although I suppose if I got sacked I wouldn't need a walking-to-work coat any more.
Thats more like it Flo, silver linings!

botemp · 07/10/2019 17:37

time if you're near Perugia I believe the Perugina chocolate factory (definitely grab a box of Baci's, way better than ferrero rocher) has some sort of factory tour and museum which may be worth a visit. I haven't been myself (I'm just a Baci addict) so check it out on TripAdvisor or similar first as it could just be one of those sad little expo rooms next to a giant gift shop which will be a bit of a disappointment to kiddos expecting a Charlie and the Chocolate factory reenactment.

I think our collective verdict on the Pringle Collab can be summarised as, are they on glue?

I may need to get into racy regency novels if there's coat porn Blush I keep meaning to pass on a recommendation for a podcast from some American academics about the history of clothing, it's really interesting but now I've forgotten the name.

The Stella coat looks to be one that looks great on its own but probably a bit Michelin man on an actual body, Bani.

Since we're still shitting on parkas, another thing I hate. They're always photographed worn open. They don't look that bad at all then but it's not really a good solution, I do occasionally wear it open with a scarf to sort of warm up the opening and that works so long as it's dry and not windy, which is pretty much never Hmm

Also, time, if you're wondering why the bread tastes so crap when you're expecting amazing Italian breads, they traditionally don't use salt in bread in that region Envy

Ds has trashed the kitchen all weekend making croissants from scratch. (don't let your children try this, but DS is bigger than I am). And now they're baked, they're really excellent, but he said he would freeze some for baking later, and he's done them all. Do not let yourself be talked into this mayhem. I have been kitchen portering all weekend, and I don't really like washing up much. Just a whinge.

Floisme I was looking at the hood with a friend the other day, and have to admit I'd be tempted. It would pack away so easily and could work with a couple of coats.

Bo looking at the British Millerain website mentioned up thread (which alas is pretty poor) I'd say there fabric is about 140cm wide, maybe up to 147cm.

Comparing that to a couple of sewing pattern fabric requirements, I'd say you'd want 3m. These are the patterns I used for reference, I've seen the Jack sewn in a lovely dusty rose fabric and it was very chic.

www.theassemblylineshop.com/all-paper-patterns/hoodie-parka-sewing-pattern

www.readytosew.fr/en/store/jackets/jack-trench-coat

A Canadian online fabric shop Blackbird fabrics, had some lovely tartan waxed canvas on their site which has now sold out, so no link, but I'd bet money it was British Millerain.

The Margaret Howell Barbour is so perfect, but unfortunately has the price tag to go with it Hmm

Croissants are far too much effort for the results IME. It's probably a good call on not freezing them, you have to freeze somewhere else in the process, can't remember where but it's an odd point and it's a faff. Enjoy them while you can. Did he use the Alex French guy cooking recipe/YT series by any chance, I've been wondering if they're worth the effort as most proper croissant recipes aren't written for the home kitchen.

I was looking at this website Name as they're somewhat local (low shipping costs anyhow):

www.destoffenmadam.be/nl/stoffen/soort-stof/oilskin-gewaxte-katoen/

Prices per 10cm so not exactly cheap, potentially could be Millerian too? I quite like the Prince of Wales one actually but it wouldn't go with my existing coat. If just doing something from scratch and ripping off the Kassl editions coat, the conker colour looks very promising. 3m still feels a bit tight to me as I don't think it would allow for any mistakes, I'd definitely do a test run with a cheap fabric first anyhow.

I get empty content on the Jack trench link (I can see the rest of the site parts loaded just no text or images Confused) I'll have to check that one out later on a non mobile device.

Is it likely Barbour are using Millerian fabrics too?

I have been looking at the dp studio site too and I'm kind of taking a liking to the tromp L'oeil trench too. They chose some really weird fabrics but maybe that could work with a oilcloth bottom and a rubberised top (will need to work in a hood), getting a bit of juxtaposition going with matte and shine. Blasted double breasted design again though, although I could pull a Céline and do invisible buttons with just one visible top right (or just super clean and none) which makes double breasted a lot more wearable on me and decidedly less udder-like.

Flo, on the Cos hoods, I've tried on the padded one and it just sat really weirdly in my coat, wanted to move everywhere, was weirdly bulky in localised areas, etc. May just have been down to my coat but it seemed a lot of effort.

The rain coat one is interesting but I feel it's a bit pricey, none of the raincoat materials I've seen at Cos have been particularly high grade and for the price of that hood you can get an average waterproof flimsy raincoat from the high street.

OP posts:
Floisme · 07/10/2019 22:12

Yes you're probably right. I'd be better off with a rain mate and a pack-a-mac like my mum had.

banivani · 08/10/2019 08:12

Separate hoods, what are we, 14th century ploughmen?

