Capsule wardrobe Prague to fit in a bag 40x25x20 cms

Ryanair are a shower of shites and their additional costs for luggage are ridiculous. I'm going on a trip to Prague with friends this Nov and most of the group are up for a challenge of just taking the the maximum free size bag which is 40x25x20 cms. Now I love a capsule wardrobe but that is tiny and I never pack light. I'd normally need more space than that for underwear! Any ideas for a 3 night 4 day trip?

I was thinking layering jeans, trainers, top, long jumper, long scarf and coat for the plane. I've got wide leg trousers and a t shirt with flats. I have sample bottles for make up etc.

Hi OP sorry blatantly place marking as I'm off to Rome for 4 days soon hand luggage only too!

GemmeFatale · 20/09/2019 15:37

It sounds doable to me. What are your plans for the trip?

Sooverthemill · 20/09/2019 15:46

Use article for ideas
I think when I went to NYC I took jeans, black velvet jeans, evening top, 2 x ribbed roll necks, 1 x shirt, 1 x T-shirt, trainers, ankle boots, undies, socks, leather jacket and thermal vest. Jewellery. Everything went in a small carry on suitcase.

LaPampa · 20/09/2019 15:52

I’d work out what bag you can take that actually fits those requirements as most carry on suitcases are bigger than 40cm. Then look at what you can fit in it.

hilaryguineapig · 20/09/2019 16:56

The top bag is the maximum size on Ryanair 45x25x20 cms. No handbag. Everything must fit in here.

I'm not sure what our plans are. I assume we will walk around during the day and for drinks and dinner each night. I'm basically stuck with wearing the same outfit all day/twice.

I've ordered a bag but it hasn't arrived yet.

The link doesn't work on my phone so I'll log onto my laptop later to check it out.

The Ryanair bag size is ridiculously small, only a medium sized rucksack, and you need to fit your handbag in there too. I am pretty good at travelling light but would struggle for 3-4 days with a bag of that size. We travelled with Ryanair a couple of weeks ago and they were measuring bags and charging for 'oversized' bags. People get caught out thinking they have the usual carry-on bag allowance but don't.
Wearing multiple outfits to travel in, take thinner garments in your bag rolled up. Stuff underwear in shoes. Take neutral makeup which will go with every outfit and use hotel toiletries or buy there. Be prepared to wash and re-wear stuff - you can use hotel shampoo or shower gel for this.

whitershadeofpale · 20/09/2019 17:13

I've just done it for a Lison trip as I refuse to pay. I can't recommend these www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CRC8HTZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8 highly enough. I'd layer jeans, vest, tshirt, and a long line cardigan that will look good other all your other outfits and just one pair of shoes that you'll take all trip. If you want a handbag take a small firm bag that won't take up much room in your rucksack and pack your underwear in in. Then pack one other pair of trousers and a few T-Shirts/ evening top.

Caspianberg · 20/09/2019 17:14

Ryanair now allow just a handbag size bag as you have listed as main hand luggage.

However, if you want to take an additional hand luggage bag like a typical hand luggage suitcase its only £9. That is the priority boarding plus x 2 bag option you can add at any time.

I always just pay the £9 as ryanair is way cheaper than competitors anyway.

hilaryguineapig · 20/09/2019 17:44

Priority booking is £12+ each ways so £25 both ways each. I'd pay that for the small bag plus 10k but no-one else wants to. We've already paid for seats.

"All passengers are entitled to bring 1 small personal bag on board which must fit under the seat in front of you (40cm x 20cm x 25cm). Examples include, handbag, laptop bag and small backpack. Duty free bags are also permitted in the cabin along with your cabin baggage."

What's the benefit of roll up bags whitershadeofpale? I always roll but don't use bags. Off to Lisbon in March or May.

All aboard Tell

I really like using packing cubes for this sort of situation but that’s a personal choice.

I’d wear jeans, boots, jacket or coat, and double tops (something like a vest and light knit) and a large scarf.

I’d pack one spare pair of jeans, 3 t shirt weight tops for day, a couple of evening tops, socks and undies. You might be able to squeeze in a dress too. Then either buy toiletries there to share or pack minimally for those. Small makeup bag (decant things like foundation into contact lens cases), phone charger and you’re done.

I can do a week out of a rucksack if it’s just me.

Of course it’s usually two adult a baby and a dog so that’s a car load of stuff. I miss being a minimalist traveler

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/09/2019 19:07

I'd wear:
jeans
long sleeved t-shirt
cardigan/jumper
coat
boots that are fine to wear in the evenings too
scarf to travel

I'd pack:
another pair of jeans
another jumper
a black jersey dress
a nice top to wear with jeans on one night
2 t-shirts
trainers

But for the sake of £25 I'd pay for a bit more. It's not so much the size of the bag, but not being allowed a handbag alongside which would be a pain for me.

whiteroseredrose · 20/09/2019 19:19

Seriously you'll be fine. You can fit a lot into those bags. DH and I have shared one for a few days away. One each for a week to 10 day trip.

