To accept I will never look good in a pair of shorts

I'm 5ft 5 and size 10 top and size 12 bottom. Typical pear shape.
However I have absolutely awful legs. Throughout the autumn/winter is great as my legs are covered but come summer I have the same issue. I cannot show my legs. I have been blessed with horrible chunky flabby elephant style knees and chunky calves and thighs. They are also covered in cellulite.
I have tried everything to make me feel less self conscious. I've had sessions with a personal trainer last year, I've had lipo fat freezing on them (which did nothing) and I've tried dry body brushing. Nothing has worked. I had lunch today with my best mate who has legs to die for. She was wearing a gorgeous pair of tiny khaki shorts and looked fab. I sat sweltering in jeans. I think I am going to have to accept that I will never have the legs I long for.
Anyone else in the same boat?

My legs are fine except for the fact I bruise super easily, am pale and v clumsy. I look like a battered woman from the hip down so can't wear shorts or skirts without opaque tights. Sad

OldJoseph · 15/05/2019 07:06

Very few adults look good in shorts, men look worse than women somehow, don't think I've ever seen a man in shorts and though he looks good in them. They suit children best.
They are great as a practical item of clothing and I love my children wearing them.

starzig · 15/05/2019 07:26

You are being a bit precious. Just get the shorts on. It doesn't matter what you look like do long as you are not being obscene. Just relax and have fun.

ittooshallpass · 15/05/2019 07:27

I haven't worn shorts since about 1978. They look terrible on me. I prefer skirts, linen trousers or dresses.

I don't feel I'm missing out. I don't wear any item of clothing that doesn't flatter me. Bardot tops or round neck t-shirts don't work on me either.

Just stick with stuff that suits your body shape that makes you feel good. Be happy that your legs can carry you wherever you want to go.

I don't wear shorts as I have chunky short legs. I go for knee length skirts, linen trousers or cotton trousers in the summer

madamedeluxe · 15/05/2019 07:33

Some people just naturally have lovely legs but most of us probably don’t.

I am slimmish and slightly pear shaped but do not have great legs. I do look better in short shorts but would still only wear them in the garden.

I have noticed longer length denim shorts in the shops in different colours, cycling shorts style which look lovely but would not suit me.

Try on different styles.

Floisme · 15/05/2019 07:48

I don't miss them. I've never understood why people like to leave their legs and shoulders out to cook in the sun.

banivani · 15/05/2019 07:54

It seems to be a UK thing to be so obsessed with shorts as a summer must. I am Swedish and live in a land where everyone has long slim tanned legs (except me) and this often wear shorts but it’s not something I’ve ever noticed anyone thinking they have to wear. There are so many other things to wear when it’s warm.

madcatladyforever · 15/05/2019 07:57

Yes I'm typical pear shape and there are things that I will just never wear. It's taken me 57 years to realise that dressing for my shape is so much more flattering than following the herd.
I see young girls looking dreadful in shorts around town when they could be wearing something they look great in.

Justheretosee · 15/05/2019 07:59

I didn’t realise people had such insecurities about shorts. I’m 5”1,typical pear shape,10 on top,12 on bottom although waist is a 10 🙄 I am Irish with skin that never tans ! I literally use fake tan everyday during the summer and get the pins out (when we get the weather) like today I would imagine! All my friends do the same. Get the tan on and the legs out!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 15/05/2019 08:07

My legs are the same, but I've recently taken the 'fuck it' approach and started wearing shorts. Midi skirts/dresses make me look frumpy and my calves look even bigger, and loose fitting clothing makes me look 3 sizes bigger. Completely fed up of trying to find fitted but lightweight clothes. I'm finding shorts wearing quite liberating!

TapasForTwo · 15/05/2019 08:08

Jeans aren't the only alternative option to shorts. I am pear shaped and wear tailored linen trousers, cropped cotton trousers or maxi dresses. I find jeans are the most uncomfortable article of clothing to wear in warm weather.

Sagradafamiliar · 15/05/2019 08:11

I don't think I've ever seen anyone wearing shorts apart from on holiday.
It's not unbearably hot anyway. People are wearing coats/jackets/jeans/trainers on the school run today. It's a nice sunny day but not baking.

gubbsywubbsy · 15/05/2019 08:12

@Sagradafamiliar were you in the UK last summer ? It was unbearable at times ..

gubbsywubbsy · 15/05/2019 08:13

And I have a friend who is 40 and looks amazing in shorts .. she wears them a lot in the summer and wears them well.. it is possible to be an adult and look fab .

Missillusioned · 15/05/2019 08:18

I have terrible varicose and thread veins in my legs. They are visible even through tights and from a distance look like bad bruising. People have commented on them thinking I've injured myself.

So not only can I not wear shorts I also can't wear skirts or dresses shorter than ankle length. I do wear them on holiday and don't care.

My thighs are ok actually, it's just from the knee down. I could wear short shorts with knee length boots I suppose 🤔. Not very cool though

NiteFlights · 15/05/2019 09:25

If you want to wear shorts, I’d say go ahead and wear them - but I wouldn’t worry if you don’t want to. I would never wear them in a million years - there are lots of comfortable, cool and stylish alternatives.

A lot of people seem to think that the more skin they expose, the cooler they’ll feel, but it’s just not true in my experience. Loose, natural fabrics are much better and save loads of faffing and sun cream

evilharpy · 15/05/2019 09:29

I too look shit in shorts. I'm a 10ish but pear shaped and carry all my weight on my bottom half. My calves are huge compared to the rest of me, I think aboout 43cm (but are at least rock solid and not jiggly) and in shorts they just look massive. I do wear shorts when it's roasting but feel very self conscious in them.

Auldspinster · 15/05/2019 09:55

I'm 5ft 8 and a size 20, wearing knee length denim shorts today - I do have quite slim legs in proportion to the rest of me.

Crazyladee · 15/05/2019 11:01

Somebody said that at size 12 I'm hardly big. True, but my knees and legs are not in proportion to the rest of my body. My lower body is size 12 but my legs and knees look several dress sizes bigger. If that makes sense.
Anyway I've found a can of Sally Hanson leg tan in the bathroom and gone for it. I'm tanned up and sat in the garden wearing a short skirt having a cuppa. My DH is due home soon and will get a shock as he's not seen my legs out for years (except on holiday which doesn't count!)

I have huge knees, calves and ankles so never wear shorts or skirts or dresses. Sometimes it feels like everyone else in the world has lovely legs.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 15/05/2019 11:18

Why bother putting yourself through the stress?

Just wear what you feel suits you...shorts are pretty crap anyway.

Justmuddlingalong · 15/05/2019 11:27

I look like wee Jimmy Krankey in shorts. Right down to the freckles on my knees. But I wear shorts anyway. 🤷

FiremanKing · 15/05/2019 11:45

My legs are fine but spoilt by wide feet on the end of them!

I moisturise daily and wear fake tan but what I find is really great for my legs is to give them a mega exfoliation with a sandpaper mit once or twice a week.

It makes the skin so smooth like a baby’s and moisturiser and fake tan just glide on.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pretty-Smooth-3-Pack-Smoothing-Mitts-/171852439418?txnId=2010032990007

I don’t have cellulite or stretch marks though so I don’t think it will change that but it will make your skin baby soft.

Gradual tan or add fake tan to your usual moisturiser.

Most will disagree but white legs in shorts are not flattering on anyone.
