Do you have a "style"?

I tend to buy clothes I like without any real thought as to my style. I'm trying to be more thoughtful when it comes to shopping.
Just wondered if you had a style and if so what is it and how has it come about?

My style tends to be classic/casual. I wear a lot of black but add accessories. I like scarves and tend to splurge on them. I also love shoes and handbags. My jewellery tends to be quirky or statement.

I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I focus on skincare. I like to feel groomed but I’m not that fashionable and feel quite awkward when I wear something out of my comfort zone. I wish I could be more stylish!

Colleagues are also surprised if they see me out of work - I have a tattoo sleeve I keep covered in a professional environment.

Writersblock2 · 30/08/2019 08:33

Btw, love this thread!

Itsfineactually · 30/08/2019 08:50

I’m actually enjoying this thread!!

I have no style what so ever... typical days is gap style straight jeans and a plain vest with a fitted cardy. Then always an outdoorsy fleece and outdoors approach shoes.

I spend a lot of money on decent expensive outdoorsy kit as I work outside.

I’m now off to pinterest to search all these styles people have mentioned

Itsfineactually · 30/08/2019 08:56

@LoonyLunaLoo do you mind if I ask how old you are? I’m 35 and was a teen during the 2000 skater girl era, I’d love to dress like this but feel too old Blush

hazeyjane · 30/08/2019 08:57

My style seems to have come from falling into a wardrobe and crawling out with whatever fits me.

championquartz · 30/08/2019 09:10

This thread has made me think.

Have I a style? I suppose I must but I would find it hard to categorize. Kind of annoying because I spend flipping ages thinking about what to wear and what to buy and I still think I often look just about ok.

If you open my wardrobe, there’s a clear colour theme. A mix of blues, greys, navy, white and the odd bit of pink. Bit of black too. Not much pattern. Occasional dot or stripe.

Style? Modern classic with a difference/edge? I do follow trends. Clean cuts for my shape. I have a path worn to my alterations woman. I alter a lot for fit. Sleeves to the right length, trouser and skirt waists, pockets etc. I sound a little obsessive! But I need to be comfortable and able to forget what I’m wearing iykwim, yet look a bit ‘dressed’.

Can I ask you @SequinnedSlippers, why aren’t you buying any more wool? Is there an ethical reason? I get the cashmere but regular wool?

Spoonsmum · 30/08/2019 09:14

I would say I don’t have a style at all. Every now and then I have a ‘moment’ and decide I hate all my clothes (mostly black, jeans, vests, T-shirt’s - nothing I would describe as close to fashion or a style. It’s just meeehhhhh) and then I’ll buy a few things to ‘shake it up’ which I inevitably hate, never wear (“eurgh this makes my belly look awful” being the main reason) and then end up shipping off to charity shops. I wish I had a style that wasn’t “boring primark basic crap”

ParmesanOfVirtue · 30/08/2019 09:20

I think I'm a minimalist a la Steve Jobs - have dozens of identical plain black t shirts. The only thing I vary is footwear and jewellery and makeup/ hair (curly / straight).

Footwear is flats or sandals in summer, trainers in cooler weather, Chelsea boots in winter.

Plus a selection from my Monica Vinader crazy coloured earrings collection.

Hair is mad disheveled beachy lob.

ParmesanOfVirtue · 30/08/2019 09:22

Oh I play with belts too, have several coloured / textured ones.

Bottom half is always black jeans in case the pp made it should like my bottom half was naked.

small2018 · 30/08/2019 09:40

Classic with a nod to the latest trends!

MeganTheVegan · 30/08/2019 09:44

Would love to see some pics, if anyone is brave enough to share.

My style is currently Bag Lady Chic, although not by choice. Trying to save up some money for some new clothes.

Ounce · 30/08/2019 09:49

Posh bloke.

Like a cross between Tilda Swinton and John le Mesurier.

Elllllle · 30/08/2019 09:57

I'm just not sure how it's "fun" I suppose, managedmis. I grew up in the 90s when it was 'on point' to be outside a category or otherwise nothing like you were supposed to be. I just find it a bit twee... a whole lot of women claiming to be "boho" or "preppy" or "breton and skinny jeans" or "sexy corporate" or whatever. Why? It makes me cringe. I'll migrate back to the french (aka independent) style thread, don't worry.

