded coat. The holy grail of coats. A bit of a unicorn coat!