Bo when the temperatures are at -15 Michelin man is the desired look. ;) But YYY to the annoyance of coats being shown open! You’re fooling no-one, and you’re not showing us what we need to know (like how the hood fits when the coat is closed). I especially despise photos where they’re holding the hoods coquettishly like fucking eejits. We all know most coats look better open on most people (lines etc) but this is not how we will be wearing them!

Also, that brown coat in your last pic was cool. It’s also a bit regency, so you def have a theme going. I think even I, with my more wallpaper than art inclinations, could get behind a coat like that. The waxed fabric you linked to seems to be Merchant and Mills if I’m deciphering the Dutch correctly.

Xing oh no, did you get homemade croissants? Wink

Thisname The Jack trench was very nice actually. It doesn’t look well suited to stiffer fabrics though (like waxed cloth)?

botemp · 08/10/2019 08:38

Sorry you're right it is --MM- mills and boons (not boobs stupid autocorrect, although probably a bit more apt than the original) I've just been looking at pictures and titles mostly Blush

Ok if you're going for Michelin man, I suggest going full hog as either, sinister dark lord Michelin man, happy go lucky aliens Michelin man, or Handmaid's Tale Michelin man.

omg those are fantastic! Grin I've long had an idea that I should make a winter overskirt (like padded trousers but a skirt, very popular in Sweden in the winter among middle aged women) that was wide and a bit full and pair it with a shorter jacket in the same fabric. My plan was that it would end up being a modern version of this georgianera.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/lady-worsley.jpg but without the obvious riding habit buttons etc (more like a modern down jacket with a zip).

But that handmaid look is certainly distinctive!

I don't know why but I find that snow(?) horse pic rather disturbing, it's reminding me of Leda and the Swan pictures Shock

I've looked up the podcast name btw Dressed: The History of Fashion. Latest episode was on punk actually but I'm still very much behind catching up with the earlier podcasts.

Will check podcast.

Re horse skirt I was not surprised the creator was Ukrainian. It was a little "russian wedding photos".

Redandblue11 · 08/10/2019 11:46

time a bit jealous that you are in Italy travelling. One of my fave countries.

Grin at the coat discussion above. I am afraid I agree with all observations but have nothing to add!
And omg that Michelin look!

I have just finished Call My Agent (which I loved) and I am desperate for a recommendation in Netflix. Bo any suggestions?

My hands are itching ... trying to get to my purse and buy something. But I am telling myself is a normal withdrawal phase! So I am sitting firm.

botemp · 08/10/2019 13:12

Why did I Google "Russian wedding photos" Shock Shock Shock I should know better to Google random things from MN. Raw chickens FFS!

Ahem, Netflix suggestions. Do you mean French ones? I quite enjoyed the movie 'I am not an easy man' about a mysogonist pig suddenly waking up in a matriarchy. 'The hook up plan' was annoying and too millennial/gen z so I'd avoid that. If you like murder mystery/crime type shows La Mante is really good, if a bit uncomfortable to watch at times. I haven't seen it yet but Family Business is on my to watch list, it stars the older woman agent with the little dog from CMA, about a family starting up a marijuana business.

The recipe for croissants, which worked well, was from Gourmetier, on line. They were delicious bani; I had to suffer two for the sake of parental love and duty, but heaven knows how my arteries are holding up! Vast amounts of handmade artisanal butter went into them.

Loving the coat/hood thoughts.

Redandblue11 · 08/10/2019 14:36

I agree with the hook up plan bo, I watched 15 min last night and I found it sooo annoying and I gave up.
I will explore your recommendations. Thank you

banivani · 08/10/2019 17:17

Oi are we talking about Plan Coeur here? I quite enjoyed that (skimming over the glorifying prostitution bit).

xing I would not have let him use the best butter now Shock

botemp · 08/10/2019 17:48

Yes, Plein Couer. It was shite, fight me! Please don't. I'm the most non-confrontational scardy cat you'll ever meet

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 08/10/2019 18:21

Yes Plan Coeur. I would not touch it with a barge pole Wink well funny how the same programme can have so different reactions / produce different opinions in people. Maybe I am too far from millennials...

botemp · 08/10/2019 18:45

Ahem, technically I am a millennial but refuse to identify as one. This may explain my dislike 🤷

OP posts:
banivani · 08/10/2019 20:08

Well yeah I didn’t expect much from it but mild entertainment which didn’t force me to think too hard, but I’ll admit it wasn’t good good. Maybe your expectations were too high. 😉 because it was fraaanch 😛

XingMing · 08/10/2019 21:15

bani, DS bought the best quality butter; me, I'd have bought something less.
