Trump looks like he's been trussed up like a chicken with a fat tummy.

MotherofPearl · 03/06/2019 22:41

Good lord @Wetdogloveshubert, that's enough to put anyone off their dinner!

icannotremember · 03/06/2019 22:43

I really don't like Kate's dress and Ivanka's just doesn't seem right, nice as it is. I think I caught a glimpse of Theresa May earlier and wondered why someone who clearly likes clothes as much as she does, and has no real worries about budget, doesn't get better advice on what suits her.

AdaColeman · 03/06/2019 22:47

Ivanka's dress is more afternoon tea dance than state banquet.

MotherofPearl · 03/06/2019 22:50

I agree @icannotremember. Nothing wrong with the dress itself but boy is it a terrible style for her! Very unflattering.

I mean the PM not DoC.

MoreProseccoNow · 03/06/2019 22:55

@Wetdogloveshubert - thanks for sharing the pic of Donald Trump's neck labia! They are renowned! Grin

floraloctopus · 03/06/2019 22:59

The PMs dress looks like something you'd wear on holiday.

BertrandRussell · 03/06/2019 23:03

Ivanka really is very beautiful. Awful- but beautiful.

PinguDance · 03/06/2019 23:04

I think Camilla’s outfit is very odd and the bodice is quite unflattering. Not fussed about Kates’s dress either and Melania looks nice but it’s not what I would wear for dinner with the queen if I were in her position. She could wear that Dior dress to all sorts of events but a state banquet is a chance to really go for it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 23:07

So beautiful that Trump said he'd date her 🤮

Of course, he probably paid for her surgery...

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 23:12

I'll be honest, I don't get the Camilla love on these threads. I know I'm a bit preoccupied with deportment but she's another one who could stand better. Her boobs need better support or at least shorter bra straps! But she looked pretty good tonight.

PinguDance · 03/06/2019 23:13

I had another look at Camillas dress seeing as so many people have rated it and I’m still not getting it. Doing nothing for her.

ElspethFlashman · 03/06/2019 23:14

TM always wears these wierd sack dresses with her arms out. It's wierd, for someone who loves clothes so much, it's like she has a mental block about High Glam.

I really don't get the American obsession with shirt dresses. They're all at it. Crazy about the whole collar and rolled sleeve thing. Maybe they think it's preppy. But the fabric is too heavy and stiff here. It's like upholstery fabric.

I actually do think that the Orders and sashes do dictate a fair bit of what you can wear. You see it a lot in the formal gowns of CP Mary, who is forever having to wear that stuff, and they have this heavy elephant insignia. You have to really think about the construction of the bodice so the sash lays nicely. The sashes also have to be pinned front and back of the shoulder so you need fabric it can be pinned on to. Melanias mesh bodice might tear with two diamond brooches stuck into it, for example. And then you have the big bow order which frankly looks dreadful unless it is almost camoflagued against the background colour.

SenecaFalls · 03/06/2019 23:16

I think Ivanka’s dress maybe one of those that looks better in reality. It’s a gorgeous colour.

I think so too. It does look a bit dressed down; shirt-waisty but in fine fabrics is a hallmark of Carolina Herrera. I really like the dress (would be perfect for my nephew's upcoming wedding, if I could afford it) but it comes across in the photos as a bit too casual for white tie.

beanaseireann · 03/06/2019 23:17

Did Melania keep her gloves on to eat ?

ElspethFlashman · 03/06/2019 23:19

I don't know if you can enlarge it, but this is a photo of the back of the sashes. Every one has had to think carefully about where to put a brooch to secure the sash in place.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 23:21

I loved Ivanka's dress but so wrong for the banquet.

TM's dress was odd, she has a T shirt tan which didn't help.

I imagine a further complication of the white dress is not looking too bridal.

JasperRising · 03/06/2019 23:24

Does anyone know why the fondness for long gloves with sleeveless dresses amongst the American women (Michelle Obama, Melania and the daughter in law was it?) They just seem wrong to me - the kind of look I remember going for at 1990s high school black tie prom rather than state dinner. It's clearly not a requirement to wear gloves as the younger members of the royal family who are in sleeveless gowns aren't wearing them (and the Queen has long sleeves which looks ok with gloves).

I am perhaps giving too much though to glove but is all I can see in the formal photos!

(I also like the colour of Ivanka's dress but agree it seems a bit too casual)

pastaparadise · 03/06/2019 23:28

Ivankas dress was over $9k - but still looks dressed down! I think it looks ok when seen full length but too casual when sat at the table as not like a normal 'gown '.

Also bit surprised at all the love for Camilla's dress- she looks great but dress itself is entirely forgettable.

Kate's is nice but not amazing either .

Does the taxpayer pay for state banquets? That spread, security, staff, flowers etc - must cost a fortune!

And is there a protocol re white and gloves??

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 23:31

It's a vintage look, you would have seen this a lot in the 1950s. It does seem an odd choice but it may have had a practical origin. Possibly to protect fingers from nicotine stains when more women smoked, who knows? I rather like it, but I tend to associate it with Audrey Hepburn and her ilk. On the other hand it does have a bit of a stripper vibe...

AnneEyhtMeyer · 03/06/2019 23:31

Camilla's formal gowns always look like an old sofa cushion which has lost its plump.

JasperRising · 03/06/2019 23:34

Myimaginarycathasfleas I hadn't thought of the Audrey Hepburn look but I can see that now. I have to say when I have worn gloves I found them rather impractical band never knew whether to take them off to eat (using cutlery when wearing gloves feels odd) but where do you then put them, and does jewellery go over or under?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 23:35

Debutantes complete with gloves (and almost certainly in white)
