Can you help me accessorise this Toast dress for a wedding?

Just 3 weeks until my sister's wedding and I have this morning found the dress for me. Waking up in a panic can end! However, I'd love a bit of help to find the bits and pieces to go with it, if anyone feels inspired?

So, background - its my little sister's wedding, mid September at a rather cool central London venue. Wear what you please, but I'm giving a reading and we lost our (very chic) Mum just a year ago, so I want to look my best for my sister on what's going to be a very bittersweet day.
Me, I'm nowhere near as waify as the model below (16) and a bit of a scruff in real life, whereas my sister is skinny and groomed. I'm short too (5'2") and have shoulder length dark curly hair. At the moment, I can't think beyond it being an excuse to get a new pair of Birks.
Here's the dress - looks much nicer in real life, didn't look at it twice on the website, but I feel fabulous in it (and I bought it in a 14!)

Tan heeled boots and the insect clutch would be a big yes for me!!!!

Elllllle · 23/08/2019 09:56

the colour is heroine. I stopped someone in the street to ask (and then promptly bought) because it looked so incredible. I have heroine and the peach one (which DH adores)

the UK is the only country where black is considered a cop out. Fuschia floral bodycons all the way Grin

NoBaggyPants · 23/08/2019 09:58

Sorry OP it looks like a sack. And that's not you, you have a great figure, but it swamps you. I think you'll regret it when you see the pictures afterwards.

Just to say folks, I'm so grateful for all this advice and it's made me a little teary. I have some very lovely friends, but none that I'd ask about this sort of stuff really. DM and I always used lust after lovely things and put outfits together (she was so chic and stylish, and looked amazing in a MaxMara dress at my wedding).Apologies for the mushy moment, but you're all helping to fill a significant gap right now. "the UK is the only country where black is considered a cop out. Fuschia floral bodycons all the way"

I've never worn fuschia in my life, but black shoes with that dress will look like a cop out - as in "I've no idea what to wear with this but black goes everything, doesn't it?"

(No, it doesn't, btw)

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 23/08/2019 10:11

@SinglePringle's suggestion is great.

Slurpy · 23/08/2019 10:16

Love those earrings @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Also really like that lipstick @Elllllle

Someone asked about my skin tone - I guess it's sort of pale olive, like someone from the Med who's been inside for months Smile

I'm willing to attempt a block heel, and quite like the idea of tan so far. More likely to be worn again than orange, but I will search orange out too. As much as I love brogues, I think they might be a touch too dress down. I like the idea of an ankle boot, but never worn them with a dress before. Need to hit the shoe shops don't I?

OP, the dress is absolutely perfect for you. Take no notice of the few people on here who are saying that it's not! There isn't a dress in the world that everyone is going to like.

I'm another who thinks you ought to go with orange shoes or boots, and the metallic cuff is a good idea. Yes, try an orange lipstick, and see if it looks good on you.

I love the insect bag. That's the sort of thing I would do - add a bit of humour by playing up the spider's web-type print of the dress.

What I think would really weddingify this outfit is if you tie your hair back or put it up. You need it away from your neck, in my opinion.

TinyMystery · 23/08/2019 10:22

Omg I love that dress and that bag is incredible, please buy it! (If I wasn’t quite poor, with absolutely no reason to own a bag like that, I’d be after one).

Elllllle · 23/08/2019 10:23

Black is not a cop out. But is quoted as such on mumsnet so often that it's ridiculous! Black is a neutral. But proceed with your metallic sandals, if you want Greebol.

allezallezallez · 23/08/2019 10:26

Is the offer of makeup artist still open OP? If so they will have lots of lipstick colour options you can try on the day. They can blend something to get the right shade for you.

I agree with hair up and statement earrings.
The dress is lovely on you.

allezallezallez · 23/08/2019 10:30

Also love the bag but might make shoes more tricky. Wouldn’t wear orange shoes with the insect bag I don’t think.

Almahart · 23/08/2019 10:31

Tan boots and insect bag would be great

Definitely hair up

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/08/2019 10:33

I haven't suggested metallic sandals, I think you have mistaken me for someone else, @Elllllle.

Slurpy · 23/08/2019 10:36

I've just ordered some orange block heels to try out - thanks @SinglePringle - they didn't have quite the one you posted, but they did have a similar pair with a closed heel, which are wide fit and only 11 quid. I'll still pursue other options though.

Will have a word with my sister about the makeup artist (think she did hair too and I like the idea of doing something with it). Might be money well spent.

Serious bag envy. I need to invest in a few accessories I think

hopeishere · 23/08/2019 10:47

I've bought it!! So easily influenced!!!

I think people think all weddings are the same and everyone is wearing stuff like the pic!

SinglePringle · 23/08/2019 10:47

Pleasure OP! Hope you have a fabulous day at the wedding (think your bag will look great too).

medb22 · 23/08/2019 10:56

That bag is AMAZING. Neutral shoes with that bag: tan/brown heels of some kind. A boot/sandal hybrid, maybe? Like this: www.aldoshoes.com/ie/en_IE/women/footwear/heels/block-heels/Elalyan-Brown/p/12660129. I'm a similar height to you, and find that sometimes ankle boots cut me legs off oddly with dresses - though I am not slim of ankle, tbh. I like the style of these ones because they dip slightly at the front. Though if you are looking for something you'll wear on other occasions, they might not suit.

The print of the dress is fabulous and now I feel like I must also buy it.

Elllllle · 23/08/2019 11:03

But @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal you didnt suggest anything else. Just that black was a cop out!

BikeRunSki · 23/08/2019 11:22

I have been looking at that dress on the Toast website. I’m about -£1000 doe. 3 days after payday (and 5 weeks into school holidays), and love it more than ever now.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/08/2019 11:25

I did, actually, @Elllllle. I said if it wear me I'd wear it with the orange chunky heeled shoes honeycrumpet posted about three posts in. With hair up and huge earrings.

However, if OP is going to get the orange insect clutch she posted - and I hope she does, as it's fabulous - then I wouldn't go for orange shoes as well, but probably a deep, warm tan colour with a wedge or chunky heel. I think the volume of the dress needs to be balanced with a solid heel - IMO, spindly heels would look wrong, and flats would do nothing for the dress.

Aaaaaanyway, all of this is only my opinion, YMMV. OP, do come back and tell us what you decide on in the end. I hope you have a wonderful time at the wedding - I'm sure your mum will be very proud of both you and your sister. Smile

Elllllle · 23/08/2019 11:30

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I think I have to say that your style most definitely not my (not British!) style but we agree that OP's mum would be proud of her in that dress.
