Just received it as a present, and am slightly freaked out at the price and not sure how I feel about it.

What do you think of this bag?

It's a bit Queeny for my taste but it's not me who has to carry it. If you like it sod the cost if it was a gift. I assume whoever bought it you did it for good intentions.

CylindraceousNicholas · 05/05/2019 10:52

I don't like the gold, I'm much more of a silver person as I think gold stuff often looks cheap (to me). It doesn't "look" expensive, unless you look at the brand name. I'm not a fan, I would want something more "wow" for that type of price.

wigglypiggly · 05/05/2019 10:54

Sorry but I dont think it's very exciting and the big lettering spoils it really.

Spoiltbeeatch · 05/05/2019 10:54

Dh did buy it with good intentions but it’s worth more than other item I own (other than car and house) and that makes me feel a bit ill. If I were to invest that amount of money in a bag, I would have done a serious amount of research first and probably gone for something a little less “queeny” as you put it. But he’ll be very hurt if I say I’m not mad about it. I’m not sure I can accept a present of that cost.

Perhaps he would be happy if I did swap it for another bag, because after all he will have bought me a present that I never in a million years have bought myself? I’m quite frugal, whereas he is more of “if I have it, I’ll spend it”, and in fairness he never really had it til recently.

nzeire · 05/05/2019 11:21

Swap it, gently say how much you love and appreciate the gesture, but it’s not quite perfect for a lifelong bag for you.
Get what you want, and take it back sooner rather than later for credit

nzeire · 05/05/2019 11:23

And personally? Don’t like the bag. Would be really upset if I had to pretend to like it for ten years

OrdinarySnowflake · 05/05/2019 11:24

I like it. But it is very formal. Do you work somewhere where you need a more formal bag/have the sort of need for a smart day bag?

Perhaps approach it more with him that while it's a lovely bag, you do'nt think 'cost per use' would make it worth it as you don't regularly need a formal /work-wear bag (perhaps frame it as "this is the sort of bag you carry when wearing a suit, I don't wear suits that often", men get that comparassion), and suggest you swap it for a bag that's more informal/could be worn with jeans /casual day dresses - like a Chloe Marcie (other bag experts on here could give you a list of ideas for 'smart casual' bags rathan than 'smart formal' like this is).

If you could get something that you can use for everyday for years, the 'cost per use' thing might make it less scary...

Spoiltbeeatch · 05/05/2019 11:42

I actually would have little use for a smart casual bag. I have 3 small and messy children, and can’t really see myself going out and about at thre weekend with a bag worth over £1000. I do get out a bit but not sure how often to justify an expensive bag Blush I have quite a corporate job so get to wear nice stuff in work more than at home. Still, that’s not an everyday work-bag, it would get destroyed. In a way, it ticks a lot of boxes, if anyone could recommend a bag that ticks some of the following criteria I could see if the shop has it:
My key colours are black, red, white and to a much lesser extent dark blue: a red bag would probably make my heart sing, but a black bag or a white/natural bag might also work;
Would ideally be big enough to suit work if I have a fancy big meeting, but also nice enough to take out to a restaurant;
Maybe less classic than the one he got, but not so quirky it will look dated in a few years (for that money it needs to last years!)
Maybe I should just learn to live the bag I have, as you can see it’s not a million miles from what would suit?
Any suggestions with links and pics very welcome!
I guess the budget is up to £1250ish ( the attached bag was apparently slightly reduced).

Could you return it and have a holiday OP. Sorry ......maybe not helpful . Price tag is epic. Thoughtful and generous of your husband just slightly off track I guess.

NoTheresa · 05/05/2019 11:46

It’s beautiful.

Spoiltbeeatch · 05/05/2019 11:49

Usually definitely prefer holidays but it is for a big birthday so the idea of having something that lasts is nice. I suspect shop will only do credit note rather than refund in any event!

What other brands does the shop sell

ElloBrian · 05/05/2019 11:56

Hermes Birkin? Mulberry Bayswater?

justaweeone · 05/05/2019 11:57

Mulberry Hampstead in black

Spoiltbeeatch · 05/05/2019 12:22

Birkin way out of price range. Red Bayswater looks gorgeous but doubt I’ll be lucky enough that that’s in stock. Will have a look! Two stylish friends have come over and they’re cooing over the bag. Apparently he was very excited about giving me the present, he thought he had done so well...

I actually like it but understand if it’s not practical or your taste.

Maybe try LV?

VictoriaBun · 05/05/2019 12:54

It's a classic. It will never go out of fashion . It will (with care ) last for years and years. But at the end of the day , if you don't like it, it's not worth owning.

Doje · 05/05/2019 12:55

I like it! I'd use it as my work bag, it surely wouldn't get that battered?

StarShapedWindow · 05/05/2019 12:56

I like it as an everyday work bag - I don’t think it would get battered and would look great with smart clothes. Why not spend a bit more than you usually would on an everyday accessory - much better than spending loads on something that only gets used for ‘best’.

franke · 05/05/2019 13:27

What Victoriabun said. It's really beautiful. Sometimes dh surprises me with something I'd never have thought of buying and it takes me a while to catch up with his thought process but then I end up loving whatever it is. The bag you've got comes in red and off white too...

Bangingdoors · 05/05/2019 13:37

I think it's amazing and will last forever and ever. It's very classic, possibly something you will grow into in time.

feelingsinister · 05/05/2019 13:39

Queenie is a good description. For that price I would want it to be a very special bag and it just isn't. I know my partner would rather I tell him and chose something I liked. Maybe you could plan a day together to go and choose another and have lunch etc.

Sagradafamiliar · 05/05/2019 14:14

Where did he buy it? It looks really bashed up (I'm assuming it's second hand so not easy to swap)

NoBaggyPants · 05/05/2019 14:56

I wouldn't call it a classic, it's just a bit bleurgh.

Etsy has some beautiful leather bags (and some no so beautiful!), you could effectively have a bag made just for you and for far less. Or you could have a holiday to Morocco and have a bag made for you there!
