Just received it as a present, and am slightly freaked out at the price and not sure how I feel about it.

Sorry I don't like it. Looks cheap and bashed! No way on earth would I have said over £1k for it. I would be VERY upset, especially not being able to return it 😢

Sparkletastic · 05/05/2019 15:04

The condition doesn't look great - perhaps hence the discount.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/05/2019 15:06

I think you can't return it can you?

So you're going to have to love it

Summersunshine2 · 05/05/2019 15:19

I like it!
Could swap for cheaper bag, purse and sunglasses in same shop?

wigglypiggly · 05/05/2019 15:20

do you know where he bought it from and what their returns policy is if you don't want to keep it, if you do keep it are you going to put it on the house insurance

Spoiltbeeatch · 05/05/2019 15:34

It’s definitely not second-hand - if it looks bashed up, it must be the light in the photo. I do know where it’s from, a high-end department store. There is a gift receipt for it, so I could swap it if I like. I do prefer to keep things people choose for me, as it’s more sentimental, and in fairness it would go with everything, especially as when you remove the clutch, the lettering is much less ostentatious, it’s basically 2 bags in one. I’m not sure any other black bag could excite more, it would have to be red or some lovely color combination. He mentioned in passing it came in burgundy, but sure that’s a dull colour and would go with a lot less. I think I could learn to love it. I might go into the shop and see if there’s anything that I absolutely adore which would be as practical, but if not, I will keep it and be very happy!

I have looked at the store’s website but for some reason they don’t have all their bags up there, I know they have a lot more in store.

In that case, I'd have no problems asking to see about an exchange. I'm sure your DH would rather you have something to cherish or use instead of something you aren't keen on.
For some reason the bag looks dusty and marked in the photos.

Iooselipssinkships · 05/05/2019 15:40

I have a fancy Vivienne Westwood bag and to make it look less formal I've changed the strap and attached a leopard print hair scarf to it!

clutterqu33n · 05/05/2019 15:56

it doesn't really matter whether we like it, does it?

but since you asked - it's indeed very Queeny, the gold letter are show offish and virtually scream, look, I have a super expensive bag. I always think this gives even very high end products a tacky look. shudder.

and spending in excess of 1k on a bag is simply obscene in my opinion but each to their own.

BloomedAgain · 05/05/2019 16:00

I like it and like that you could use it as a tote and clutch. What model is it? Is the tote big enough to use as a document bag for meetings? But really it only matters what you think of it.

CherryPlum · 05/05/2019 16:11

Ah it's a tough predicament because you don't want to hurt his feelings. But there's something old-fashioned looking about it, also it doesn't look very roomy. I do think you could learn to love it though, as it's not a horrible bag it's just a bit....boring. If you swap it for something else you'll always remember that he didn't choose it. If it were me, on balance, I think I'd keep it and enjoy the feeling that he chose something special.

Verite1 · 05/05/2019 16:16

I love this. And the bags are amazingly well made.

Why don't you go together to exchange it? That way he can have the pleasure of you choosing the one you want and him giving it to you? (Maybe do a little surreptitious research first so you know what you're looking for).

SarahMontague · 05/05/2019 16:55

My first thought on looking at the bag was “it’s a work bag .. I hope she has a job that can take it” and then you go on to say you doSmile
If you don’t dislike it I would keep it. It’s really hurtful to spend time agonising over a present, thinking about the person and second-guessing whether they will like it and so on, only to have them return it. It’s lovely that he wants to spend that much on you.

I’m a Issy Mayake BaoBao fan - ticks loads of boxes: non leather, clever design, not heavy before you put all your kids’ paraphernalia in it, comes in backpack, lots of colours or neutral.

NoTheresa · 05/05/2019 17:01

This sort of bag could never look “tacky”. It has a classic look and shape unlike those that are a mess of chains and pockets and so on.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 05/05/2019 17:07

It’s a work bag for sure. Even with the site she’s clutch. Maybe use the bag without the clutch for work and keep the clutch for going out?

I’d swap for something more practical for daily use. Ysl do have some lovely bags but the trend does seem to be for that big gold logo on the front which I think will be what dates it.

A good classic mulberry. And £1000 would go a long way to a mulberry. Everyday use I use that mulberry Anthony. I believe that marketed as a mans bag but it’s a good sized neutral crossbody bag.

Or another brand tote bag. As they can be used for work, days out and casual use. I would say the Louis Vuitton neverfull but I think a lot of people assume they are fakes these days.

stopwining · 05/05/2019 17:07

I have this bag in cream and gold and I adore it.
I love that without the insert it looks more casual.
I usually hate gold too but with the cream it goes really well.
You've got to love it though, my dream for my 30th was a YSL bag but I wanted to be the one to buy it, my husband has great taste but when buying something so expensive it's got to be 100%.

I wear mine to work everyday, get some good leather protector (mulberry do a good one) and if you do decide to keep it make sure you use it!

There's a tendency to save expensive items for best but my opinion is, they're more of a waste sat in the wardrobe doing nothing!

Whatever you decide, makes sure you love it, YSL do some amazing bags, classic styles that last forever and a bit more casual if you prefer, I'll try and find a picture of my other one because it is less structured and you can use as a normal handbag or change the straps around to more of a 'satchel style'

Let us know what you do!!!

stopwining · 05/05/2019 17:10

This is the one - photo doesn't quite do it justice though!

What do you think of this bag?
Hoppinggreen · 05/05/2019 17:10

I would love it in Burgundy, maybe see if you can swap it for that?

Abra1de · 05/05/2019 17:14

I really like it without the clutch and think it would be a good work bag.

BuildBuildings · 05/05/2019 17:14

Tbh it is a bit tacky for me. For the money I'd want something I loved. If its not that can you swap it? Just be honest with your dh. It was a nice thought!

user1493242132 · 05/05/2019 18:53

OP I am assuming it’s from Selfridges as their website is sh!t, if you can go in store and check out the other YSL handbags. Some are very very beautiful and I bet you would find one you’d like to keep forever
