I've been to many formal events in my time in the US (DH's work involved attending a lot of these, mostly black rather than white tie however), and I have never seen women in full length gloves. I think some protocol person at the White House may be giving outdated advice about what's expected at BP.

GlamGiraffe · 03/06/2019 23:42

My toddler has had the demons for the past 12 hours. I've missed it all apart from "this is melania your BA crew member" landing and the insane amount of time it took for a helicopter to land in BP. It's not as if they're pushed for space!!
Kate's dress reminds me of the undershirt you get on some wedding dresses😯. MrsT is dresses for a charity dinner and not a state occasion and his tanliness- my eyes may be permanently scarred from seeing that picture of him in the line up.
I really wish MN had reaction buttons like FB. I'm laughing my head off reading this. Toddler still screaming so it's laugh or cry now!
Meet is v thin. Why is everyone saying she has a fat tummy or her dress doesnt fit? Im sure for her budget they make the dress fit you as its meant to. Im thin but shes thinner, her boobs are her problem!
If I wa her I'd be armed with a dart to jab my husband every time he said something extra stupid- but then she's probably immune- he has to be, surely.

@SenecaFalls Black tie is formal dress(used to be long but sadly cocktail and worse lycra are creeping in) and dinner suit for men. White tie is a ball. Full length gloves and tiaras on ladies. They don't happen except in very very upper class circles wheras black tie is relatively common.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 23:58

I also understood white tie to mean tiaras and long gloves, but thought I might be out of date given the absence of them on this occasion. HMQ was definitely wearing gloves (short ones as she had long sleeves on).

GlamGiraffe · 04/06/2019 00:03

White Tie: Women
– Full-length, formal evening dresses. It is traditional, but not essential, to show décolletage. Shorter dresses or trousers, no matter how smart, are not acceptable.

– Jewellery can be striking; this is the time for the finest jewels and gems, including tiaras. Traditionally these are worn for the first time by brides, and subsequently by married women only. It is incorrect for young girls to wear tiaras on any occasion.

– Evening bags should be small and elegant.

Gloves
Long evening gloves are traditionally worn at balls and dinners when the dress code is ‘white tie’ but are no longer compulsory at many events. They work best with sleeveless dresses but older women may wear them with cap or short sleeves. With long sleeves it is better to dispense with gloves, rather than wear short ones. Gloves should be worn en route to an event, in a receiving line, when shaking hands and dancing. They are removed when eating (even a canapé) and at the dinner table – they should be taken off finger by finger and rested on the lap under the napkin.

There we go. Good old debretts will tell you the lot.it has full descriptions of every detail of black and white tie events as well as clothing and all things etiquette. All about the way an event is conducted etc.
Presumably they gave HIM a copy.

Melania’s gown reminds me of a bridesmaid gown, or something you only see in Ms Universe beauty pageants.

hate Kate’s dress. Really terrible

Gingerivy · 04/06/2019 00:40

Pic of Trump's adult children tonight.

If someone hasn't answered it the blonde next to William was Suzanna Ircha - wife of the American Ambassador

itswinetime · 04/06/2019 01:26

Finally caught up after work.

Love the queens tiara!
Camillia's dress is good cut for her but I don't like the detail at the bottom.
Kate's is awful probably the worse banquet dress I have seen her in

Melania needed so bling and it was a bit miss world in style for me
Ivanka was an odd one I like the dress but it was wrong for the occasion I'm not sure what occasion it would be right for though.

No sign of rose but I'm not sure what you can read into that someone said she was pregnant so maybe a valid reason for missing it or she would rather stick pockets in her eyes than down the night with the trumps.

How do invitations to these kind of events work anyway? Trump has all his adult children and partners ect with him so does that mean people lower down the list get bumped? There also seemed to be lots of politicians do they get priority over others?

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 01:28

My mother had a pair of white kid opera length gloves but I don't remember her wearing them.

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 01:33

I'm not sure what occasion it would be right for though.

It would be perfect for quite a few nighttime weddings in the US, many of which are black tie, and female wedding guests tend to wear long dresses at those.

That's a good shout it just felt wrong for this occasion.

Drum role please I went to twitter after catching up here Rose was there tonight no idea where she was sat and I think the pregnancy might have been a rumour looking at her in that dress which is quite nice but agin not sure it fits the event.

Does anyone know which tiara Anne is wearing?

managedmis · 04/06/2019 02:09

It does look like they're fist bumping here Grin

I don't like Kates dress at the banquet, it looks like toilet paper.

I also don't like Ivanka's blue dress - not sure how she's done it but she looks twee?

Harry looks like he's just had a shower, scrubbed and pink.

Does anybody know who the dark haired chap at the end of the 'Trump's children' photo? Is he one of his sons?

I can not bear to look at Tiffany Trump for some reason, she makes my teeth itch.

Sorry for the mega negative post Grin

The supper sounds spectacular does Donald know what chevreuil is Grin

managedmis · 04/06/2019 02:10

Sorry about the long link, I only wanted to link the fist bump pic Blush

itswinetime · 04/06/2019 02:12

Is it this one?

aquamarine

managedmis · 04/06/2019 02:12

Who is this Rose character?

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 02:33

Yes, itswinetime I think that's it.

I see that lamb was on the menu. I assume that they checked ahead of time, but lamb consumption in the US is very low; lots of Americans don't eat it.

queenofarles · 04/06/2019 02:33

Rose does look pregnant , I think her dress is Chanel . But not sure which season Hmm

queenofarles · 04/06/2019 02:37

Very similar to this one, yet it isn’t . it will bug me all day

I think that’s Donald Junior.

Thatsnotmyname4291 · 04/06/2019 03:05

I actually didn’t mind Kate’s dress. A bit fussy, sure, but not soooo bad on the eye.

IT though and the other Trump children - did nobody check and have a quick ‘look, it’s very nice but not very formal is it?’.

IHeartArya · 04/06/2019 03:13

Well spotted wine

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 04/06/2019 03:35

Ivanka's dress looks a lot better from the waist down. But the collar is awful, and pictured sitting down the top half just looks way too informal for the occasion.

I owe a couple of you a DM from the last thread. I've been away, I'll get on to it tomorrow. Apologies for the delay.
