Can you help me accessorise this Toast dress for a wedding?

Just 3 weeks until my sister's wedding and I have this morning found the dress for me. Waking up in a panic can end! However, I'd love a bit of help to find the bits and pieces to go with it, if anyone feels inspired?

So, background - its my little sister's wedding, mid September at a rather cool central London venue. Wear what you please, but I'm giving a reading and we lost our (very chic) Mum just a year ago, so I want to look my best for my sister on what's going to be a very bittersweet day.
Me, I'm nowhere near as waify as the model below (16) and a bit of a scruff in real life, whereas my sister is skinny and groomed. I'm short too (5'2") and have shoulder length dark curly hair. At the moment, I can't think beyond it being an excuse to get a new pair of Birks.
Here's the dress - looks much nicer in real life, didn't look at it twice on the website, but I feel fabulous in it (and I bought it in a 14!)

Nothing to add except that i love love love that dress!

thedevilinablackdress · 22/08/2019 17:04

Orange shoes a PP posted or something similar, bright, angular. Fab dress.
Wish I'd worn something like that to my sister's recent wedding and not a generic LK Bennett number (so not me).

Musicforsnorks · 22/08/2019 17:05

I hate the gold shoes too they would clash oddly with that type of dress.
I sec0nd something in maybe tan, brogue-ish. Im not a clog fan but i can see them working, quite stylish.

Nice to see someone not wishing to look like a bland clone at a wedding. Hope you enjoy the day😀

nooddsocksforme · 22/08/2019 18:10

I would go with navy boots www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/bracknell-ankle-boots-navy/sty-a0501-nav?cat=C1_S2_G11
And an orange bag www.jigsaw-online.com/product/Adeline-Book-Crossbody-Bag/J40094_OR000
They have orange shoes in jigsaw but wouldn’t match bag and shoes www.jigsaw-online.com/product/Arla-Soft-Square-Flat/J40008_OR000 they are very flat

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 22/08/2019 18:13

So sorry - just saw this! Glad imperfect found the shoe link to post.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2019 18:15

Sorry about your Mum OP Flowers

But that dress isn’t appropriate for any wedding, even a chic London venue one. Being shorter it must come down to your ankles and totally drown you?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/08/2019 18:27

The OP loves the dress and presumably knows her sister well enough to know if the dress is 'appropriate' or not! And who cares if she's short? Short people are allowed to wear long dresses if they want to!

nooddsocksforme · 22/08/2019 18:31

It’s a lovely dress. I chose long floaty dresses for the last 2 weddings I attended and felt much more comfortable in them than a previous “typical weddingy “ fitted dress.

daphine2004 · 22/08/2019 18:47

I know other posters have said no necklace, but I think I’d go with a long gold necklace or one of those ones which is really fine and shorter - Claudia Winkleman wore a beautiful necklace regularly on strictly. It was dainty, classy and worked with some of her looks. I think a touch of something which catches the light would be lovely.

I also think that you can do a lot of ‘accessorising’ by having amazing hair and make up. You could easily complement the colour palette with eyeshadow.

I’m unsure on shoes as I think I would have to see the dress length on you.

I really like the dress.

peachgreen · 22/08/2019 19:01

That dress is gorgeous. You do need to dress it up a bit for a wedding (not a bad thing, it's very cool) so I would definitely go for heels - block heels are a perfect compromise. Loads of good suggestions in here. Would love to see the finished outfit when you're done.

PinkysEars · 22/08/2019 19:03

Just on the subject of length: Toast explain that they cut for an average height woman (I think they say 5' 5"), so the dress on the model is a sample, and her height is immaterial.

I know that to my cost for the opposite reason: things are often much shorter than I would like them to be, as I'm a few inches taller.

So everyone worrying about it flapping round the OPs ankles can be reassured. Grin

PinkysEars · 22/08/2019 19:04

Ps I love the dress and think it's gorgeous for your sister's wedding.

BackforGood · 22/08/2019 20:02

So sorry about your Mum, OP. It will be an emotional day for you all Flowers

However, I agree with ChocolateFudge (on P1) and Shirley (on this page) - it doesn't say 'wedding' to me at all.

Another wondering if you can tell us how long it is on you ? Will make a difference to the shoes perhaps.

Floisme · 22/08/2019 20:28

I think it’s a lovely dress and, assuming it’s in a decent fabric (and Toast usually is) it sounds just right for the occasion you’ve described. I think I’d keep it simple and chic and not try and dress it up too much - maybe a gold or bronze cuff as others have suggested. I’m not very adventurous about shoes myself so I’m a bit short of ideas there but I think you’ve got some good ones.

