Do you have a "style"?

I tend to buy clothes I like without any real thought as to my style. I'm trying to be more thoughtful when it comes to shopping.
Just wondered if you had a style and if so what is it and how has it come about?

I'm a Goth who wears colour. My main wardrobe consists of A-line skirts, either knee length or ankle, there's no in between, and t-shirts, I have several band t-shirts and the rest are plain in jewel colours, and I wear long sleeved t-shirts in the winter. I also have some plaid shirts as an extra layer for the winter.
I also on several dresses, I have some more formal definitely Goth ones that I wear on special occasions (Punk Rave, H&R London), some floaty cotton ones that look almost Regency style, and some short velvet ones with flared sleeves.
Shoes are either ballet flats, sneakers, pointy toed ankle boots (i wear these the most) or combat boots.
I occasionally wear trousers, I have some flared ones that button up the front, these I wear with a black flared sleeve top and my frock coat.
And I love scarves! I have lots. Floaty ones for the summer and more heavy duty ones for the winter (and a really thick one in Hufflepuff colours my mum knitted for me.)

I don’t live in the UK, so I have two seasons to cater for only. Winter is a very loose term, and barely applies where I live. I wear jeans and a T-shirt. Usually ankle boots or (I’m very short.) All my jeans are high-waisted because I have no waist to speak of, being short-waisted and having carried twins. I have also lost 60kgnin the last few years. My tummy area is a train wreck. Summer where I live is hot and humid. I’m menopausal. I may just survive if nothing actually touches my body. Boho is a godsend. Unfortunately, wafty maxi dresses are a trip hazard for the likes of me (especially on escalators in lovely air-conditioned shops), so I rock an ill-fitting midi like nobody’s business! And hats. I look like a mushroom, but a much younger and less wrinklier mushroom than those going to my 30th high school reunion later this year and NO BOTOX!!!

Hmm, DH has previously said "40s starlet", my friend has said "luxe natural", I would say "drama queen" (I love colour and dramatic shapes. And metallics, shoulder pads, capes, strong lipstick). Am a size 8 hourglass, so dress to emphasise my waist but also keen to avoid looking too bombshell/come hither - I also have red hair - so the shapes are fitted but the materials are good quality and covering my arms and legs.

I typically wear (winter):

-Nipped waist skirt suits (vintage, 50s)
-Pencil skirt and slim fitting poloneck, flat or heeled boots
-Long sleeve, draped pencil dresses
-slim polo neck, mini skirt, ankle boots
-(evening): slinky lame vintage gowns

  • Tweed capes, velvet princess coats, straight wool/cashmere city coats

Summer:

  • slim printed vintage cotton or linen pencil dresses
  • silk or jersey blouse, tucked into a cotton or linen pencil skirt
  • draped crepe short-sleeve 40s dresses
  • denim high waisted pencil skirt, knotted shirt or blouse

How it came about: struggling to dress my figure and spending far too much time as an impressionable teen watching black and white movies. Also a growing love of mid-century vintage as it mostly actually fits without my having to take it in at the waist.

Much as I admire the head to toe vintage look on others, I keep hair and makeup natural and accessories modern to avoid looking too cartoony (I work in the City so have to tone it down).

I'm stripes. Jeans and stripes. Horizontal ones. Boring but it's me Grin

cheesenpickles · 28/08/2019 18:00

I've just overhauled my wardrobe and currently curating my style. I'd basically say I'm a Kate Moss wannabe with magpie eyes of Joe Lycett. Grin

Benjispruce · 28/08/2019 18:06

Summer- a bit boho(patterned trousers, loose shapes, fake tan, maxi dresses-khaki, white, black, odd pattern/animal print, metallics. always lips. always big shades)
Winter- rock chick (leather jacket, jeans, boots, shades if sunny, more often than not black)

Benjispruce · 28/08/2019 18:10

I'm late 40s, My teen DDs say I'm a glam mum but I think I'm quite paired down.