Benjispruce · 30/08/2019 10:03

Ellle I have never tried to define my style before. I took this thread in a lighthearted way. I don’t seriously think I have a ‘look’ , I had a laugh trying to describe how others see me. If you don’t like it, why keep posting?

Spoonsmum · 30/08/2019 10:17

I wish I had the style of Helena Bonham Carter. That woman is amazing. I can only IMAGINE the reception if I did it 🤣

HippyChickMama · 30/08/2019 10:18

'Mad Art Teacher' just about sums up my style. In the Winter I wear army surplus boots or dm's with leggings or skinny jeans and long jumpers. In Summer harem pants or long Indian cotton maxi dresses or skirts with Birkenstock's or clogs. Work wear (academic) is Tattopani skirts or dresses with plain vest tops and cardigans with ankle boots and the occasional scarf and bright coloured tights. 12 year old ds did ask me once if I realised I dress like Professor Trelawney!

AuntieMarys · 30/08/2019 10:20

I like an Audrey Hepburn cigarette trouser/ballet pump vibe.

gotmychocolateimgood · 30/08/2019 10:22

I suppose Hush style but cheaper... Denim shorts, star print tees, bretons, dungarees, saltwater sandals. I don't actually own any Hush clothes but like the laid back casual style.

SequinnedSlippers · 30/08/2019 11:01

@championquartz it’s been kind of a gradual thing.

Animal welfare is part of it. I’m not comfortable with things like mule-sing- which can be avoided to an extent because e.g. some merino is specifically no mulesing, and I know there are ethical suppliers like Izzy Lane.

Some of it has been around companies changing their ethos a bit. Couple of companies I used to use have changed hands/moved production and I’m not so comfortable with them

Some of it is just practical. We stayed for a spell in a place with a clothes moth problem. Storage was a huge faff, so I didn’t buy anything new and didn’t wear it much. We moved to somewhere without a moth problem a while back, and I thought I’d start wearing/buying stuff again. But haven’t really. So realised I couldn’t have missed it.

Downunderduchess · 30/08/2019 11:14

Boho luxe... beautiful dresses, dangly earrings, gold & silver bangles and I love flat shoes and expensive bags. Here is a recent purchase, can't wait to wear it.

foxtiger · 30/08/2019 12:23

I am actively trying to make "retro ladylike" (mostly 30s-40s influenced) my style at the moment. My work look is mainly longish (but not maxi) dresses, usually with some kind of flower print, or a shirt and a pencil skirt, sometimes with short, fitted cardigans. Shoes are low-medium heels and preferably Mary Jane style although I'll wear ballet flats when the colour is the most suitable for that dress. In the winter I plan to wear "granny boots" and maybe a cloche or beret. That's not my off-duty style, which is usually dictated by the activity I'm doing and might be jeans and hoodie, leggings and t-shirt or a colourful, informal dress over leggings.

DarkMutterings · 30/08/2019 13:20

@Downunderduchess that dress is utterly fabulous and I would look utterly crap in it! Grin

LaVieilleHarpie · 30/08/2019 16:29

Basic bitch from Instagram.

Flurgle · 30/08/2019 16:38

Currently sweaty menopausally scruffy.
Would like to be effortlessly boho but being short and dumpy is hindering me!

ladybee28 · 30/08/2019 16:48

Strong, clean lines, simple colour palette, with a surprise twist wherever I can get it in....

I tend to wear quite muted colours and clean lines, because then whatever 'twist' I've added, whether it's a colour pop, weird accessory or mad pattern stands out more.

I err on the side of masculine looks clothingwise, as with my blonde curly hair and blue eyes, anything too boho makes me look like a birthday cake.

My latest go-to has been super-white NIKE Air Force Ones, light blue tapered boyfriend jeans rolled up to mid-ankle, a sharp white shirt with a long (down to mid-calf) grey knit cardi over the top, bright pink lip and a wide brim fedora hat.

I also love a bow tie.

My aunt also once advised me to always mix 'one high, one low' - so if you're wearing one thing that's very casual, add in one thing that's very 'expensive'-looking. Jeans and a tee with pearl earrings, for example, or a beautiful dress with trainers.

That piece of advice really stuck, and it means I always feel like I've got SOMETHING interesting to my look, even if it's only tiny.