Don't forget about cosmetics and beauty stuff though. Max 100ml containers and all must fit in a small sandwich bag or it gets binned. Lipsticks count as liquid too for some reason. I take almost nothing but it was difficult for my friend.

StopThatCat · 20/09/2019 19:46

We went to Venice for four days and packed leggings and tunic tops. Had a jumper for the plane, took one pair of comfy 'go with anything shoes' and squeezed in pjs and pants. All fit in a small rucksack and was actually quite liberating (normally weighed down with baby DH's crap!

whitershadeofpale · 20/09/2019 20:04

They just squeeze all of the air out so reduces the volume by 1/3 or so.

runwithme · 20/09/2019 20:10

We are off to Rome too but not planning on going out out so whatever we wear during the day we will wear in the evening.

I will be wearing jeans, a vest top and a light weight jumper, as well as either a thick cardigan, rain coat or leather jacket, depending on the forecast.
We are there for three full days so I will be taken 4 x tops, underwear and socks, plus pjs. Maybe another pair of jeans, or my pleather trousers.

Then minimal cosmetics- will buy shower gel and toothpaste in duty free as there are 6 of us travelling so we will get through a bottle/tube whilst we are there. Packing charger, battery pack, maybe a book, hairbrush, foundation, lippy and perfume.

Will only have the shoes that I will be wearing. No need for a handbag as I will just use one of the rucksacks. The kids have rucksacks that they will use but I am looking for something. Any suggestions?

Justmuddlingalong · 20/09/2019 20:14

Take a few different scarves. It will be cold, you'll have your coat on. With a different scarf on, it totally changes the look of your outfit. Especially in photos. 😉

JaimeBronde · 20/09/2019 20:15

I didn't know lipsticks counted as liquid? I always take my my lipgloss, mascara & primer out off my hand luggage & put them through in the clear plastic bag but lipsticks stay in my make up bag. (Foundation is powder so ok)

Atalune · 20/09/2019 20:23

If you order toiletries you can collect them air side from boots, this side stepping the whole toiletries
Conundrum.

Wear-
Jeans
Vest
Boots for walking something comfy
Long sleeve
Jumper
Coat
Scarf
Gloves and scarf in pockets.

Take-
3 more tops
Pjs
Wide leg trousers
Smarter shoes/boots
Trainers?
Silk blouse
Leather skirt
4 pants
1 more bra
1 pair of tights

Packing tips
Roll everything into little sausages and pack tightly into every nook and cranny. Stuff shoes with underwear.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 20/09/2019 20:55

Some great tips here! I actually think if I manage this packing light lark, as a pp said I'll find it quite liberating and question why I took so much shit I didn't need before Confused.

Toiletries wise I've got a load of sample size sachets from Look Fantastic of shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and perfume as whilst they're obviously still liquid and go in the clear bag they will pack flat which I'm hoping will help. We'll do bar soap for the shower (have a few mini ones too for the loft apartment we're staying in) then I've some sample tubes of skincare from Clarins. Not much make up so hopefully with it all divided between x 3 clear bags it should all be good!

Just out of interest, we're flying with Jet2 and although I've double and triple checked I'm still paranoid I've read it wrong...does anyone know if I can definitely tKe a small handbag on board in addition to my cab8n bag? Because I'm tight I haven't paid for the "guaranteed keep your hand luggage in the cabin" thing - do they often make you put it in the hold? Not the end of the world I guess but I am looking forward to hopefully wafting past everyone waiting for their luggage on the carousel Smile

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 20/09/2019 21:02

Clothes wise I'm thinking jeans to travel in which I'll wear on one other day and then coming home (4 days). And top, jacket, trainers. Excellent idea on a scarf or too especially as they are so light.

Then x 4 more tops,
One other bottom, maybe a skirt.
A dress
Jim jams, hoodie and flip flops for the loft (flips invade the floor is f quite as naicely clean as mine, Grin)
Undies
2nd pair of shoes

Oh and brolly just in case.

Our plan is to make one long day of things (the will be DH and DD 11 with me) then head back home late afternoon /early evening for aperitvo near the flat and a light tea in the room so no evening bits required.

Run have a great time in Rome! Have you been before? It's such a beautiful city.

crummyusername · 20/09/2019 21:06

Pretty cold in Prague in November surely?

Add some thin thermal layers from Uniqlo or one of the outdoor shops?

herecomesthsun · 20/09/2019 21:13

I think bum bags don't count as luggage. And/or wear a jacket with lots of pockets and you can use that as extra space for bits and pieces.
