Leggings - can you look expensive in them?

I love leggings and unless see through I don't tend to personally think everyone looks cheap in them however you will never see royalty in them unless working out/walking etc. I tend to think there is a snobbery towards them but is that a misconception on my part?

FYI I am wearing leggings today for a day at an upmarket small city!

I am a class changeling (middle-middle to upper-middle) and very sensitive —insecure— about class/“expensive” markers.

I see a lot of women in my (now) peer group in my smart part of London almost permanently in leggings of the expensive Sweaty Betty or Lulu Lemon type. These women are toned and sporty, never fatter than a size 10 tops.

I also regularly see plenty of women in leggings in my down at heel provincial NE hometown also seemingly permanently in leggings. All are significantly overweight.

There are a couple of bohemian looks that leggings look “expensive” on: teamed with a dress or skater skirt it’s ‘off duty ballerina’; teamed with a tunic dress in an offbeat print it’s ‘off duty art teacher’. i am fat and naturally it’s the latter for me Grin.

I have these from Joseph in black and navy, I wear them in Autumn/Winter with an oversized shirt or knit. They look great!

BillywilliamV · 02/08/2019 12:08

With the right top and a great pair of boots in the winter, yes!

ZaraW · 02/08/2019 12:36

For me it's casual only hanging around at home or for yoga. I don't think they look expensive. But who cares if you like them?

NoTheresa · 02/08/2019 12:40

If you mean stylish, the answer is no.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/08/2019 14:09

I am probably in a minority, but for me leggings are worn with a big cosy jumper at home, with sheepskin Ugg knockoff boots. Basically okay if someone comes to the door, but otherwise they go no further than the bins or out to get the cat in.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 02/08/2019 14:14

Depends how you wear them. In the winter with a knit dress or a classy tunic, boots and a nice coat ,it can work. It also depends on the type of leggings.

I live in leggings but I never look expensive/classy.

LolaSmiles · 02/08/2019 14:17

I think looking 'expensive' is a tough one.

I've seen what I would consider to be ridiculously overpriced leggings that are expensive.

If you mean looking well put together then a lot depends on your style. I think trying to 'look classy/expensive' doesn't quite work if it's not how the person's individual style is.

If you're someone who loves the leggings, long line top, jumper look then it can look classy and great and effortless because that's your style.

If you're someone who likes leggings but hunts for ways to make them classy and it's not your style then it's probably always going to look a bit naff.

I agree on the provincial town image from mumdown. That sounds like my town centre. Leggings, often see through, poorly fitted tops, badly done fake tan, faded tattoos and too much skin on show for my liking.

BillieEilish · 02/08/2019 14:22

Oooh, I love the Joseph ones.

Long are the days when I would spend 200.00 in Joseph though, Sad

BillieEilish · 02/08/2019 14:26

Anyway, I agree with PP, if you have nice boots (ankle boots) and are slim and hair is nice/in shape and a nice casual top, I think leggings can look great.

Obvs, leggings don't have to be Joseph, but not Primark either.

PrincessScarlett · 02/08/2019 14:34

I don't think any leggings can look expensive. They are comfy clothing, one up from lounge wear. Perfectly fine with long jumpers/tunic tops but never for creating an 'expensive' look.

HappyHammy · 02/08/2019 14:40

Off to look at Joseph sale

EatenByDinosaurs · 02/08/2019 15:03

They can, I think. Like either of these, or leather leggings with a crisp white shirt.

Bluntness100 · 02/08/2019 15:08

They can do yes, my daughter is five nine and a size eight to ten. With good boots and a great long line top or blouse she can make an outfit with leggings look stylish and expensive, because the other elements are. The leggings have to be thick though and not see through.

She is 22 though,,

Pinkarsedfly · 02/08/2019 15:12

If you’re skinny, you can make anything look expensive.

(I’m currently a stone and a half overweight)

Doobigetta · 02/08/2019 15:27

The second of those photos looks like jeans rather than leggings?
And the first, yes I can see that the woman wearing them has money and spends a lot of time choosing what to wear and is very slim (and I don’t intend to denigrate any of those things) but the first thing I thought was still “sweaty” and the second was “yeast infection”. So I guess it depends of that’s what you’re aiming for.

Bluntness100 · 02/08/2019 15:33

Odd. I thought she looked great and the words sweaty and yeast infection never crossed my mind. I've leather look leggings and they neither make me sweat or give me a yeast infection. Odd thought process.

stucknoue · 02/08/2019 15:36

I wear them more like tights, with knee high boots and tunic/knitted type dresses. Very comfortable and warm for my cold office. They always look cheap if rolls of fat are showing and you can see your knickers through them - bums should definitely be covered!

Doobigetta · 02/08/2019 15:36

Maybe I’m just delicate 🤷🏼‍♀️

Circe32 · 02/08/2019 15:37

ILikeyourHairyHands £195 for a pair of leggings!!!!! Shock

Anois · 02/08/2019 15:40

£200 for Joesph leggings that are dry clean only????

That's a lot of outlay for a casual item. I do like opaque leggings with a long top or sweater, but to me it's a casual, not really going anyway, outfit.

DontCallMeShitley · 02/08/2019 15:46

Those shiny ones look cheap, fashionable or not, sorry.

I wear leggings a lot, the thicker ones, but although they cost a fair bit for leggings I don't think they look expensive, no matter what I wear with them. Or stylish.

Sooverthemill · 02/08/2019 15:53

Ooh the Joseph ones are awesome. Some people swear by the all saints ones too

Teddybear45 · 02/08/2019 15:55

Only if you’re slim and have slim legs.

matahairyy · 02/08/2019 15:57

Yup. Not if your legs are fat.
