Help me buy a new waterproof coat with hood

Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 10:25

Can anyone please help me buy a coat for this ridiculous weather. Something waterproof with a hood, upto or below knees. Something trendy, without too many pockets and shoulder flaps. I have a big chest.

No sea salt recommendations please. I bought the long sea salt coat in blue, and found that the grandmother (70’s) of a child in my youngest child’s class was wearing it too. I’m 36. So I’ve folded it up and tucked it away at the back of my wardrobe.

I've got the navy Lucasta parka from the Alesha Dixon X Regatta collection they're half price at present so about £50.

Just above knee length with removable black fake fur on the hood, not padded so suitable for this weather.

I saw it advertised in Cosmopolitan & liked it, had been looking for a fashionable waterproof jacket for ages!
It's kept me dry on several occasions now.

tierraJ · 19/05/2019 10:46

Sorry meant to say I bought it online from the Regatta website

Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 10:53

Thanks! Off to look now

I swear by my Protected Species parka. Totally waterproof and stylish. I've always bought when there's a discount code

Floisme · 19/05/2019 11:00

Another Protected Species fan here. I don't know your budget but I bought their mac last summer when they had a half price offer on with Mumsnet. Don't know if they'll do the same this year - probably depends on how the weather pans out. All my life I've shied away from spending money on waterproof clothing but this is bloody brilliant. It looks smart enough to take me just about anywhere I need to be, but also keeps me dry.
Unfortunately for you I'm 60+ so I guess you'll have to rule it out. Wink

Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 11:04

It looks really nice and fantastic price too, just what I’m looking for! Is the material really shiny in RL? Also did the fit come up big, small or just right? I’m measuring 39” bust and not sure to go for 14 or 16

There’s always a risk with rain coats (if you see it as a risk) that someone much older will be wearing the same
One. Maybe it’s because there are so few raincoats about and they don’t seem to be aimed at particular styles or age groups as other clothes can be. I suppose it’s because they are a practical item
Rather than fashion. This is backed up by all the threads on here where people ask for stylish rainwear!

LoafofSellotape · 19/05/2019 12:05

I just cannot imagine not wearing a coat I liked enough to buy in the first place because I saw someone older than me wearing itConfused

Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 14:42

I have issues around how i dress after hearing some comments from colleagues in the past that I dressed like a mum wearing mum boots and clothes. Maybe I’m shallow or ageist or whatever, but why should I feel shit wearing something someone much older than me is wearing? I’m try to dress fashionably to feel confident, there is nothing wrong with not wanting to dress like someone older than me. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone.

LoafofSellotape · 19/05/2019 14:52

I don't even know how to respond to your post.

Floisme · 19/05/2019 14:59

If I took offence at every ageist comment on here I'd have flounced off S&B years ago. Most of the time, it makes me laugh these days. Occasionally I still bite. I'm sorry you don't feel confident and I'm always happy to chip in when people ask for help but you do know you can't catch old age from clothes, don't you?

Anyway my advice is still to hold out for an offer on the Protected Species mac if you can afford to pay, say half price for it.

Rathkelter · 19/05/2019 15:01

It's not that hard to respond, Loaf... OP wants nice raincoat recommendations. She's not happy with the one she bought.
I posted something similar recently and Protected Species was recommended again. I'm at the point where I would like to buy fewer, long-lasting and sustainably produced clothes.

LoafofSellotape · 19/05/2019 15:08

What happens if the OP sees someone older wearing the same rain coat as the new one she buys, she'll bin that to the back of wardrobe too?

LoafofSellotape · 19/05/2019 15:11

I hope you find a rain coat you like and are comfortable inSmile

Ellapaella · 19/05/2019 15:18

I'm not sure I'd be offended by hearing someone say I dressed like a Mum wearing clothes and boots - I am a Mum and often wear boots and usually clothes (apart from the days I like to swan around totally naked - that really gives my colleagues something to whisper about).
I'm not sure how helpful I'll be as I can't think of any brand of raincoat that is exclusively for under 40's - even protected species and regatta as mentioned above are coats worn by people of all ages. TopShop do raincoats and I guess probably aimed at the younger generation.. could try there?

Alsohuman · 19/05/2019 15:41

I love Protected Species but l'm 65 so l guess you won't want one of their coats, OP.

Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 15:55

I don’t need these passive aggressive comments.

OP posts:
Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 15:57

And I can’t justify spending £199 on a coat. I made that mistake with the sea salt one.

stucknoue · 19/05/2019 15:59

Mines from mountain warehouse, it's the very waterproof one they do vary.

clippityclop · 19/05/2019 16:16

Seems daft to waste the Seasalt one, you must've liked it when you bought it. For the record I have a stylish 18 year old niece - she loves a Seasalt raincoat.

Alsohuman · 19/05/2019 16:16

Maybe if you hadn't been so rude about older women...

Needhelpfeelingcold · 19/05/2019 16:19

Wtf, I said I didn’t want to dress the same as a grandmother in my dc’s Class. How is that rude? You’re just finding things to get upset about. Go away.

tierraJ · 19/05/2019 16:45

My coat is not that shiny, I bought a size 14 which fitted fine, I'm quite curvy too.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 19/05/2019 16:51

This brand is very popular in Ireland. They are reasonably stylish as raincoats go.

What if a grandmother in their 30s/40s was wearing the Seasalt coat? Would that be okay? Confused

FGS just wear the coat you got already as I can assure you nothing will make you look better if that's your attitude to (older) women.