And I don’t understand this idea that you can’t wear a longer length if you’re short. How did they all manage before the 20th century? Yes you have to experiment to find the length and proportions that work best but surely everyone has to do that regardless of height? I’m 5’3 and I think my best length is just above my ankles - much better on me than mid calf.

Slurpy · 22/08/2019 20:31

Hi again all,

Thanks for all your replies - I've been out for the afternoon, but been having a sneaky look on my phone.

I'm really glad that most like the dress - about half my wardrobe is Toast, but this is the first thing I've ever paid full price for (I live a 5 min walk from the original Toast shop, in the land of the long gone and much missed village hall sales - I've done well over the years!).

I went in to try a completely different dress on, and had to be
persuaded by the Toast ladies to try this one on and they were right. It looks completely different on, and there's far more shape to it than the pics of the model suggest.

I really don't want a typical wedding look, I don't feel comfortable dressed like that. I do want to look good, look like I've made an effort, and feel good too, and I do in this dress.

In regards to length - I'd put this firmly as a midi dress. It's mid calf on me at the front, and the back dips slightly. When the light is better, and my stomach isn't groaning with pizza I'll post a pic of me in it.

So far, I'm love the idea of a rose gold or bronze cuff (and I have one, courtesy of an aforementioned Toast village hall sale) and a woven bag (which I don't have). Beads are my absolute weakness, so I'll have to experiment to work out whether to wear something around my neck or not.

Shoes wise, man, I'm crap in heels, but maybe I need to bite that bullet to make the whole thing work (and Remus, I am a size 6!). Will head to the big city and do some shoe shopping soon.

Thanks again all. Pic to follow tomorrow, promise!

It’s a gorgeous dress

sonjadog · 22/08/2019 20:51

I think the dress is beautiful. It would be helpful to see it on you to give suggestions on how to style it. I think I would go for picking out one of the brighter colours in it and having heels and accessories in that colour.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/08/2019 21:01

Right, it's not my style, but I'm assuming it is yours and you know your sister's wedding style better than we would.

I'd wear it with the orange chunky heeled shoes honeycrumpet posted about 3 posts in; and I'd put my hair up and wear huge earrings.

SD1978 · 22/08/2019 21:04

Similar side to you- really want to see this on you so I can look (buy) it tomorrow. Also scruffy- no useful suggestions. Rossi!

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 22/08/2019 21:20

Oh, this is so interesting! I've never looked at Toast before, but I LOVE that fabric the dress you've picked is made from so much, OP, that I've been checking it out. Trouble is, I'm such a different shape to the models, and the styling is so different to what I would choose, it makes it hard to picture how the clothes would work for me. There's a lot that I like though.

OP, if it was me, I'd go for chunky gold earrings and bangle, gold flats, no necklace.

Slurpy · 22/08/2019 21:40

@QuantumWeatherButterfly - I know what you mean about the model and the styling. It honestly looks like a completely different dress on me. As much as I'd love to look like the model, she's so tiny that you can't really see the cut of the dress. There's a lovely seam at the back that pulls it in a bit and shapes the waist, and boobs improve the front too. Toast seem to have put chunky boots with everything this year too! It's a lovely quality fabric too (as is par for the course for Toast).

justchecking1 · 22/08/2019 21:46

@Slurpy any chance of a pic of you wearing the dress? I really like it but I find it hard to judge how nice Toast dresses are until I see them on real people rather than the very androgynous models. I'm quite curvy and some look great, some just look like sacks on me

CountFosco · 22/08/2019 21:46

Love the idea of orange shoes but don't wear heels if you don't like them.

These orange slingbacks are nice but only size 3. I feel likeit's the kind of thing Boden might do but I can't find flats, just heels.

Alternatively I love these navy derbys but you'd definitely need your copper cuff then.

Slurpy · 22/08/2019 22:03

@justchecking1 - pic coming up in the morning, I promise. Completely agree though, so hard to know from the models they choose. I was pleasantly surprised by 3 dresses that I tried on today though - all looked much nicer than I expected... this was a contender before I tried the navy/orange one, and this hideously expensive one looked lovely on, but was, well, hideously expensive and a bit too muted colour-wise.
Their sizing is also all over the shop, but often in a good way Grin

Slurpy · 22/08/2019 22:06

@CountFosco - I do love those navy derbys and have a similar, but not quite so nice pair. Think I'd probably be wise choosing a lady shoe though Grin
