Capsule wardrobe Prague to fit in a bag 40x25x20 cms

Ryanair are a shower of shites and their additional costs for luggage are ridiculous. I'm going on a trip to Prague with friends this Nov and most of the group are up for a challenge of just taking the the maximum free size bag which is 40x25x20 cms. Now I love a capsule wardrobe but that is tiny and I never pack light. I'd normally need more space than that for underwear! Any ideas for a 3 night 4 day trip?

I was thinking layering jeans, trainers, top, long jumper, long scarf and coat for the plane. I've got wide leg trousers and a t shirt with flats. I have sample bottles for make up etc.

tellme we went years ago, just DH and me, but we are taking the DC with us (who, being 11 and 7 are smaller than me, and therefore their clothes will take up less space, so I am hoping to pilfer a bit of their luggage space!

Looking forward to it- I think its a great city for kids. Pasta, a gruesome history and ice cream!

GrinAgree! Have a fabulous time

I always take the world's smallest cross body bag, e.g. just big enough for small purse, phone and passport (as its the safest way of carrying important thing around in cities like Rome) - it can fit in the outer pocket of your backpack when needed for getting on the plane. I then put a smartish cloth bag in my backpack which I use for all those other stuff you want to carry around when there.

Excellent idea..also ideal for random bits you buy airside.

Gillybobs · 21/09/2019 09:02

If you buy anything at all in duty free you can also carry that on, it's an agreement they have at all airports I believe. I buy a lippy and ask for a big carrier then put my cross body bag inside with my toiletries/charger/undies in there.

It’s only 4 days
You need in total
2 pairs of trousers
4 pants
2 bras
4 pairs of socks
2 jumpers
4 under layers to put under the jumpers - to chose depending on how cold you tend to be
Pjs
Gloves/hat/scarf
A small toiletry bag
You will when leaving in the plane already
1 pair of trousers
1 jumper and layer
1 pant plus bra plus socks
Coat with hat and gloves/scarf
There isnt a lot left and will fit easily in a backpack.

By experience, I would second a very small handbag to put passport and wallet in.

MaudesMum · 21/09/2019 09:25

Forgot to add: I'd always aim to fit in another set of footwear - if you're walking around all day its really nice to be able to swap into another set occasionally, and the first set might also get wet if its pissing with rain. So, in this case, chunky boots for the plane, and trainers in your bag!

Standandwait · 21/09/2019 14:23

Some of you have surprising ideas about packing light. Three pairs of trousers for a four day stay, MaudesMum? I would wear a pair of black jeans and take no other bottoms. If it were summer I'd also only have the shoes on my feet, but since it's a wet time of year and a walking city, yeah, a second pair. Focus on tops. If you're partying with your friends you'll either be in crowds or sitting down, so bottoms just won't matter. But it will be damp enough (yes, I have been to Prague) that hand-washing won't dry, so socks and underwear for every day. And you want a coat, but you'll wear that -- make it a nice coat because it'll be in most of the pics!

Lucked · 21/09/2019 14:52

You need more than one pair of trousers because if it is pissing it down and your jeans get wet you would be miserable if you couldn’t change.

Yes to a nice coat! :)

hilaryguineapig · 21/09/2019 21:30

I have a Jean Muir coat.

The bag has arrived and it's a little bigger than I was expecting. I'm going to have a trial run tomorrow.

Op I would only take one pair of shoes for starters, I did hand luggage in the summer (not Ryanair tho, so bigger) and wore trainers and took flat sandals but in Nov you can get away with just really nice trainers or boots surely, just need to be comfy for walking all day. Don't take a handbag, maybe just a bumbag (trendy, sling over shoulder) to carry cash and passport in the day, that will roll up small. 1 pr pj's, 3 tops, 3 undies, 3 socks, maybe one pair of trousers and one other layer in the bag, wear jeans and at least two layers plus coat. Doable I reckon. No big jumpers tho.

runwithme · 21/09/2019 22:18

What bag did you get? I am in the market for one but cant find anything perfect!

goose1964 · 21/09/2019 23:01

As a Pragueaholic I can tell you that you won't need to dress up in the evenings unless you want to go clubbing. It could be bitterly cold though. If you don't want to carry too much I'd wear thermals under lighter clothes. I'd avoid anything that doesn't dry out easily as wearing wet clothes at sub zero isn't pleasant. However you've picked a good time to go as it won't be heaving with other tourists.

hilaryguineapig · 22/09/2019 00:16

I got the bag in the picture, it's called Manhattan something or other. Put 40x25x20 bag into Amazon for some ideas. I'm on my phone and can't do links at the mo.

Any suggestions about where to go, especially for a meal, would be fab.

I have thermals and won't be clubbing.

Go up in the funicular railway to the observation tower. There's a nice cafe there.
Kafka museum and modern art museum. Castle for changing of the guard.

Phimma · 22/09/2019 07:09

Paper knickers are great for travelling light, get them from Amazon. Wear layers and pack the minimum. Dont wear/take jeans, they are too bulky, get a lightweight midi skirt or chinos instead.

linentowel · 22/09/2019 07:36

Compression packing cubes are supposed to be good. I plan on getting some for our Paris trip in November.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/09/2019 08:07

Chinos unlikely to be warm enough for Prague in November.

Paper knickers!!! A few of pairs of knickers really don't take any room up.

Mamia15 · 22/09/2019 08:13

I do a lot of city breaks. Lots of thin layers, use hotel toiletries and minimal make up. Walking trainers are a must. Wear jeans/coat etc on flights to save space.

In winter it's cashmere jumpers with thermals and jeans.

People don't dress up for dinner so I never bother changing - I wear a lot of blacks/greys which helps.

Babdoc · 22/09/2019 08:25

Prague is very casual and you’ll be a tourist. You don’t need any make up or evening wear, and you can use the hotel toiletries - don’t waste space taking your own.
Comfy trainers are a must - the old town is very cobbled, and there’s a hill up to the castle and cathedral.
You don’t need pyjamas, you can sleep naked or in your underwear.
Just pack 4 pairs socks, 4 t shirts, 4 knickers, and wear a warm jumper, jeans and a coat. If the weather forecast is rain, pack a small telescopic umbrella to keep your only pair of jeans dry. Sorted!

Spam88 · 22/09/2019 08:34

It will be seriously cold, so you're mostly going to be in your coat anyway Grin

I go for wearing as much as possible (e.g. jeans, t-shirt/cami, chunkiest jumper I'm taking, obviously coat and scarf). I normally take a spare pair of jeans just in case. I'd just brave it with one pair of boots that can double up for day and evening - they can always be dried with a hairdryer if they get soaked (been there in Rome!). Or if you do want to take another pair then wear your chunkiest to fly and make sure you stuff the other pair full of underwear etc so you're not wasting any space. I'd take a clean top for each day (maybe one or two spares if I have the space) but would try to choose ones that will do day and evening. As others have said though, Prague isn't very dressy anyway.

ln1981 · 22/09/2019 08:44

Porks (near Charles Bridge) also good for food. Though it’s literally just pork on the menu! Second the cafe near the observation tower. Also if you fancy pizza/pasta, Kmotra is a good shout.

Nancyjuice7 · 22/09/2019 08:51

There is always a boots in the airport, might be more expensive but buy deodorant toiletries etc in there, and take a small cloth shopper bag folded up to put them in. As it says in the T&Cs anything bought in duty free / the airport doesn't count towards your luggage. People do this most often with baby milk and nappies for that exact reason x