Heymummee · 28/08/2019 18:16

Apparently I do. My partner named it, but I don’t want to say what he called it in case I’m outed. I wear a lot of khaki, grey, black, layers, boots, skirts, tights, distressed jeans. Apparently I look like I’m ready to fight zombies. Whatever that means 🤦🏻‍♀️

moonpiggle · 28/08/2019 18:31

Summer - high waisted shorts/skirts with fitted tops. Midi dresses, long kimonos (zara/bloggers fave) Doc Marten sandals or ankle boots.
Winter - Apparently my style is 'This is England' ha il take that.

moonpiggle · 28/08/2019 18:55

Also love heavy jewellery. I think it makes my outfits. Wear alot of rings, have alot of ear piercings, septum and lip piercing too. Wear silver and rose gold. Love charity shops so alot of my clothes are quite random and quirky.

Dirtyjellycat · 28/08/2019 19:04

Old before my time frump Sad.

I really need to do something about this as I used to love clothes but since gaining lots of weight, I wear the same awful things all the time.

areyoubeingserviced · 28/08/2019 19:05

Trendy/ glam

moonpiggle · 28/08/2019 20:53

@Dirtyjellycat What sort of things do you wear?

CountFosco · 28/08/2019 21:25

I've just done 3 style quizzes and I am apparently chic, sexy or dramatic. So.... confused?

diet4eva · 28/08/2019 21:28

@Dirtyjellycat I'm withyou on that one. I need a serious kick up the arse

Dirtyjellycat · 28/08/2019 21:58

@moonpiggle
I wear loads of wide leg black trousers (I’m a pear shape) with baggy tops. I know they aren’t flattering and probably make me look even bigger than I am, but I’ve lost my confidence and feel like nothing else looks right. I’m losing weight (very slowly) and I’m hoping that will give help me push in the right direction.

Sorry everyone, I didn’t mean to drag the thread down!

@diet4eva maybe we need a kick up the arse thread! I’m thinking of getting colours done as I wonder if that might give me a boost and help me to be more discerning.

HangryPants · 28/08/2019 22:06

Skinny jeans for casual or wide leg trousers for work. Layered, long tops such as long-sleeved top and cardigan, plus scarf. I do this in either naturals or jewels.

Complete change from my size 10 skinnies and superdry tees, but it’s what my menopausal body demanded. Gave me back my confidence.

ChampagneCommunist · 28/08/2019 22:09

Nautical short-arse

moonpiggle · 28/08/2019 23:23

@Dirtyjellycat Wide leg trousers here too I think they are quite forgiving! I feel quite barrel shaped at the moment but do wear more fitted tops to try and balance myself out iykwim! Cant go wrong with shirt dresses or wrap dresses x

Chocolate35 · 28/08/2019 23:29

I really don’t have a style ☹️ Leggings or jeans and a loose vest to cover the saggy body underneath it.

LoonyLunaLoo · 28/08/2019 23:39

I think my style is early-2000s-skater-girl-still-thinks-I’m-a-teenager 😂.

Basically summer: short shorts, short neon vest top, Vans trainers, sport socks. Non of those weird hidden socks for me!
Winter: skinny jeans, hoodie, Vans high tops ( waiting for the comeback of flares that drag on the ground and soak up water 😂)

Going out: short black dress, silver Vans ( I do own heels but this is my ideal outfit)

Work: skinny trousers (basically jeans that I can get away with!), jumper, black Vans.

Obviously thick black eye liner is a must!

SinglePringle · 28/08/2019 23:51

Jeans, heels and sequins for daytime. Links to the new white Zara sequin top have been sent to me by 4 separate friends! Currently wearing a lot of silk combat trousers and silk shell tops with kitten heels or Gucci backless loafers. I’ll add an oversized blazer as the weather turns.

I’m classic with a twist. Structures, tailored and then something ‘off’ to change it up. If my hair is ultra smooth, my clothes will be slightly more sexy. Sexy hair? More tailored clothing. I follow fashion but not slavishly.

Lots of simple, white linen tops at weekend but also Nike hi-tops... and I fucking love heels and hoop earrings.

Am 49.
