Do you wear slips?

Hello everyone

And...
Do they improve the look of your outfits?
Are they comfortable?
Which brands do and don't you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Ha! I have just this moment recommended that someone wear a slip with work clothes so they hang better. I'm early 30s and have been wearing them for years. I have black and nude. They make my pencil skirts less clingy and no vpls. Wouldn't be without them.

SquishySquirmy · 14/07/2019 11:50

I'm in my early thirties, and I wear them. Not with everything - just with certain dresses which are unlined, and which look better with another thin layer.

I wear tights a lot. Do you ever get a sort of muffin top where the waistband of the tights dig in? I find a slip hides that weird bump, and also hides the lines left by bra straps etc.

I but them from Sainsbury's - a bit like shapewear, but much less tight and restrictive!

thisenglishlife · 14/07/2019 12:42

Well, you've convinced me ladies. I will be heading to M&S and John Lewis in two weeks time for slips. I wear almost solely dresses and have a few wrap dresses and thin dresses - so they should be good!

To whomever asked about age - I'm 28 and always wear slips with dresses!

Birdrib · 14/07/2019 13:05

I have questions:

Do you still wear a bra underneath?
If so, can you get slips with boob support?
Do you wear them in the summer too or is it more of a winter warmth thing?
Is it like a Spanx type thing or a looser one you’re all wearing?

schnubbins · 14/07/2019 13:12

Yes I wear them under most of my dresses as it gives a smoother outline and the dresses hang so much better. They are also great when a dress blows up and for me when I am on my bike in summer as I wear mainly long skirts and dresses.

StarlightLady · 14/07/2019 13:18

@Birdrib - That is the reason l wear waist slips when I wear them. I’m sure you can get full slips with built-in bras but then I’m fussy about support.

Neither fo I want to many layers.

You can go for loose slips (most common) or something with a little control, but don’t expect miracles. And, to be honest, in the summer, for an extra smooth line knickers can be an optional extra.

StarlightLady · 14/07/2019 13:20

Correction “too many layers”. I always laugh at people who get their to, too and two in a twist. And now I’ve done it myself Blush

Saltisford · 14/07/2019 13:39

I’m mid thirties and have all sorts of slips for all of the reasons above. I have some that have cups in like a built in bra and others that don’t do so you need a bra. I have strapless ones and various colours. Some are shapewear -some are not. I also have shapewear bodies which are good too. T k maxx is a good place to find them - I have dkny ones etc...

LifeOfBox · 14/07/2019 13:50

Loose slips here but full length (with spaghetti straps). I don't like waist high slips, I don't like ending up with too many different things endings at the waist - waist slip, knickers, tights if wearing them - just too many for me to contend with.

Birdrib · 14/07/2019 13:54

This is interesting, I think I’m going to try one. Thank you for all of the help and information Smile

LifeOfBox · 14/07/2019 13:59

I think mine are these, I size down one size.

stucknoue · 14/07/2019 14:08

Sometimes, I have silky ones and shaping ones depending on outfit

KatyaZamolodchikova · 14/07/2019 14:17

I do but call them underskirts, I don’t wear the full dress ones. I have a lot of skirts and dresses for work that get all staticy and cling to tights so I wear an underskirt so they move over each other smoothly. I’m 32 have have been doing this for some years now. Just more comfortable than having to untangle myself or pull hemlines down that have ridden up while walking.

Sigh81 · 14/07/2019 14:23

I do! Am in my early 30s and I buy vintage 30s/40s/50s silk slips (full ones). They are beautiful, functional and DH finds them very sexy as did previous exes.

ChippyMinton · 14/07/2019 18:10

I have these:
M&S slip

It’s reversible V or scoop neck, comes in several different lengths and 3 colours.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 14/07/2019 20:04

I have the m&s ones - I wear them as nighties. So comfy!

OldSpeclkledHen · 14/07/2019 21:00

Omg who knew! I remember my mum buying my cousins slips for Christmas about 30 years ago!
I too thought it was very old fashioned... but obviously not!
Thanks MN! Something else to spend money that I haven't got on something I didn't know I needed! 😂(I wear a lot of dresses 😳)

Arealhumanbeing · 14/07/2019 22:18

Absolutely.

M&S for basic slips and EBay for pure silk.

Dresses look much better and don’t stick to your tights!

StarlightLady · 15/07/2019 07:05

@LifeOfBox - If you buy the dearer, Autograph, Heist or John Lewis tights with the cotton gusset, you don’t need your knickers with them, one less layer and a smoother line. Someof them gave no centre seam either, they are made like a tube.

StarlightLady · 15/07/2019 07:07

MN give us an edit button! Oh dear! Correction: “Some of them have no centre seam either”!

BadnessInTheFolds · 15/07/2019 07:16

Another possible convert who's never considered slips before...

Do they stop dresses riding up? I have a cross body bag and if I'm rushing / not paying attention I find certain dresses gradually gather up on one side and I have to keep moving the bag to release the fanfic. Also I like the idea that I could wear unlined run and fly dresses in cold weather...

LifeOfBox · 15/07/2019 07:17

Commando 😎😳😂. I do buy JL gloss tights with a cotton gusset.

Not sure I will ditch my knickers for work though. I can imagine falling down the stairs and landing in a clumsy heap a la Bridget Jones with my dress round my ears.

BadnessInTheFolds · 15/07/2019 07:17

Fabric not fanfic Grin

LifeOfBox · 15/07/2019 07:19

Yes Badness. I wore a cotton sea salt dress last week without a slip for the first time in months and couldn’t believe how it rode up at the front when I walked ... had tights on though.
