Can you help me accessorise this Toast dress for a wedding?

Just 3 weeks until my sister's wedding and I have this morning found the dress for me. Waking up in a panic can end! However, I'd love a bit of help to find the bits and pieces to go with it, if anyone feels inspired?

So, background - its my little sister's wedding, mid September at a rather cool central London venue. Wear what you please, but I'm giving a reading and we lost our (very chic) Mum just a year ago, so I want to look my best for my sister on what's going to be a very bittersweet day.
Me, I'm nowhere near as waify as the model below (16) and a bit of a scruff in real life, whereas my sister is skinny and groomed. I'm short too (5'2") and have shoulder length dark curly hair. At the moment, I can't think beyond it being an excuse to get a new pair of Birks.
Here's the dress - looks much nicer in real life, didn't look at it twice on the website, but I feel fabulous in it (and I bought it in a 14!)

Yes to photo, please. I really like the dress and would consider ordering it myself, but I really need to see it on someone with definite boobs and hips. So I would like to see you in it for my own benefit!

GCAcademic · 23/08/2019 08:05

OP - I tried that Ikat belted dress on, but it looked awful on me, the skirt was like a tent. I was simultaneously disappointed (as I’d been lusting over it for weeks) and relieved (as it is so bloody expensive). I’ve just ordered your dress to try on, and am the same size as you and very curvy, so interested to see your photo.

Slurpy · 23/08/2019 08:58

Ok, here goes... (and I'd rather not be told that it looks crap on me, please)

For those thinking of ordering it, just note that I sized down (although the slip that comes with it is too tight over my boobs - but I can buy another). There's still plenty of room in the dress, and I'm not sure how a size up would look...

It's gorgeous. Is it cotton? I got two toast dresses recently and just threw the slips away!!

So tempted to get it...

BebeGlazer · 23/08/2019 09:05

It’s looks great on you OP! Really lovely. I’m a similar size, and may have to get one myself!

Slurpy · 23/08/2019 09:08

@hopeishere - it's viscose, but has a really nice weight and drape to the fabric

That looks great! Thanks for posting the photo. It really gave me a much better idea of how the dress looks that on the model in the photo.

Intheshadeoftrees · 23/08/2019 09:20

I Love it, it looks fantastic !

What sort of lipstick if any are you planning on wearing?

Almahart · 23/08/2019 09:25

It looks great on you! I love it. And it is absolutely right for the sort of wedding you describe (I’ve been to lots like that)

Slurpy · 23/08/2019 09:25

@Intheshadeoftrees - no lipstick plans yet, though someone upthread suggested a bright orange. Any thoughts? I've become a bit of a lipstick wimp over the years, which is silly as my lips are probably my best feature!

ThatCurlyGirl · 23/08/2019 09:27

I think an orange clutch will help the detail of the dress pop a bit more Smile

Intheshadeoftrees · 23/08/2019 09:33

I'd probably go with bright red matte stain for lips because it stays put. And then good eyebrows, good (waterproof in case you tear up) mascara and as natural as possible for the rest.

strongthighedbargeman · 23/08/2019 09:34

Absolutely no clue how this isn't wedding appropriate! Some people really are stuck in another decade when it comes to wedding wear. It's fab on you OP. No advice on shoes but definitely a bright orange lipstick and even more so with your great hair colour. I'd go all out and get a tangerine orange colour but if you want something less bold, Dior do a great red/orange called Trafalgar. Enjoy the day!

Aozora13 · 23/08/2019 09:36

I think it’s lovely- the pattern is fab. I reckon for a London cool wedding I’d wear it with orange Mary Jane block heels or maybe something rose gold - I think if you go metallic/sparkly you could get away with flats. I think a long necklace might be nice but actually what would really wedding it up for me would be really nicely done hair & make up.

Floisme · 23/08/2019 09:40

Great pic! I'm going to row back a little on what I said about not needing to dress it up - I now think yes to going for it with your shoes, lipstick and jewellery. (Still think a cuff would work.) Orange sounds good. And you could get something amazing done with your hair which is seriously lovely.

Slurpy · 23/08/2019 09:42

We have a fabulous quarterly local art and maker event local to us, and last time I was looking for an excuse to buy this clutch. Could it work, or is it too much? There were lots of similar, less insect-y bags too - www.seascapecuriosities.co.uk/Store.php and this lovely bagmaker also - www.instagram.com/notchhandmade/.

The wonderful art/maker thing is back, and opens tomorrow....

Thank you for all the makeup suggestions too - my sister offered to let me use her makeup artist on the day, but I turned her down... maybe that was a bit silly... Hmm

I'd love to see you in the dress to convince me it's ok for a wedding....however if you feel nice in it it will look lovely xx

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 23/08/2019 09:46

A metallic like this would look good and be comfortable.

Elllllle · 23/08/2019 09:48

The dress looks AMAZING on you.

I hate the idea of orange shoes though, sorry. I stick to my first suggestion of black block heel ankle boots (or heels) or liked the idea of tan/cognac that a PP suggested.

It was me that suggested the matte orange lippie and I really think this is the way to go. What is your skin tone? It's hard to tell from the pic. Maybelline lip ink does a beautiful orange-coral, stays forever, smoothing 100% rec.

banivani · 23/08/2019 09:48

Lovely dress! I'm shit at matching I've come to realise and always play it safe so I can only think navy and orange. But I think the chicest would be to for example have orange shoes but navy earrings or a chunky bracelet, or navy shoes and orange earrings or bracelet. Not orange orange orange. Tbh (but I'm not a makeup person) the orange lips sound a little weird. You could go bright red lips and match the lips with red shoes/bag.

If you were in Sweden it sounds like the typ of wedding you could wear boots to tbh. Kind of elegantish heeled ones?

Elllllle · 23/08/2019 09:51

Shoes wise: absolute NO to the flats (and the brogues) and RUN from anything metallic. You need a block heel. With a point toe. Either pumps or ankle boots. I think a deep tan coloured leather, now that I've thought about it more.

GCAcademic · 23/08/2019 09:52

It’s lovely, I’ve ordered it in a size down as well, though viscose makes me a bit nervous as it can shrink.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2019 09:54

The dress looks lovely on you. I really don't think you should wear brogues with it though - would be too blue stocking.

Can you manage a block heel? Also I find heeled boots much easier to wear than heeled shoes.

I'm actually thinking that tan or even dark brown boots would be great and much more likely to get worn again. A copper cuff would work really well with either of those, and if you wanted colour you could get it through bag and/or earrings. Personally I'd go for some brilliant earrings and a cuff, rather than a necklace.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/08/2019 09:56

Love the bag, you should definitely get it! But please don't wear black shoes with it. Black is such a cop out, it'll look like you haven't tried.

I'd still definitely wear your hair up and get long earrings - I'd probably look for some that reflect the pattern on the dress a bit.
