Do you have a "style"?

I tend to buy clothes I like without any real thought as to my style. I'm trying to be more thoughtful when it comes to shopping.
Just wondered if you had a style and if so what is it and how has it come about?

I still what I wore in my 20s. Shelltoe trainers, maharishi trousers, retro adidas tops, carpenter jeans, dungarees and more sweatshirts than necessary Grin

I have always loved clothes, my foremothers did too and church was a subdued fashion parade
I worked in a boutique when I was 13 years old at the beginning of the 70s until I left to go university
I loved it, clothes would be on Top of the Pops one Thursday then on our rails by the following week.
I have worn every style you can imagine from shirtwaisters to knickerbockers, kaftans and Afghan coat to hot pants and leather trousers
I found my own true style when I gave up buying fast fashion as an attempt to lead a less materialistic life
I wear
Summer
Linen and Cotton sleeveless tunics and dresses, skirts and trousers, wide legged and maybe cropped.
Cotton and/or cord wide tops
Harem trousers
Long waistcoats in natural materials
A very layered look with DrMarten shoes and sandals
I use Scaramamga satchels of various sizes and/or a rucksack

This look aren’t always practical as I garden and look after small children so I also wear T-shirt’s and long sleeve Tees, (always plain or maybe a shirt though large breasts makes this difficult) with cotton knee length skirts or culottes and a cardigan or linen jacket, White Stuff, Fat Face style.

Winter
Thicker version of the skirt-Tee combination, cord velvet skirts and wider leg trousers with jumper or cardigan
Layers again with long cord, linen or velvet skirts, tunics and dresses

I adore coats and jackets and struggle to resist any by Bohemia

I always wear scarves and gloves on cold days and love opaque tights and chunky DM boots

Colours, black, green, purple, navy
I rarely wear patterns though lately I have been wearing floral etc skirts.
I can’t stand patterns in my eye line.

I have attached pictures, I wear a budget, eBay and charity shop version of that look Grin

A mish mash of goth/pin-up/alternative style. Lots of leopard print, Wednesday addams dresses, boots, hair dye, Pointy nails, piercings etc. Oh and winged eyeliner. Probably should grow up but I don't want to!

dayslikethese1 · 30/08/2019 20:39

I like to be a bit scruffy. Always wear converse knock-offs in various colours (have white, silver, purple and pink ones currently), skinny or slim mom jeans and loose t-shirts or thin sweatshirts. Or skater style dresses with long cardigan. I don't like wooly things, shiny/embellished things or anything too long or patterned or frilly. I am probably very boring Grin

@ladybee28

My aunt also once advised me to always mix 'one high, one low' - so if you're wearing one thing that's very casual, add in one thing that's very 'expensive'-looking.

Love that advice. Thanks!

Itsfineactually · 31/08/2019 09:37

I’d love to give steam punk a go 😀

AuntieMarys · 31/08/2019 09:54

Me too itsfineactually

hippychickmama Grin I work in an language department. This is us Grin

I love wearing TOAST dresses - mostly 2nd hand - or urban outfitter / and other stories type midi dresses, denim, plain, flowery. Wide leg trousers with silk blouses or little stripy tops. Birkenstocks or saltwater sandals.

When not working - am quite into mom jeans, currently wearing an acid wash ( that I swear i said I would never wear again when I was in my late teens) pair turned up at the bottom with a very cute and very old TOAST narrow striped red t shirt with flip flops. Love this style, so flattering. Dungarees, old T shirts, skinnies in winter or mom jeans with TOAST jumpers and big boots.

I have a beautiful grey Whistles winter coat that comes out each winter and a slightly lighter one from COS.

Am 46 and I'm loving this thread too.

Boho in spring and summer.

Kind of French-inspired with a touch of Seventies-boho in autumn and winter.

Pinkarsedfly · 31/08/2019 10:14

Sorry, how it came about.

