laska yes Eurostar it was lovely as was Bruges, we did boat trip on the canals, museums etc I wasn’t expecting it to be as nice as it was.
Yy trains my Dh has always wanted to go on the orient express or the Rockies but the cost is😱😱

dontcallmelen · 18/04/2019 10:57

Bologna is lovely, Also Verona is very interesting & very pretty.

grannycake · 18/04/2019 11:09

does he follow any sport - my DH is into cycling and I took him to Belgium to see a couple of the classic races at Easter last year - some of he towns were lovely and to my surprise I loved Belgium (and not just Bruges)

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 11:29

No, no sport (I'm pleased to say, as I hate it ). - although he will always cheer when Watford win as that's where he is from! .. He's more of a bookish culture type.. loves food and wine though ( which is why I at first thought of Alsace..

but Vienna/ Verona , could be good.. Bologna and Porto , I know he has spoken about wanting to go to.. ( but I wanted to do something he wasn't expecting and a bit different ..) ..

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 11:31

I saw a Bauhaus trip in the Guardian the other week, he'd like that , but it doesnt look like the sort of thing you could do in a few days..

justilou1 · 18/04/2019 11:39

Hi @Laska... Strasbourg is gorgeous! I’d go back in a heartbeat! It’s so pretty!!! Very “Untouristy” and untouched, and easy to schlepp around. I highly recommend it for a weekend. I think it’s very romantic. If you’re lucky it will snow!

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 11:43

It does look good, and look like 5hrs on train from London with change on Paris I think .. Do you remember where you stayed Justilou ?

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 12:02

this place looks fab! vvv expensive (Im not sure I can afford it really, ) but he took me to a really fantastic place in Florence for my 60th, I'd like to take him to something as nice

dontcallmelen · 18/04/2019 12:06

Ooh Laska that looks fab, I reckon if he is a foodie & knowledgable with wine then somewhere that could incorporate that & beautiful architecture which is probably most of Europe, so I’m not helping much am I 😂

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 12:19

Yes I do think it would be a winner, (I will look at other hotels though! That is really expensive, but so fab.. Looks like you cannot book Eurostar before 180 days before departure ,.. but then , its almost a year away... .. Another thing to save for Smile

Ellapaella · 18/04/2019 12:29

@Laska2Meryls what about Bruges? A beautiful city, lovely in the winter, full of history and you can get there by train.

dontcallmelen · 18/04/2019 12:31

Yes I think so too, at least you have a bit of time for savings to increase it does look spectacular.

Ellapaella · 18/04/2019 12:33

Oh and Amsterdam - one of my favourite cities. Beautiful place and has everything. Art, history, excellent shopping, cafes, wonderful food. And small enough to walk round - I absolutely love Amsterdam.

justilou1 · 18/04/2019 12:36

No I don’t... (much drinking was done, as was kid-free and catching up with friends from Austria!) Sorry! Had a ball and fell in love with the place. Look up the fairytale of Melusine as well. It’s set in Strasbourg.

justilou1 · 18/04/2019 12:37

Amsterdam is lovely - Haarlem is prettier.

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 12:45

He's lived in Amsterdam ,Ella ( it is a great place though, but neither of us have been back for some years now) and I'm pretty sure he's been to Bruges ..

But Alsatian food and wine, is right up his street , (he loves hunting out Alsace wine - even more if he can get a bargain in Lidl ).. I am now definitely thinking Strasbourg is the place!!

Ellapaella · 18/04/2019 12:50

I'm sure it'll be perfect - Strasbourg looks lovely, and all European cities are beautiful in winters

dontcallmelen · 18/04/2019 12:56

As a little diversion, in between eating n drinking you could stalk Donald Tusk & storm the E.U. parliament, Letting them know we appreciate fine wine & food in Europe win win.

grannycake · 18/04/2019 12:57

How about Lyon? Food capital of France, beautiful city and very French

justilou1 · 18/04/2019 14:00

I remember Strasbourg had amazing markets, too!

twosoups1972 · 18/04/2019 16:39

laska your dh is from Watford?? I live very near there, how funny!

A surprise birthday trip sounds lovely. I would second Bruges, we went last year as a family. Although we didn't realise you can't go direct on Eurostar, you have to change at Brussels. Was ok though.

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 17:40

He is, Twosoups and works there during the week atm..

Lyon also looks nice.. there are so many choices!.. (but at least I have nearly a year to sort it !) .. but so far def erring towards Strasbourg.. ..

Keira culottes came and went back, they are nice, but not £45 nice for what I want them for I think and possibly best for work. .. I have plenty of work stuff, esp if I'm leaving end of this year ( which is the plan) ..

I have seen some khaki wide legs in M&S , which are a much more casual style , (though I may need to shorten them for what I really want) and much cheaper !! They are not in our local store, but I am planning on a trip over to Southampton next week as I am on leave, so will have a look at them there ..

Laska2Meryls · 18/04/2019 17:48

...meant to add, I just got back from another bike ride , its so warm here - about 20 deg I think, I should have worn shorts. Down the cycle track for about 4 miles , a longish hill on the road coming back towards us, , then a bit of off-road to get back to cycle track, back up the track and finally another hill !! (still small ones, but hills anyway !) Smile.. #Laskajellylegs

Am Hungry now .... luckily DH is on an earlier train he tells me , ..

SoyYo · 18/04/2019 17:57

Hello my Hush amigas! I’m sitting in the Eurostar wearing the Kiera culottes (my “lucky” trousers I’ve decided) sitting a highly deserved glass of champagne, saw Notre Dame from the taxi and was in a way relieved to see in RL she’s still standing proud despite the damage.
I’m celebrating because the presentation to the “top guy” and culmination of 6 months work on a global strategy was well received and appreciated!
Now to catch up with the thread Smile
