Do you wear slips?

Hello everyone

And...
Do they improve the look of your outfits?
Are they comfortable?
Which brands do and don't you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Doobigetta, I want to hear your mother's clothing rules now! 😂

justasking111 · 13/07/2019 23:51

Rarely wear dresses but they do make a difference to how clothes hang on you. If you look at expensive clothes you sometimes notice how the lining works.

ohhelpohnoitsa · 13/07/2019 23:56

Yes. Mid 40s. Always have and want to shout it from the rooftops when I see women with static dresses and skirts all crumpled and sticking to them. Also think a beautiful outfit is ruined when you can see through it. M and s for me. Knee length and maxi length

TheRLodger · 14/07/2019 00:03

I wear them for modesty or if I have a dress which is slightly see through. But also they don’t make the skirt cling to you so much. And I think it stops it creasing as much throughout the day

luckyrabbits · 14/07/2019 00:09

Late 30's and I wear one everyday under my dresses at work. Makes the dress hang better, does the job lining used to.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/07/2019 01:14

Always wear a slip. I have a midi-length M&S one, and a short Calvin Klein one. The other day I was wearing a pleated midi-skirt on a windy day, and was v grateful for my slip! Also if you are feeling bloated/pre-menstrual they kind of magic it away, dresses and skirts hang much better, plus yes, they stop cling.

Mine are skirt slips, if I need extra coverage at the top I would wear a vest/camisole.

managedmis · 14/07/2019 01:17

Well this is all interesting... Might have to get one

Zinnia · 14/07/2019 01:49

Yes, every time I wear a skirt or dress that isn't already lined. For all the reasons above. I'm in my 40s and have pretty much always worn them. Now get from M&S as they do different lengths. Also recently discovered their culotte slips which do the same job for wide leg trousers (just for some pairs - helps stop them bagging at the knees). Also good for averting thigh rub at this time of year Grin!

CakeNinja · 14/07/2019 03:50

I have never worn a slip. Isn’t it just like wearing 2 dresses?
I practically live in dresses and tights and they have never stuck together - not do my dresses give me lumps and bumps! Well, perhaps they do and everyone is just being polite Grin I don’t care though!
I buy clothes that fit and have not found (so far) that I need to wear a dress under my dress. I’m not ruling them out for the future,
I didn’t really know what they were for to be honest.

Mamaslave18 · 14/07/2019 03:56

I have a skirt slip that I wear a lot because I find so many dresses and skirts are see through these days.

LauderSyme · 14/07/2019 04:12

Yes, yes and yes, M&S and John Lewis. They stop skirts from getting snagged in your bum crack and crotch! And smooth your VPL. I'm mid forties and I call them petticoats. My mum and gran have always advocated them, I probably wouldn't wear them if they hadn't.

I have never worn a slip. Isn’t it just like wearing 2 dresses? No because they're very lightweight and have a silky slippery feel.

BitOfFun · 14/07/2019 04:18

Welcome to mumsnet, by the way.

StarlightLady · 14/07/2019 04:45

They can give you a better line. I have a couple of waist slips in the drawer one black from John Lewis and a bright red one, which I can’t remember where it came from; they last for ever. The red one is fun to add that possible quick splash of colour.

I’m not a regular slip wearer though and reserve them for certain skirts that tend to cling to (my) bumpy bits and even then not always.

I’m less bothered about skirts/dresses being slightly see through in the summer, within reason. The silhouette is fine by me. As long as if’s not for work.

Wormentrude · 14/07/2019 08:54

Yep. I have them in black and nude, both half and full slips. I use them to make things less see-through, and to make dresses and skirts hang and move better. I love them. I very rarely wear a dress or skirt without a slip.

LifeOfBox · 14/07/2019 08:56

Yes, my Mum buys them for me in Boundary Mills - not sure what brand they are but full length, silky, slight stretch. Everything hangs better - I wear dresses every day for work.

3luckystars · 14/07/2019 08:58

I'm getting one.

Greenteandchives · 14/07/2019 09:01

Yes I wear a waist slip under dresses. It feels better, gives a better line, stops cling and see through, and saves your modesty when it’s windy.

BitOfFun · 14/07/2019 09:01

Are you a man?

WalkerSisters · 14/07/2019 09:11

God yes, I've been wearing them since I was 20. 30 years later I still feel like it's a granny item but I know I look sooooooo much better with one for all the reasons already stated. I know it's bad, but I'm afraid I do look at other people and think 'oh, you need a slip with that dress my dear'. (Particularly a young woman at a wedding wearing a very thin white dress with lacy pants underneath). Always check your rear view in a mirror!

ChippyMinton · 14/07/2019 09:17

I have a knee length black dress slip from M&S which I wear under unlined dresses or skirts, for all the reasons already given.

StarlightLady · 14/07/2019 10:35

@WalkerSisters - There are times and certain dresses when, slip or no slip, the best knickers are no knickers! Unless you are doing cartwheels that is. It’s a “summer sport” though.

teta · 14/07/2019 10:38

I have the M&s cotton waist slips. I hate synthetic linings so rip them out of skirts and wear a slip instead. Also wear slips under sheer cotton dresses. I just wish I could buy nude cotton ones too.

BlackSwan · 14/07/2019 11:00

Yes, ones with a bit of Lycra to cinch everything in and smooth bumps (and vpl) Wacoal for instance. Or hanro slip on top and Wolford smoothing shorts under trousers. Am a bit obsessed. Also get cold if I don’t

IsadoraQuagmire · 14/07/2019 11:13

I wear them a lot (I have different colours and lengths) I'm early 20s

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 14/07/2019 11:21

they just make any unlined dress look and hang better

cuts out that creep of almost all wrap dresses, no fear of an inadvertant boob/bra flash

no worry that everyone is seeing your knicker elastic, and tbh YES everyone can see your underwear when you wear an even slightly fitted unlined dress, no one needs to know for sure that your pants are high leg with a lace detail bum cover, or that today you went for that thong that cuts across your hip just that bit too neatly.
and as @LauderSyme said, no dress/bumcrack fiascos either!

Also lots of men like them...gives them Mrs Robinson fancies.

I think they are a must for almost all dresses tbh.