A mixture of things: never quite growing out of my Nineties student phase.
Loving the Annie Hall/Rebecca from This Is Us aesthetic.
Loving natural fibres and being comfy.
Doing a variety of style quizzes etc.
Just being very into clothes and instinctively knowing what suits me after A LOT of mistakes.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/08/2019 10:23

I never wear patterns,I favour bright plain tops/dresses.Id say sexy casual as I like tight fitting clothes but wear flats/trainers,never heels as I'm 5 ft 10.

happytobemrsg · 31/08/2019 11:10

I’m still working on my “style”. I have a clear colour palette (neutrals: black, dark grey, beige, browns, cream; accents in khaki/moss, mustard, gold). My evolving style seems to have a sort of &Other Stories vibe - long flowy patterned dresses with boots, skinny treggings/jeans with oversized jumpers.

Sagradafamiliar · 31/08/2019 11:26

Basic Parisienne walking stereotype but have been described as 'rock chick' (cringe) several times, probably more down to my makeup than anything else. I'd never be dressed without full-on feline eyeliner.

ReggaetonLente · 31/08/2019 12:49

Hmm. My style has changed post-baby, but in lots of ways I feel more myself than ever. I spend far less on clothes now (maternity pay) and where I used to love being dressed in the latest trends, all ASOS, Topshop, Zara etc., now I care far more about ethical clothing and stuff that's made to last. So Lucy & Yak dungarees, vintage t shirts, cotton smock dresses and jumpsuits and trainers.

I try and avoid all polyester and only buy new clothes I can breastfeed in and crawl about on the floor in. I'm enjoying shopping from my wardrobe and seeing what I can pick up second hand.

So I would say now my style is - young, bright, ethical, sustainable. And I think I look cool, but that is probably subjective 😁

championquartz · 31/08/2019 21:04

@SequinnedSlippers I feel very ignorant but I hadn’t known mulesing was a thing and I’m Shock.

Is there any wool that’s more ethical?

YouJustDoYou · 31/08/2019 21:06

"old fashioned cut", ie, 40's style of cut of dresses, because it suits my figure. Modern cuts and fabrics just don't sit right on me at all - I like the classics. I don;t mind looking a bid fuddyduddy, it fits well, so, meh.

Kenworthington · 31/08/2019 21:10

Edgy art teacher

SequinnedSlippers · 31/08/2019 21:56

@championquartz Some manufacturer’s commit to only using wool that’s non-mulesing. Finisterre is the one I can remember off the top of my head Finisterre on why they use wool and what wool they use

Found an article about it looks like Fjallraven and Howies do too. Finisterre and Fjallraven are developing their own flocks.

Izzy Lane has a “no kill” flock.

Basically it comes down to checking the brand’s policy on wool (if they have one). In my experience the one’s who care about this kind of thing make it fairly clear on their website.

CountFosco · 31/08/2019 22:25

I grew up on a sheep farm in the UK and had never heard of mulesing (sheep here historically were dipped to protect from parasites but that isn't done any more either). All the references I can find about it are Australian so I think it's a problem specific to that country (where due to the very large flocks they have always had lower welfare standards).

championquartz · 31/08/2019 23:15

Thanks @SequinnedSlippers and thanks for the links.
I need wool for winter - I get cold. Buy less buy better gets more relevant every day.

championquartz · 31/08/2019 23:16

@CountFosco so maybe buying UK/European wool is ok?

dudsville · 01/09/2019 04:57

I'm fairly librarian/professor, complete with the thick specs and anthracite hair!

Downunderduchess · 01/09/2019 05:46

@DarkMutterings ... it's a beautiful dress,

Downunderduchess · 01/09/2019 05:49

And... meant to say, I think it would suit a variety of shapes etc. I'm planning on wearing it to an outdoor wedding. I've just ordered gold flats & a gold Clutch from Asos to go with it!

CustardCreamLover · 01/09/2019 05:52

I'm 31 and I wear jeans and t-shirts or jumpers in the winter and shirts and t shirts in the summer!

I'd love to be more stylish but I've just become a mum and my job doesn't require formal clothes so I think I'm probably stuck with casual for the foreseeable future!
