Leggings - can you look expensive in them?

I love leggings and unless see through I don't tend to personally think everyone looks cheap in them however you will never see royalty in them unless working out/walking etc. I tend to think there is a snobbery towards them but is that a misconception on my part?

FYI I am wearing leggings today for a day at an upmarket small city!

Teddybear is right.

BillieEilish · 02/08/2019 21:09

Also joseph pp, I have skinny legs (size 8/10) but menopausal tum (12).

Do they give round the waist?

I do think a good, quality pair of leggings can be a very good investment, if you live in them.

chasingseagulls · 02/08/2019 21:15

needsome and everyone else baulking at the price of the Joseph leggings, they NOT IN ANY WAY comparable to jersey leggings, e.g. like the £10 Sainsburys leggings that are often recommended on here, or any other stretch jersey casual type legging. They are basically trousers, albeit super skinny and pull on, with an elasticated waist.

But yes, they can be seen as expensive for trousers, if that's not your budget for trousers in general.

chasingseagulls · 02/08/2019 21:28

I find Joseph true to slightly small to size. I'm a small 10 and wear 38. I'm not curvy. They stretch a little on wearing but gaberdine is pretty study material, even with some elastane. Again, think trousers, not leggings.

Winser London do a near identical quality level alternative for half the price. I've had the miracle legging before, looks like they also do any Italian fabric version for the same price, whatever that means - more cotton and not nylon.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/08/2019 21:49

No. I've tried the Winser London leggings at 95 quid-ish, Joseph are best.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/08/2019 21:51

The Winser London go straight at the ankle. Joseph cling and look better.

Accountant222 · 02/08/2019 21:52

Yesterday I saw a woman of around 30, linen shirt dress, slightly gathered at the back of the waist and leggings, she looked fabulous

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/08/2019 23:36

Of around 30??

So 20-40?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/08/2019 23:38

I passed 'around 30' a good time ago.

That makes me laugh.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/08/2019 23:54

And Joseph legging deisrees, I'm a 10/12 and wear a 38, my wardrobe is mainly Joseph, APC, and Margaret Howell.

All 36/38/40. Generally come up a 38.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/08/2019 23:56

I've been enjoying a bit of Maxmara too of late.

BillieEilish · 03/08/2019 08:11

So, ILikeyourHairyHands a 38 would be ok you think for a size 8/10 but with definite menopausal stomach? IE would the waistband fit do you think?

I am up and down, not curvy at all.

They sound perfect to be honest. Dress up or down and 'trouser' quality is exactly what I'm after. (Am 48 if that makes a difference)

Like PP, I have always found them a slightly smaller true size. The models are all a couple of inches taller than me and wearing size 36.

ChasingSeagulls thanks, that is exactly what I needed to know Smile

RubberTreePlant · 03/08/2019 08:14

I am a class changeling (middle-middle to upper-middle) and very sensitive —insecure— about class/“expensive” markers.

chasingseagulls · 03/08/2019 08:25

BillieEilish Try them. Yes they are not high street cheap but Joseph quality is infinitely better (can't think of anything from Joseph that has worn badly) If spending the money is not an unreasonable stretch for you of course. Buy cheap, buy twice worth thinking of here.

Re dry cleaning, I'm not someone who dry cleans after every wear. I might spot clean a stain but I wear to work or out for a few hours, then change when I get home. But I'm someone who always changes into loungewear boak type clothes at home whatever I'm wearing anyway but it definitely helps.

I've never seen black discounted, although Black Friday deals might include, but The Outnet often has other colours like burgundy, brown etc.

chasingseagulls · 03/08/2019 08:26

Not your size sadly but they restock all the time.

chasingseagulls · 03/08/2019 08:27

sorry, crap link and I don't think it goes straight to leggings but you can filter

BillieEilish · 03/08/2019 08:37

chasingseagulls thanks massively.

You sound like me, I also wear things and change as soon as at home.

Am concerned about washing, but TBH have had lots of things 'dry clean only' and put them on a cold, short wash, it has been fine.

You don't have to convince me about quality over quantity, I totally agree. If I get them, they'll do me 5 years!! Grin

Thank you for links. Joseph always lasted ages for me, but that was back in the day, when in my 20's and living in London! Now clinging to 40's and living in Valencia Hmm

ILikeyourHairyHands · 03/08/2019 10:10

I'm 45 and a bit menopausal round the middle too, so I'd say the 38 would be fine. I'm a spot-cleaner too, I'd be reluctant to wash as I washed the Winser London ones which were a similar fabric and they tripled in size! (Although it was accidental so they were washed at 40°).

You won't regret buying them though, Jospeh do a foundations range of core pieces that they always stock and they're all excellent wardrobe-builders.

BenWillbondsPants · 03/08/2019 10:36

No, I don't think they can, no matter how much you pay for them.

Wearenotyourkind · 03/08/2019 10:40

How does one look "expensive" in general? What does this even mean? Wear what you like/feel comfortable/confident in.

Joh66 · 03/08/2019 10:48

No, I don't think you can either. And I would never wear them, except for running, or tennis on an outdoor court in the winter.

Ellapaella · 03/08/2019 12:40

Leggings are fine although not if they are so thin you can see wobbly bottoms hanging out. But that's just my opinion, if someone is comfortable with their wobbly bum then good for them - who cares what anyone else thinks anyway I suppose.
I never wear leggings except for running or in winter with a jumper or sweater long enough to cover my bum.

Mipiace · 03/08/2019 12:45

Oh no, it depends what you wear with it. Accessories, etc

Mipiace · 03/08/2019 12:47

I don't know/understand why peeps discriminate against them. I make sure to rock them! And i do :)

Zeldaaa · 03/08/2019 19:49

Those Joseph leggings look similar to the pixie ‘pants’ jcrew used to make. Jcrew now have an ‘Any day pant’ which is unfortunately not as good as the old pixies.

Assuming they’re similar I’d agree that they’re not the typical jersey/yoga type legging. The jcrew ones in particular felt fairly sturdy and i do wear them as trousers to the office.
