Mid 30s - what are items are definitely no longer suitable?

Mid 30s, size 6-8, lost my way a bit.
Chucked out a lot of stuff (all too big) and buying new. Love some of the current fashions and finally feel I can wear them due to the weight loss but now I might be too old?
I’m guessing short dresses and mini skirts are a no which is fine, I don’t want to wear them anyway. What else is a definite no?

Wtf ? I’m mid 40’s and my mini skirts look Fabulous

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 15/05/2019 19:20

Mid 30s - you’re a young thing! Wear what you like and what looks good.

Rooftree · 15/05/2019 19:20

It’s so depressing to read. I’m 10 years older than you op and whilst I do try to wear things which look good on me rather than blindly following trends, I do like to enjoy my clothes and have some fun with them. Rules about what women over the age of 35 can wear are frankly hugely depressing

FannyFeatures · 15/05/2019 19:24

I'm mid 30's, I wear whatever I like and your should do the same!

Don't get bogged down by the latest trends or what other people wear, it's your comfort and opinion that matters.

I live in clothes that I would happily of worn when I was in my teens i.e. jeans, t-shirt, hoodie and trainers 90% of the time!

Shopkinshurtlikelego · 15/05/2019 19:29

I like this...my mother says I’m too old!!

Wear what you like OP.

I am now in my 50s (no idea how that happened!) and wear what I like, and what I think suits me. I don't give a great deal of thought to age - my body shape and colouring (and budget) determine what I buy.

Floisme · 15/05/2019 19:30

Congratulation on the weight loss. I'd probably step away from anything with Barbie on the back. That's it.

I do get that losing a lot of weight doesn't automatically make you more confident but what's the point of all that hard work if you're still going to set limits on yourself?

I would get out there and try loads of things on, make mistakes (nothing too £££ at first unless you've got a big budget) and enjoy.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 15/05/2019 19:33

Oh. Another joke thread to remind women they really should have the good sense to crawl into a hole and die rather than reach thirty five years of age.

Aimily · 15/05/2019 19:34

Please don't say you're too old!!! If you want to wear something, wear it, you should always what you want!! My only stipulation is make sure your comfy, there is nothing worse than someone rocking an outfit they look good in, but clearly aren't confident.

If it helps at all, I'm 28, my mum is 48, she regularly borrows my clothes and visa versa.

Also that dress is lovely!!

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/05/2019 19:35

Funny, I think that dress is targeted at the older women. You're too young for that (but feel free to rock that dress if you like it).

SymbollocksInteractionism · 15/05/2019 19:37

I agree with Disfordarkchocolate

NoBaggyPants · 15/05/2019 19:37

Is this a wind up? That dress is not appropriate at any age, it's awful!

Wear what you want, just not polyester and leopard print!

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 15/05/2019 19:38

Your mother's being a bit of a twat Grin

You can wear what you like, ESPECIALLY when you're a teeny tiny size 6-8!

OxanaVorontsova · 15/05/2019 19:40

I'm 49 and would happily wear that!

Shopkinshurtlikelego · 15/05/2019 19:40

Ha, animal print is really fashionable at the moment!
Yeah, my mum reckons I shouldn’t show my upper arms anymore. 🙁

BIWI · 15/05/2019 19:42

You do realise that ageism is against MN talk guidelines don't you? And that's ageism directed at older women and younger women.

It's absolute nonsense to say you're too young or too old for anything.

If you like it, if you can afford it, if it fits and if you like how it looks on you then go ahead and buy it.

I'm sick and tired of casual ageism on MN and especially on this board.

herethereandeverywhere · 15/05/2019 19:43

LOL @NoBaggyPants I'm 42 and a similar size to the OP. Today I bought 3 animal print dresses, one of which is polyester! Haven't worn animal print since my teens, I'm lovin' it!

GlitterPixie · 15/05/2019 19:43

Wear whatever you like! There are no rules

NoBaggyPants · 15/05/2019 19:43

It's the animal print polyester combination that's wrong. And the frills. Many many frills.

What does she think is wrong with your upper arms?

BestIsWest · 15/05/2019 19:45

What BIWI said.

Shopkinshurtlikelego · 15/05/2019 19:47

I like this one too

Shopkinshurtlikelego · 15/05/2019 19:48

Gah I don’t mean to be ageist!
I just feel I’ve lost my way a little, I don’t know what’s ‘aimed’ at me (middle aged mum) and what isn’t.

OP posts:
herethereandeverywhere · 15/05/2019 19:48

I also own a leather skirt, several pairs of 'hotpants' (going out shorts) and relatively short tshirts (my 73 yo mum has eyed them suspiciously and accused them of being crop tops but they're not that short, just touch the waistband of my skirt or top).
I do keep forgetting my age when I buy clothes, it's the best way.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/05/2019 19:48

Get them arms out!

CalamityJune · 15/05/2019 19:49

If you try it on and you like how you look and feel in it, then wear it.
