Hate midi dress length, when will it go away?!

Midi length does nothing for me, it makes me look frumpy. The problem now is finding a dress or skirt which isn't 'midi'.

I guess midi must suit some people? I never seem to see anyone in midi length in real life though. I waaaay prefer juat above the knee. Or full length. Anything but midi!

I'm tall and slim and they do nothing for me either, except making me look like some kind of Stepford housewife from a meme Confused. I even had a personal shopper try to style one on me and give up after much frustrated grumbling! Grin

I do like my legs though, and loose, drapey above the knee sheath dresses look best on me, those or maxi dresses which are tight over the torso and then flare from the hips.

Sigh81 · 30/04/2019 12:23

Oh, I avoid floaty midis! Or anything floaty tbh (not my style). But a silk blouse tucked into a midi pencil skirt is one of my favourite outfits. Usually worn with heels - I have long legs, slim calves (and rather large thighs 😊) and think it can work really well as a length. Am 5ft7 which may also help.

BarbedBloom · 30/04/2019 13:49

Hate them. I prefer just below knee or just above. Am 6ft 2 though and all leg so most midi dresses seem to end up that length anyway

MaryLennoxsScowl · 30/04/2019 14:32

I love them! They hide my thighs and knees and show my calves and ankles, which are by far the best bits of my legs. I’m 5’2” and usually have to hem them as the shops make them at least 4” too long for me. I think knee-length looks frumpy at the moment, though mini is back in again.

GreenOliveOrBlackOlive · 30/04/2019 14:43

Love midi. I hate above the knee, just draws attention to my knees and thighs.

But I’ve always worn lengths that suit me regardless of fashion.

GraceMarks · 30/04/2019 14:49

I really want to like midis but I just can't wear them - they end at the fattest part of my calves and look bloody awful with the flat shoes I have to wear. I'm waiting for knee length to come back in but I've been waiting a lot of years for that and suspect I have years still to go!

florence11 · 30/04/2019 14:56

It's my favourite, always has been. I'm tall and slim and midi makes me feel amazingggggg

florence11 · 30/04/2019 14:57

I think really I just like swishy skirts. Not keen on tight midi.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/04/2019 16:20

I love them. I'm 5ft 6, size 10 - I wear short skirts in winter with opaques, but feel far too exposed in bare legs and something above the knee. Maxi length is so hard to get right, it seems to be either wedding or beach. Until the midi length came back in, I was always in trousers in warmer weather. A midi dress or skirt with trainers and a denim jacket is my go-to summer outfit.

dontcallmelen · 30/04/2019 16:34

I like them on other people, but I just feel silly in them I’m 4ft 10” & small framed they make me look shapeless.

SrSteveOskowski · 30/04/2019 17:30

I hate midis. I'm 5'3" and a midi length does nothing for me. Either go long or go short and forget about this frumpy inbetween length.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 30/04/2019 17:32

I don't like it because it ends a my legs widest point. My calves are big.
Not good.

Oblomov19 · 30/04/2019 17:38

Love it. Too short for maxi. Too overweight, or not ok for work - for mini.
So midi is perfect.

mimibunz · 30/04/2019 17:40

I love it. I’ve got chicken legs with no calf muscles and like to hide them.

trendingorange · 30/04/2019 18:17

Love midi's here!
I'm 5ft 6" and knee length shirts are far too short when I sit down and I get cold (plus I'm over 40 so my legs have been round the block, so not perfect skin).
Hopefully they will stay around for a few years, there's and million shorter dresses around.

GraceMarks · 30/04/2019 18:35

Interesting that the responses seem to be divided between "I'm tall and/or slim and I love midis" and "I'm short and/or not-slim and they look frumpy on me". Not such a surprise when it comes to fashion, I suppose, but it does make me wish for the nth time that I'd been blessed with better genes and willpower so I could enjoy fashion a bit more Sad

User10fuckingmillion · 30/04/2019 18:47

Meh Grace I reckon if short people (such as myself) are told enough that they don’t look good in clothes they start to believe it, but it’s not really true.

GraceMarks · 30/04/2019 18:58

I don't think short people can't look good, iyswim, but a lot of the main trends tend to favour taller people, and if you're not blessed in that department you have to make more conscious effort to make things work. I think midi skirts are fine for people with slim calves but if you're short you need to look at petite ranges, otherwise it ends up being more ankle length.

Jackfruit · 30/04/2019 19:57

Most clothes are made for tall people. Petite ranges are often really limited. I spend my life holding up skirts and dresses only to put them back as they’re too long.

AnnaNimmity · 30/04/2019 20:02

I really like the midi length too - I'm tall though. I do think that it can look frumpy unless you wear high heels (unless you're embracing the trainer/midi look). I can't wear knee length though - I have to go short or midi. Nothing in between for me.

I bought 2 midi dresses and a midi skirt today in fact...

Nenuco · 30/04/2019 20:46

I actually0 think midi works for short women. At least, the short plus size bloggers I follow.

Nenuco · 30/04/2019 20:47

Doesn’t work for heavier, apple/rectangular/top-heavy tall women.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 30/04/2019 21:11

This. In many shops, the full length dresses are more than a foot taller than me 🤣 I'm not even particularly short at 5ft 4, but I'm long of body and short of leg.

Petite ranges alse have a habit of thinking short = child. I was looking at some dresses and trousers in Next earlier. The petite range only carried the hideously patterned versions. Apparently short people have no use for plain navy or black skirts and dresses. We want pink floral and spotty navy 🙄🙄

SoupDragon · 01/05/2019 07:54

I disagree. It's only recently that tall ranges have been readily available - I used to really struggle to get clothes and I'm only 5'8". There's no option to adjust clothing that's too short either.

Most clothes might be designed for tall people but they are made for the average of height.

schnubbins · 01/05/2019 12:27

Would agree with @SoupDragon .I'm 5ft 10 with a long torso .Trying to find anything long enough is getting more and more difficult especially tops, blouses and dresses where the waistline more often than not sits under my boobs.Clothes nowadays are made for more for people with average height.I don't wear anything short as it just does not suit me and many short dresses are like tunics on me.
