Just received it as a present, and am slightly freaked out at the price and not sure how I feel about it.

What do you think of this bag?

On a handbag thread there's always someone who suggests getting a bag made for you for far less.
Well, I did that. It was shit. What a waste of money. There isn't the same quality control level and I am sorry but it shows.
I have Aspinal, Mulberry and Chloe bags and I would buy them all again over commissioning a bag again. And I thought I was being extravagant!
Truth is that with a designer bag you pay for the name but you pay for quality too.

I like the bag, OP. It's a classic and if you remove the clutch it looks really work- appropriate.

Bluntness100 · 05/05/2019 19:47

I'm fairly sure that's not part of their current range. The logo is wrong for bags similar to that. It's quite odd op. But if you have the receipt. If he hadn't got it from a department store I'd have said that was second hand or fake. I'm sorry.

Catchingbentcoppers · 05/05/2019 19:52

There's a tendency to save expensive items for best but my opinion is, they're more of a waste sat in the wardrobe doing nothing!

Absolutely agree. DH bought me a Mulberry bag for my 50th and I didn't use it for 6 months, then realised how ridiculous that is. It's a beautiful bag and now I use it all the time.

Isthebigwomanhere · 05/05/2019 20:09

Is it the uptown medium tote with detachable clutch and shoulder strap?

If so with the shoulder strap it actually makes a really good day bag

TantricTwist · 05/05/2019 20:13

I really like it so I'd definitely keep it because I like simple and classic styles.

Alarae · 05/05/2019 20:21

I love it. With proper care it would be a fabulous work bag and would class up any outfit.

Jealous.

Politicalacuityisathing · 05/05/2019 20:46

PMSL at all the posters trying to piss on your chips OP! Reading through what boxes you want to tick, it seems to match them all! BUT as others have said, just use it! If you think it just isn't your thing the exchange it by all means. (I'm sure your OH wouldn't have wanted to gift you all this angst too?!) But if you're 'just' freakig at the expense (which I understand) but actually like it, then just accept it. I know nothing about designer bags by t looks a rock solid classic to me (rather than Queenie or vulgar or fake!)

BloomedAgain · 05/05/2019 20:52

Looking at it here the bag seems super useful. www.ysl.com/gb/shop-product/women/handbags-uptown-medium-uptown-tote-in-shiny-smooth-leather_cod45438364kw.html

Xmasbaby11 · 05/05/2019 20:53

I think it's beautiful and classic. I'd use it every day. Your dh is v generous!

If you don't like it, definitely exchange but for that price, make sure you get something you use every day.

GlossyTaco · 05/05/2019 20:55

Exchange it for something that you love op , its far too expensive to be sat in it's dust bag.

Spoiltbeeatch · 05/05/2019 21:00

Bluntness, don’t be sorry Grin. For it be fake, my dh would have to (a) found a fake bag within the space of a few hours, then persuaded the shop in question to give him a perfectly sized bag, box and YSL cover and (b) had a personality transplant. Guess it might resolve all those spender v saver arguments we’ve had over the last 15 years...bigwoman, it is an uptown medium tote, just checked - looks nice online actually! Dh showed me a pic of it on display, and there is a red version above it. It doesn’t look burgundy, although it isn’t bright red. We’re going to look at it tmw to just make sure, by there’s no doubt black will go with more outfits, because of course the red will be a different red from all my clothes. Looks slightly tacky in red, with the gold, but I’ve learnt from this thread that what might look tacky in a photo doesn’t necessarily look so in real life. Definitely the bag is growing on me!

What a lovely husband!
Unfortunately I really don't like the bag. Its a bit old lady and already looks dated.

NoTheresa · 05/05/2019 21:18

Old lady? 🙄

changingeverything2019 · 05/05/2019 21:30

Setting aside the fact that is a designer bag: I asked for a bag for my birthday, when I had three small children. I wanted "squashy with room to carry a couple of nappies, bib and wipes."
DH bought me a similar bag to yours. It was far too much like a work/office bag, (corners and stiff).
I used it once, bashed into shop shelves, doors etc. Total nuisance. I said thank you and put it in the wardrobe, then eventually gave it to my DSis.
When DH found out he was really upset that I hadn't just said it wasn't what I wanted and could I swap it.
Be honest and enjoy your special present.

BlueMerchant · 05/05/2019 21:35

Yes NoTheresa old lady.

OrdinarySnowflake · 06/05/2019 08:52

I can see the "old lady" comments, but that style does seem to be back in fashion with formal workwear after a few years of woman carrying squishy, unstructured bags while wearing suits, that often looked a bit out of place if I'm honest.

As you do dress formally for work, this would go well with a work wardrobe, but if its not the colour you want, tell him and ask if he wouldn't mind changing it.

TheGoddessFrigg · 06/05/2019 08:57

God it's horrible. Sorry but it looks like the sort of bag Mrs Thatcher used to carry 😶

Fairylea · 06/05/2019 08:59

Personally I think it’s really horrible but then I really hate anything with obvious branding / logos.

nettie434 · 06/05/2019 09:23

I like it and think it is a really classic. I think your husband has done really well with this present - especially making sure he got a gift receipt. I don’t think it is Queeny and actually the Lautner bags used by the Queen are now considered very stylish and desirable.

Red bags are lovely but they don’t always last the way that black or brown bags do - the colour often gets worn off at the corners with time. The black might last slightly longer - especially if you use it for work.

I think it is a good idea to check other colours and styles - even if it is just to confirm in your own mind that you want to keep this one. I also agree with other posters about bags ‘growing’ on one. I have a bag that I thought was wonderful in the shop and don’t like now.

LoafofSellotape · 06/05/2019 09:28

Exchange it, something so expensive should be loved and used and only the queen would use that bag😉

NiteFlights · 06/05/2019 09:41

It is classic - formal rather than old ladyish in my opinion. I think in this style you are more likely to get good use out of black than red. What colour winter coat do you usually go for? Personally I don’t like the obvious lettering but as that is on the clutch, you could use that for night out when the logo would be more ‘appropriate’ than in the day, and the main bag could be either for work or daytime formal occasions.

I think it would be good to have a think about the bag just as a bag, not as a present or as something expensive, just ask yourself whether you like the shape, style, size, weight, fastenings, etc, and that will help you decide what to do. The trouble with getting opinions is that we all like different things and bags (like sandals!) are very personal! FWIW the bag isn’t my style at all, nor do I have any expensive bags, but I do think it’s the kind of bag that could last a lifetime and be very useful - a real ‘wardrobe no-brainer’ reliable item - something you’re not passionate about at first but grow to love over time, if that makes sense.
